Subject: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 17 Sep 06 - 06:05 PM Hi all , Here is some of the latest news about Bedworth Folk Festival 2006 (November 24th - 26th 2006 - based in and around The Civic Hall in Bedworth) We are currently working on our September newsletter, which we hope to have available in a week or two, get yourself on the email list to get it sent to you! meanwhile we are just giving you a reasonably timed reminder that the reduced ticket prices for this years festival finishes at the end of September. Bedworth remains the very best value week-end of folk music, dance and song you could ever wish for, even at the full ticket price of £35 (That is far less than half the price of many festivals) with over 50 guest acts and in excess of 100 morris and ritual dancers performing in the towm centre â€" if you want to Download a PDF copy of our finished "posh" leaflet that includes guest details and a booking form you can do so from our web site It is a good idea to regularly Visit Our Web Site to check for the the latest news and additions. As always tickets are going fast, but following last years big expansion of the festival we are now able to accommodate far more visitors than ever before so now is the time to get your booking in, before you are too late (and before the price rise) â€" especially if you are looking for caravan/campervan space as this is sure to sell out. You can book securely on line from the web site using a credit or debit card with no added charge, or download a booking form from the web site and drop it in the post to us. Needless to say the Civic Hall will remain as a centre piece of Festival activities, being the venue for the Craft Fair, The Saturday Big Ceilidh with the wonderful Aardvark Ceilidh Band with Pete Grassby calling, plus a series of daytime workshops, meet the artiste and some special "themed" sessions, in addition to providing excellent bar and catering facilities. Our administration will remain in the adjoining Arts Centre building (which now has full disabled access), and the venue will open the festival with a Friday song session where all singers and musicians will be welcome (and with a real ale bar!). The Arts Centre Theatre will feature acoustic concerts all day Saturday, climaxing in the ever-popular "VOICES" concert. The Liberal and Conservative Clubs, will both continue to be main concert venues, the Conservative Club concert hall running a full programme of concerts from 8pm Friday evening right through to the Sunday evening final session, with a series of Saturday concerts also taking place in the Liberal Club (Now with a lift to the first floor) where we will again be featuring an afternoon "bands" concert, along with the big Saturday evening concert which we see the debut of the new Isambarde/Vicky Swan & Jonny Dyer (and more!) collaboration big band entitled "The Bedworth Experiment" - this band will be featuring a whole selection of new material not previously performed by any of the band members and I know that band are taking this "Premier" very seriously with lots of practice and special arrangements, and a whole host of instrumentation being used! There will also be the fantastic sound of "Something Nasty in the Woodshed" (those who heard them at Moor & Coast Festival will tell you just how good this exciting new band is!) plus one of the areas new "hot" bands "The Dustbowl String Band" and of course, much more…. We will be holding a full programme of events at the Rugby Club both Friday and Saturday evening this year, whilst The White Swan will continue to play a major part in the festivals’ activities, hosting sessions throughout the week-end, and as always offering excellent hospitality, excellent ales and excellent food! Thanks for your support for the Festival, keep up with all the latest news on our web site, ( http://www.bedworth-festival.info ) and remember we always welcome your views and comments about the festival (preferably by Email ). Best wishes, and thanks for your time Malc Gurnham Festival Director) |

Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: nutty Date: 18 Sep 06 - 05:34 PM Malc .... I would love to come but have a camper van. Looking at the map, the Rugby Club appears to be a good distance from the main venues and not a walk that I would relish doing on my own in the dark. Is there any form of transport being provided between the Rugby Club and civic or would a taxi be advisable? |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Chris Green Date: 18 Sep 06 - 05:44 PM Hi Malc - God that was quick! I only rang you with the big band name last night! Looking forward to the mighty Bedduth. nutty, I seem to rememember from last year that the Rugby Club is only about a ten minute walk from the Civic. Maybe the map's a bit deceptive! Certainly last year as it was the only late night venue there was a steady stream of festival goers walking down there from about eleven onwards. Safety in numbers and all that. Hope you get it sorted! Chris |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Lenny’s mum Date: 18 Sep 06 - 05:49 PM We've been to nearly every Bedworth festival except the first, all of which have been excellent. We're looking forward to it! Janet |

Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Herga Kitty Date: 19 Sep 06 - 02:32 AM Nutty - I'm sure you won't have to walk by yourself, and we'll be camping at the Rugby Club. Hope you can make it! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: MBSLynne Date: 19 Sep 06 - 02:46 AM I'd like to make at least part of it (preferrably to include the Bedworth experiment!). We can't come for the whole weekend...can we get tickets for individual events? It's the weekend after my birthday so would be nice to celebrate (?) with friends Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 19 Sep 06 - 03:39 AM We're looking forward to it - and the Experiment sounds most exciting, well done J*+V (and I)! Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 10 Oct 06 - 06:11 AM Hi All, Just poped in to say we have an excellent new pub venue for this year - The Black Bank(on the Coventry Road). New landlord and landlady Geoff & Pat are no strangers to the folkscene having previously run the Royal Oak in Earlsdon, where they hosted many nights of frivolity with the likes of Earlsdon Morrismen. This year they will be hosting a number of sessions over the week-end, including the mudcat meet (Saturday afternoon - time still not quite decided!), and will be running a late bar which should prove particularly attractive to those staying in the indoor camping as it's just around the corner. We are hoping that the new venue will prove to be a general meeting place, and are having an early informal music and song session in the venue for the early arrivals on friday (5pm - 7pm) and just to set you up right for the week-end it's happy hour 4pm - 6pm! Geoff is very keeen on keeping an excellent cellar and sells a mean pint of Abbots and will be doing a wide selection of excellent food, including all-day breakfasts throughout the week-end. The pub is situated just out of the town, on the way to the Rugby Club camping area, just a few minutes from the indoor camping venues, and only a couple of hundred yards from the Conservative Club home of the main song concert stage. On the ticket front, caravan/campervan site is almost full, but still room in the indoor camping - remember you can book on line at the website www.bedworth-festival.info - any queries please post here as I drop in regularly or contact me direct on malcg@bedworth-festival.info Thanks for your time. Malc. |

Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: jojofolkagogo Date: 16 Oct 06 - 09:11 AM HELLO KITTY, HELLO ALAN W W HELLO MALC AND HELLO TO NUTTY AND ANYONE I MAY HAVE MISSED !! I won a ticket to this event, and am looking forward to it immensely and its nice to know some friends are gonna be there too, will be nice to see you Alan - missed you at Whitby this year. NUTTY I too (now) have a camper van - and I am female, and I dont like walking around late at night in the dark, I also have a torch, but another person to walk along with would be good !!! I hope that kitty is right when she says we will not have to "Walk Alone" but if you are worried, as I will also be, we can meet up and "go in tandem" Malc did not come back with a reply about bus transport did he ? I hope there is some ... See you all there Jojofolkagogo |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: GUEST Date: 17 Oct 06 - 03:49 PM Hi all, Tents OK - Four Pounds for the week-end at the Rugby Club, but please book in advance as you will need a pass to get onto the club site. Caravans and Campervans very close to full, but Indoor Camping still OK. There is no bus, it really isn't too far to walk, no more than about 10 mins from most venues and just 3 or 4 mins from The Black Bank, and quite frankly we can't afford it! (The infrastructure costs, room hire, licences, PRS, insurance and the like have risen over 1000% for us in the last 2 years - yes 10 times as much as in 2004, and that's before we get the inevitable "extras" that always seem to crop up) What will be particularly nice with the Black Bank is that we can have good pub sessions friday and saturday evenings safely away from the town centre, and close to both the Rugby Club and the Indoor Camping (and there is a late licence!). As usual the turning on of the Christmas lights will happen on the saturday evening, and there will be a fun fair and lots of charity stalls in the town centre plus a firework display. The nice guys from our local radio station will be putting up a stage in the town centre which will be used for the festival and for other activities during the day. All we need is some of that nice weather we had at Banbury last week-end (did anyone bottle any?) Cheers Malc. |

Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 10 Nov 06 - 09:58 AM Hi Folks! Just a few "Clarifications"! The Festival has the key to the Scout Hut from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon and we are the only users, so people DO NOT have to out for a certain time, other than when the key holding steward has to lock up - that will be the very reasonable and obliging Ron Jackson this year who I have asked to provided with a list of opening and closing times that will posted at the Information desk and at the Scout Hut itself - hope that clarifies some (ALL?!) of the concerns! The Mudgather is scheduled for 4pm - 6pm at The Black Bank pub (a couple of hundred yards down the road from the leisure centre traffic lights, and opposite the turning for the passageway leading to the Rugby Club) - it will be an "open" event (no ticket needed) as will the three singarounds to be held at the venue (Friday teatime and Friday and Saturday late night (9 - 12) Sorry I hadn't been able to answer these earlier but I'm trying to put together the difficult jigsaw that everyone else sees as a programme! The full running order should be on the Website sometime over the week-end. If anyone has urgent enquiries please email me at The main Festival Mailbox Ta! Malc |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: mandotim Date: 10 Nov 06 - 11:18 AM Cheers Malc! Really looking forward to it. To the indoor camping kitchen posse; I'm going to bring a supply of the World's Most Dangerous Chilli Pickled Onions, home made, eating with cheese for the use of. They come in three grades; Hot, Major Bowel Surgery and Brain Damage. Bring your strongest cheese for snacks! Try not to imagine the scene in the morning... Tim |

Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 11 Nov 06 - 04:20 AM Oops forgot to mention - afraid no French Market again this year the council have decided to make it a charity day so in addition to the kids fairground stuff there will be charity stalls in the town centre (also I think the French Market costs them too much - both to hire and for the clearing up afterwards!) Malc. |

The Mudgather overlaps with when we're dancing, Hils, but I hope to get there for a bit. Anyone who fancies dancing a bit of border morris (even if you've never danced before ..... or you're an expert) join 'Herbaceous Border' from 3.30 - 4.30pm on the Saturday in the Health Centre Piazza. (That's outside the Civic Hall) Or if you're desperate not to miss the Mudgather you've another chance on the Sunday from 1.00-2.00pm outside the Swan in Leicester Street. As usual, I'm on the look out for more MUSICIANS too. Sue |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: George Papavgeris Date: 19 Nov 06 - 01:10 PM We hope to have a bit of an extra surprise for y'all on Saturday, with Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer at the "meet" in the Arts Theatre (3:00PM - 4:20PM); in fact it should be a surprise for Malc too, as we haven't alerted him to the possibility yet. Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 20 Nov 06 - 07:27 PM Tom's correct, small change in the running order for the meet sessions, with Keith doing his "Meet the serious side of Keith Donnelly" session so you'll probably want to catch both the Toms and Keith! All these collaborations too, Jon Harvison and Phil Hare will be "doing a bit together" as well, and of course there is the Dave & Annie collaboration with Brian Peters for the Kipling session "Soldier, Soldier" using some of the songs previously featured in "The Widows Uniform". Caravan parking is sold out, and we are getting close to a full sell out on festival week-end tickets (best to book on line to avoid disappointment) Still OK for Indoor Camping - or anyone brave enough to tent! Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: My guru always said Date: 28 Nov 06 - 04:33 PM A Wonderful Festival yet again, thanks to Malc & all the Bedworth helpers!! Thanks too Malc, for the big tin of Choccies, it certainly kept us going at the Mudgather & we passed the few remaining ones at the bottom of the tin to the bar staff to polish off *grin* Mind you, there were plenty of chocolates & chocolate concoctions brought along to share & I think everyone went away well-stuffed. All hail to JudeL and her 200 handmade biscuits which went down very nicely, thank you very much!! The MudRaffle raised a brill £46 for the MudCat which will be winging it's way across the pond asap. Thanks to all who brought prizes, bought tickets and endured my demanding raffle drawing experience. The most thanks have to go to my Lovely Assistant, Selchie-(RS) who spent the whole Gather persuading people to buy tickets, what a Fab Girlie she is! Maybe next time we'll persuade her to sing to us aswell..... What an excellent venue the Black Bank was!! The Landlord seemed to be delighted to have a Folkie presence & was falling over himself to look after us. The venue certainly helped to make the Gather such a success but the main ingredients were all the Catters who made the journey away from the town venues to come & join the Gather. It was really good to put more faces to names and I understand that there is a multitude of photos being prepared for our delectation! Thanks to everyone who brought chocs (and yes, I did try a chocolate coated carrot, not to mention 3 of Jude's gingerbread Mudcats with chocolate bottoms). Thanks to everyone who made it such a good weekend! Here's to next year's. Kitty |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Sue the Borderer Date: 28 Nov 06 - 06:53 PM Sorry I didn't make it to the mudgather, Hils. It suddenly turned really cold on us while we were dancing and all I wanted to do afterwards was sit in the Civic Hall and thaw out. And thanks Malc, for a great Festival. I'm glad I made it this year. Sue |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Lenny's mum (inactive) Date: 28 Nov 06 - 07:26 PM Had a wonderful time at the festival. I was unable to make it last year so this was my first stay on the Rugby Club. It made a great site for the caravan, being able to roll into bed after the late sing was wonderful. We thanked the staff there and they said 'the festival was welcome back anytime. Why not in the summer when the weather is warmer'. Can you arrange that Malc? please! Bedworth wouldn't be Bedworth if it wasn't at the end of November and our Christmas party though! |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Moses Date: 29 Nov 06 - 03:32 AM Thanks for another great festival Malc. We (Moses and The Ref) only managed the Saturday, but what a day! So much to do, so many friends to see and so little time....... A great big Thank You to Guru for organising the Gather and for the lovely chocolate cake to mark the 'Big One'. Looking forward to seeing the pics Christine |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: George Papavgeris Date: 29 Nov 06 - 04:50 AM Nessie, in the car on the way back: "Why is it that we enjoy Bedworth so much more than any other festival? There is something in the makeup of the festival, perhaps the people we meet, perhaps the ultra-relaxed atmosphere, perhaps the fact that there is no 'star system' but the whole thing is so involving and participative". Says it all, I think. Thanks Malcolm, once more. |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 29 Nov 06 - 12:25 PM Thanks to Malc & the team for a lovely festival. Thanks to MGAS for organising the Mudgather & Raffle & for the nice things she says, I'm always happy to be of help by selling tickets ~ It was probably the most enjoyable Mudgather I've been to so far. Nice to see so many new faces. It's got to be the best way to enjoy ourselves & to help Mudcat, especially as it involves munching chocolates & Jude's biscuits all afternoon. Rosie x |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: IWTATBM Date: 29 Nov 06 - 02:15 PM A very enjoyable first Mudgather for me. Thanks to all involved in its organisation - I will toast your health with a pint of Shires in The Bull tonight! |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Malc Bedworth Date: 29 Nov 06 - 07:12 PM Hi everyone, Thanks for all the kind words - we are just delighted that everyone had such a great time, I think even I enjoyed it this year! Time for a few weeks off now before we start looking towards next year The 30th Bedworth Folk Festival! should be really special, I want to get a few "nostalgia" acts in and perhaps some sort of tribute to those that have appeared over the years but are no longer with us - right away I can think of Tony Rose and Alex Atterson who appeared at the very first Bedworth! - maybe we could have a concert of the songs that some of these heroes of the past performed, perhaps performed by the up and coming youngsters - just thinking aloud really, if anyone has any ideas just drop me a pm or email me malcg@bedworth-festival.info thanks again for the great support you all give to the festival! Malc. |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: muppitz Date: 30 Nov 06 - 10:55 AM Had a good un Malc! Sorry I wasn't at the gather folks, I'd clearly had enough pop to make me forget about it! muppitz x |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Shantyfreak Date: 30 Nov 06 - 12:23 PM I attended my first and maybe last mudcat gathering at Bedworth. Even allowing for the awkward venue at the Black Bank I was disgisted at the amount of background noise from people tuning up, selling raffle tickets, offering food and generally nattering away throughout the songs, even the soft unaccompanied efforts. I had though that the music might have been the reason for the gathering. Obviously I was wrong. |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: John J Date: 30 Nov 06 - 12:50 PM I sang unaccompanied, as did my Ma who sings fairly quietly. Neither of us had any problem with back-ground noise. The audience of Mudcatters and others were very supportive. No complaints. The chocs were wonderful, the company even better. Perhaps you just came in at a bad time. John |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: daughter Date: 30 Nov 06 - 12:51 PM Shantyfreak - what you experienced was the sound of people having "fun"............... |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Shantyfreak Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:52 PM I grant that things may have improved (after I left LOL) but in the twenty minutes or so I was there, I struggled to hear the words of the songs and I was postioned centrally in the room not tucked away in some remote corner. I agree with daughter's comments above that it was the sound of people having "fun" (her quotes not mine) but different people have different ideas of fun. I can do nothing except repeat my previous statement I had though that the music might have been the reason for the gathering. Obviously I was wrong. Each to their own. |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Jock O' Dreams Date: 30 Nov 06 - 04:45 PM Folk music is about socializing as much as the music and after all it was a Mud "Gather" not a "Sing" . Poeple wanted to meet the faces they only new as net names. That was my intrepretation of the meet. Still each to their own! Thanks to all the organizers of this and the Festival as a whole for a very memorable week-end I sang my wee heart out! Ta very much. Jim |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Richard Atkins Date: 30 Nov 06 - 08:04 PM Tiz a Gather of freinds to talk chat sing and enjoy with humour. Wonderful songs on the Fringe Party ! Shantyfreak a party with sing worked . Too many bums on seats now in concerts that dont contribute to folk , they just listen ! |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: My guru always said Date: 01 Dec 06 - 04:29 AM Sorry you didn't enjoy the Gather Shantyfreak, but as Jim quite rightly pointed out, it was a Gather not a singaround. So often at festivals we all pass like ships in the night on the way to the next singaround, session, concert, bar or bed & often people don't get a chance to get to know each other. We've all got the Cat in common as well as a shared interest in singing, music, dancing or tradition, so we are already partway to being good friends. The Gathers are a place to meet, and if I can steal a Middle Bar expression (Tony WILL fine me), laugh, drink & sing! (and yes, daughter, it WAS fun *grin*) I think most people enjoyed themselves and I understand that some of the Guests will be registering as Catters too, so it can't have been that bad! Personally I love the Gathers & always get a good feeling from having 'organised' them - though they tend to run themselves with the aid of the inflatable MadCat. Being able to raise a little cash for the MudCat (with the blessing of the Festival Organisers) is a Bonus and it also helps to bring home to Catters that we all owe something to Max to help keep the Cat running (see UK Friends of MudCat thread). I'm not able to give much in the way of cash, but if my 'organising skills' can help then I gladly offer them. See you all again at the next one, keep on singing & making music! |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: MuddleC Date: 01 Dec 06 - 04:56 AM Apologies for not making the mudcat meet, but walking down to the black bank from the centre of Town, and back to the car the night before 'did my L.knee in', and the dodgey R.ankle came out to protest the next day. I had to sit throughout the cedlidh refusing requests to dance with women it was that bad! Cally Hanna did hang around with me though, so I kept her from attending too!! |
Subject: RE: Bedworth Festival 2006 From: Shantyfreak Date: 01 Dec 06 - 01:48 PM Thanks to "My guru always said" and to "Richard Atkins" and others for putting the point across so well. As an active participant (not just one who sits and listens) I find singarounds are the best part of festivals since you meet the most involved people there. However I quite take the point that the mudcat gathering at the Black bank was not a simple singaround. My education is slowly progressing. |
