Subject: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: Splott Man Date: 20 Sep 06 - 07:42 AM The wonderful Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen will be at Llantrisant FC next Wednesday 27 September. I for one am looking forward to this with eager anticipation. I've been singing his Darcey Farrow since the early 70s, now I can hear it done properly. If you want to see them at a gig nearer you, go to http://www.compassrosemusic.com/dates.html cheers Splott Man |

Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: Anne Lister Date: 20 Sep 06 - 05:15 PM We're hoping to come along ... Steve even has a new song (making his folk club repertoire three songs now, I think!). I have a new couple of songs myself but whether I'll have time to practise them sufficiently is a matter of doubt! But I've met them both a few times in the US, so it would be good to catch them with a full guest set. Anne |

Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:18 AM I, for one, am really looking forward to next Wednesday's Welsh debut gig by Steve and Mandy at Llantrisant. It was 30 years ago when I played the first album by Matthews' Southern Comfort, and my ears pricked up I heard Iain Matthews (who had left Fairport Convention) singing Darcy Farrow, a strange, beautiful, odd little ballad from the pen of Steve Gillette - little did I think that I would have to wait another 30 years just to see Steve and Mandy! Steve's a mighty fine guitarist, and Mandy's a mighty fine singer and multi-instrumentalist too - when I get a minute, I'll jot down some of their blurb. |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: Anne Lister Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:28 PM Steve and Mandy, Mick? Surely it's Cindy, unless she's transmogrified! Anne |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Sep 06 - 04:31 PM Cindy has great experience with Child material as well as the stuff she and Steve usually team up on. I hope you will find she's included a good bit of it in their set list. But whatever they do, they are not to be missed! Please be sure to send them back Stateside. ~S~ |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 23 Sep 06 - 07:46 PM Steve and CINDY! Oh God, I am mortified. I do apologise... I've not been myself lately. And I was just about to correct Splott Man for the spelling of Darcy Farrow, too! |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Guest Date: 24 Sep 06 - 12:07 AM As an American fan of this fine duo, I thoroughly recommend them. Vocals and harmonies are exquisite. Steve is a finger-style guitar player of high excellence (you have to hear him rip off the trips in "Darcia Farrow" to appreciate how good he is). Cindy has the purest voice and plays guitar and English Concertina to a high standard. They choose their material well, from Steve and Cindy's own compositions to the tradition to Bernard Cribbin's "Right, said Fred" and other esoteric songs. They will leave you wanting more! |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Richard Jones Date: 24 Sep 06 - 06:12 PM Have you seen the hilarious jokes they've posted on their website? |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: vlmagee Date: 24 Sep 06 - 06:34 PM Splott Man, you may have to ask Steve to do Darcy Farrow. I went about 14 months and 3 concerts in a row before I heard it again in August. They have so much in their repertoire (which is a good thing), that sometimes he doesn't do it. But I don't think he would mind at all, if you ask him. (If they are doing 2 sets, then wait for the break). Also, on his "How To Play Guitar Like I Do" CD, he teaches how to play it. Still way above my skill level, but I keep hoping. They are wonderful, and lovely people too. Enjoy! |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 25 Sep 06 - 07:40 AM Never mind Steve doing Darcy Farrow - can we have some cat songs, Cindy? Open That Can is my (and Olly's) favourite. |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: Dartford Warbler Date: 25 Sep 06 - 04:16 PM If you want a preview of them before Llantrisant they are at Dartford on Tuesday 26 Sep 2006 Dartford Folk Club thread |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 27 Sep 06 - 02:04 PM Hooray - Mudcat is back! Steve and Cindy are playing tonight for Llantrisant Folk Club the Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun at 8.30pm. I'm going early to be sure of a seat. |
Subject: RE: Gillette/Mangsen at Llantrisant From: GUEST,Dr Price Date: 27 Sep 06 - 08:19 PM I've just got back from the Steve Gillette/Cindy Mangsen gig at Llantrisant - they were really, truly great. Superb, astonishing playing coupled with a sheer love of music, with voices that fit together like a good whisky goes with expensive cream in your coffee. Steve did Darcy Farrow and turned it into a ballad of sheer beauty (and his guitar playing was jaw-dropping) while Cindy steered her way easily through a tongue-twisting true tale about the cat who got its head stuck in a waste-disposal gadget. There were songs, tunes and completely off-the-wall numbers as Steve and Cindy worked magic with the time - how could they fit in all those years making lovely music together? It was a joyous, complete night, and one which it was a privilege to part in. Well done, both! |
