Before you raise up your hands and say 'how could you' (post such a thread), I want you to know that I sincerely believe Keith to be a very fine person. However I think his humour is rubbish. This is a thread for all those who think Keith's sense of humour is rubbish (though I expect a few might want to come to his defence). Why should only those people who like Keith's malarkey express themselves (by laughing during his acts)? Why must a significant minority leave the audience in silence, under some pretext of 'getting another beer?' This thread is for you. Please don't feel Keith will be offended by this thread, he will not be I am sure, and it might be one thing he could joke about that might be funny to us all.

Why do people feel the need to start threads to have a go at things they don't like. If you don't find him funny don't bother watching him. And should this not be in the BS section anyway?

Well said Mrs.Duck.
Popinjay, if you are stupid enough to sit through the performance of an artiste whose material you dislike- even though he is a "very fine person", do you know him? - then you can hardly be taken aback at not enjoying the act. Would you order a meal containing ingredients you hated then expect sympathy when you didn't like it? Thousands of people enjoy Keith and none of them would notice your abscence - so follow this simple rule - DON'T GO TO KEITH DONELLY PERFORMANCES - or be a prat and moan about him, but don't waste our time. Please!

You will no doubt say nasty things about me now - but please bear in mind I don't care about the opinions of someone like you.

The Badger

At some folk festivals you can hardly avoid him, if you go to a concert to see the other acts you either have to sit through it all yet again or climb over everyone and hang around outside.
I know the kids love him, but he's not to my taste.
I don't much care for people telling me to do silly things, with the threat of embarassing me if I don't (says she, who earns money on a Saturday night persuading people to get out of their seats to do very sensible and elegant things, and who wouldn't dream of embarassing anyone!!!)

As for Badger, I don't know what you are complaining about, you didn't need to open the thread, and you haven't answered the question or given your opinion of Keith's humour.

People either love it or hate it, and those who love it are loud in his praise, festival organisers need to hear all views

Mo,you've missed the point. I'm not complaining, simply observing that if a person sits through an act by a performer they do not enjoy, they can hardly expect to be entertained - but that is not the performers fault.

I opened the thread because I know Keith and enjoy his act. Why did you?

As for the questions - the answers are so glaringly obvious they are not worth mentioning. Why leave under a pretext though? If anyone bothers to ask why you are leaving, tell them.

Why do people always say things like "He/She/They were rubbish" or "He/She/They were crap"

I believe its all about whether somebody suits your taste.

That certainly doesn't make them rubbish or crap. They are very good, but do not necessarily appeal to your taste.

Well as a small time humourist myself I can honestly say Keith Donelly's humour is not rubbish. I do study the mechanisms thereof.

It is quirky, off the wall, and his mind is lightning quick. It is also enjoyed by many so it is popular.

Now define rubbish.

If rubbish is anything you don't find funny then you are right in one very narrow context. YOU.
Have you considered that your sense of humour is also relatively unique (sic).

Keith is an acquired taste and a lot have acquired it. Long since.
And I have to say his turnover of joke/patter/routines is also key to the act. He hasn't gone stale as far as I see but then I don't see him at every opportunity.

It is not unknown for people to assume, that those who do not share their sense of humour, do not have a sense of humour at all.
If this were true, we'd all find Roy 'Chubby' Brown amusing!

Hello

I think Keith (if he reads it) will find this thread amusing and I would absolutely not have posted it if I had thought otherwise. The thread itself is meant as a joke which those of you out there with a sense of humour will have appreciated. I also bet (if he finds out about it) he will use it to get a few laughs at his gigs (just buy me a pint Keith). If Keith is offended by it I will unreservedly apologise for posting it (proof needed as we can all post as KD, but this can be arranged). I would even be willing to sit through the whole of one of his sets as a penance. So lets ask Keith himself .... are you offended by this thread Keith or can you see the humour in it? Where are you Keith Donnelly?

Quick reply to Badger. No I would not say anything nasty about you, you are entitled to your opinion and it is welcome here. Actually I don't go to Keith's performances (for similar reasons to those given by Mo the caller), but I do leave them when he's the next act on at the festival.

Quick reply to Skipy. There are many acts I don't like, but would never start a thread about them. This is different, can't you see?

So hold fire until we hear from Keith. Someone here said they were a friend of Keith's - ask him if he can see the humour. There's no need to be offended on his behalf - really. If I have genuinely offended him I will do the penance.

GUEST,Popinjay -

do we have to define what a troll is? this is the web, this is a forum, it carries shorthand. Unless the Guest poster is Keith himslf I think we should eductate the Guest - but I don't do patronising -

So if the Guest sticks around maybe some of the terms like "thread drift" will become familiar. As thread starter you own the first post. No more no less.

For my money Keith is a perfect Festival guest: he certainly entertains the kids and they all seem to turn up wherever he is playing. As a bunch they could teach a few adults a thing or two. From wild laughter and larking about Keith can have all the kids quiet as a mouse while he shows the other side of his not inconsiderable talent. Keep on Keith.
Oh I don't do tongue in cheek...foot in mouth sometimes!!

Keith Donnelly has written some great serious songs, Laura, The Hunter and Two Tall Trees are my favourites . You don't get to hear these live very often as festival organisers and goers expect him to make them laugh and so he has to play the funny man.

He was telling us once he had a spot at a festival allocated for him to sing his serious singer/songwriter material. It was billed in the programme as "The Serious Side of Keith Donnelly"   unfortunately the MC was not aware and on introducing him bet the audience he would not last 5 mins, in fact he did last the whole set and some of the audience went away disappointed that he had not done his slice of bacon and other favourite silly stuff..

Keith makes a living from writing jokes and gags and selling them on , also he has written some Game shows and has also written some very good children's songs.

A couple of times I have witnessed him coming out and entertaining the queues waiting to get into final concerts at some of the bigger festivals.

One festival that I will not name the people in the queue were getting very irate as sound checking was late and the bar was also in the venue and so people could not access the drinks either. Keith came out with his guitar and started a sing song in the queue and diffused the situation so well that no-one noticed when they eventually opened the doors. More artists at festivals should be like him.
Sorry to waffle on

At last we are getting some proper discussion and a bit of humour too, which is all I hoped for really. Mr Red you say you don't do patronising but that is exactly what your last thread was. You DO do patronising, and rude, but it would be nice to see a bit of the humour you profess to have. Come on, this is your chance to shine; if it's good all can have a laugh at my expense, but at least we will be laughing (I'll admit to you if it's good, even if it cuts to the quick). You should take a leaf out of Nellie Clatt's book, and Goik's who's having a try. So let's lighten up a bit and have a bit of a fun for Keith's sake. Wouldn't it be ironic if I congratulate a poster for their wit and it turns out to be Keith Donnnely? Perhaps he could do a 'make me laugh' workshop for those like me who don't get it. We want to understand Keith, we really do.

Unnamed Guest, glad to see you've finally paid a visit to the dictionary. Is that what popinjay really means? During my school days my friends said my nickname meant 'good friend'! PLEASE give yourself a name or it's impossible to see if you're the same Guest who posted earlier or a new one (a few lines showing the ability to put your case without the need for abuse would be a good indicator). Name yourself (be brave), and then we can communicate further. If you are the Guest who posted earlier I could make a few suggestions if you like?

Further to Fran's lovely post (some of you could learn a lot from Fran), I too have been 'entertained' on a number of occasions by Mr Donnely, (whether I wanted it or not), while waiting in the queue for the last performance of the evening. Everyone having to go 'WOAH, WOAH' in unison can become a little tedious after a while. Missed a couple of good performances like that!

I agree with Fran that Keith is wonderful with children, but the same type of humour at festivals for adults just doesn't do it for me, though I accept that a lot of people do like him (Just wish you'd explain why instead of all the abuse – granted Mr Red tried initially before drifting off somewhat).

You can please some of the all of the people all of sometimes...

Oh look here's how easy it is -

I think Keith is observant, funny and entertaining, and he's a great guy off stage. I was awakened at Sidmouth festival after the Late Night Extra by a whole load of teenagers singing 'Everybody wants to be a bear'. This is significant because a. the young folkies are interested in this aspect of folk and it brings them to folk festivals with their parents who want to see the boring stuff and b. he's never been asked, so has never been to do Sidmouth! Why is this I ask?

Sal
