Lots and lots of sessions, workshops as well as the concerts.

I would recomend the Irish Tune session at The Irish Heartland on the Saturday night but there again that might just be because I'm running it.

Seriously, lots and lots of wonderful music and the beer in most of the pubs is wonderful

There will be an English session run by a lady called Diane on, I think, the Sat afternoon (Cask & Cutler?). The post festival session on Sunday evening will probably be mainly a mixture of English/Continental with afew Irish (if memory serves from last year) at the Kelham Island Tavern

English music is a forte I believe of the scene in Sheffield
Diane Richardson is the one!

Irish sessions take place weekly/nightly I believe usually

But I am there somewhere for the unaccompanied singers ~ Red Deer Is one venue check the programme when available!

Diane's session will, I think, be continuing a bit later than last year so that musicians involved in the afternoon dance displays can look in there as well.

There is an outline programme on the website. Full details (I devoutly hope) will be in the print programme, which I am working on as we speak. There is still information to be finalised and some material still not received; but we are nearly there.

Next year I am optimistic (!) that the team will believe me when I tell them that everything needs to be set more-or-less in stone at least three months before the event (dance schedules apart; dance teams are notoriously hard to pin down until the last minute).

That said, this year's festival will be well worth a visit by anybody's standards. Beside a roster of excellent performers (many locally based) there is plenty of stuff for the social dancers and for the session and singaround-goers. The range of free, "official fringe" events alone would keep anyone thoroughly occupied for the weekend, but of course we do encourage people to buy tickets (a range are available, from weekend "seasons" to individual events) and go to everything they possibly can. We are mostly self-financing, after all.

Malcolm's as usual doing a stirling job putting the programme together - great line up and a great weekend - yes we are a young festival - year 3 and set to be a festival that will be an annual must -theres loads to do for musicians singers dancers and listeners young and old - we usually have hard standing for campers and carvans and indoor camping too so check it out

As said before English sessions are something of a backbone to the general Sheffield scene with Richard and crew from Hekety and Dianne and Barry doing fantastic jobs in promoting throughout the year. There is (from memory) an English session Friday evening at Kelham Tavern, Dianne's session at Cask on Saturday with the finish time open space at numerous pubs for anyone to set up something at nightime ask at the office when you get there !! Plus Diane and crew sometimes set up on Sunday afternoon at the Museum as an alternative to the concert and the Survivors session at Kelham Tavern. And that's just the English sessions !!!

Would like to say that the Sheffield area is undoubtedly the real ale enthusiast's/ticker's/scooper's centre of the drinking universe. Some of the best places for this activity are a number of the pubs where the festival sessions are taking place.

The punctuality and cleanliness of the Sheffield tram system should be used as an example to other cities in the UK. The tramstop for the Museum site is but a stone's throw away. (The museum is a fascinating place to visit in its own right).

The only thing that may take you aback the first time you see them are the ladies of the night who ply their trade in the area where the main concerts are held. However, in all my visits to the area (for ale sampling!) their presence has not caused any problems.

Have they got the road system sorted out yet?

Road works all around the Kelham Island area with roads closed and no entry signs. Many familiar 'land marks' have also been demolished so even if you knew the area before you might not recognise it now:-(.

Black Diamond - yes it's the same project as last year and it's a pain in the bum! It's the council's way of 'improving' the roads in Sheffield: that is making it worse for car drivers whilst not doing anything positive for public transport, cyclists or walkers.

The road works are part two of Sheffield's Inner Ring Road. We may have two way traffice aliong the main route by the Festival weekend but as they are making significant progress. Yes JohnB tey (Crucible) were mega at Bromyard.

Ive just seen on another forum that Val Huzzard will be hosting a 'General Session' in the Kelham Island Tavern, Russell Street, Sheffield 3 from 8pm on Fri.27th October, as part of the Sheffield Festival.
also Steve is running a melodeon workshop (East Anglian tunes) on the Sunday 29th October. Kelham Island Tavern, 10:00 am - 12:00 noon.
Im going indoor camping too!!! when Ive found out where it is, and if theres anywhere safe to leave my melodeon when dancing out in Sheffield on Saturday

There is a list of dance teams in the print programme; though no firm timetable for performances. In addition, I gather that the Sheffield Giants have been added to the roster since I was given info for print.

The current list, then, would be:

Morris and similar dancers are always difficult to get firm commitments from much in advance because so many people are involved, and it is usually only a week or two before the event that the dance display timetable is finalised. There is a "skeleton" timetable circulating at present, but final details haven't so far reached me.

The displays (except as noted above) will be in the City Centre between 11 am at 4 pm, at Orchard Square, the Peace Gardens and outside the Cathedral; finishing at Kelham Island.

Well, we have paid for our tickets and programme and booked up the digs. None of this indoor (or outdoor for that matter) camping lark for us these days!!!

that the Spiers and Boden concert is AFTER the Hekety ceilidh on the Friday night at 23:45?
I assume the tram system closes well before the end, so I guess we will need to book a taxi?
Anyone any idea of when the concert will end?

The concert will finish at about 1 am. No trams at that time; perhaps just a few buses. It depends where you are staying. The festival office should have a list of taxi firms.

Thank you all for the info about the taxis and the trams. I think you can also get a ticket that will cover several days which may even be more cost effective as we are up there from Friday to Monday. The trams are wonderful. No scratched grafitti on the windows like the buses down here. But then again they do have a driver AND a conductor.

Really looking forward to seeing Crucible for the first time. I recall doing a review of their (first?) album for the late "What's On Folks? (Kent)" magazine. a few years ago.

And others like Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, Last Night's Fun and Steve Tilston who are firm favourites should make it a great festival. Not forgetting the ritual dancing. the singarounds and the beer of course :-)

Just got back having seen Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner, Sharon Fountain, Treebeard, Flossie on Sunday pm

Thanks to all the organisers and the landlords of Fagans and Red Deer

Trams cost £1.20 and covered a number of stops v good value I thought

Sheffield undergoing major road works (a year on) and steel industry now only evident in empty buildings being prepared for new flat type accommodation!

Kelham Island Tavern heaving all weekend and into small hours echoing to fiddle music

Thanks to Judy Knight also for running the singarounds (with me) and JulieF, Jim McD and Ken Johnson who snores for England and all who sang specially to John the Navy chappy, Steve and Maggie and Les and Maggie, Dave and Mick and party from Rotherham, Clive and Linda, Chris and Dolly and Hel from Alfreton, Nikki Snell and all who made the singarounds so interesting!!

Hello to anyone I managed to meet over the weekend - I certainly recognise most of Ray's list.

Some great sessions. Chris and Sue's opening one, the singarounds at Fagans and the Red Deer, Brian Howard's session at the Cask and Cutler and of course ours at the Irish Heartland on Saturday night ( even though I say so myself)

Personally I was hampered my need to try and keep on top of the house as its still on the market ( any one out there want a really nice , well decorated, house - speak now before I manage to drop something else of the carpet). Next year will be living in Sheffield and not worring about the housework so will be able to get more involved.

Lovely to meet you again Ray and I enjoyed talking about a few mutual friends I hadn't thought about for years.

Lovely weekend. Spent most of it at the Kelham Island Tavern, but had fun at Jabadaw ceilidh, at the Park Bench Socal Club gig and generally getting quite merry. lovely vibe, good fun (not convinced about that Bose sound system, though).
