I heard an ugly rumour that this truly brilliant session has come to an end and that sessioneers are looking for a new venue.

We've got a pub called 'The Beech' in Chorlton - sadly no 'Beaches' though (where did I put that bucket and spade?).

Is this new John? The Irish session moved to the Beech to the Marble some years ago. I did attempt a session in the Marble last yaer but the place got so full of footballers from the Leisure Centre that we could move or hear each other.

I apologise for my sarcasm - it was unnecessary (but just the teeniest bit enjoyable - oh, the guilt!!).

I'm sorry to hear that the sessions at the Beech have finished - I never got round to going - even though it was on my doorstep (more guilt!).

I think that we really do need more folky venues in S. Manchester. I suppose that it all comes down to finding suitable premises (like 'hen's teeth' these days).

Get yerself down to the Railway at Lymm (not exactly South Manchester):

1) Music session on Thursday evenings (this is nothing to do with the folk club that is also on a Thursday evening, but in the upstairs room). A fairly strong Irish bias, but English & Scottish is also played.

2) Singing (trad) on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month.

3) Excellent beer.

Shimrod,

South Manchester is a bit short of folk in its many guises. Venues are crucial but so are people who simply want to sing or play most weeks.

John's post about Lymm is a great example of lots of good things in one place because lots of people are ready to sing and play. I have enjoyed the sing around and the Folk Club and really enjoyed both.

I am sure S. man must have plenty of folkies but they don't seem to get together much.

The Irish session that used to collect in the Beech is now in the Feathers on Barlow Moor Road, Chorlton, Manchester.

The room is good with more space, the music as brilliant as ever.

Jim, The Lloyds is still here in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, sorry to say it is a shadow, or more liely a shell, of its old self. Once it many rooms now it is more or less one large room with no atmosphere and poor beer. it was once popular with the Irish community now it is popular with no one much

Felix Doran I am not familiar with but I did see Roy Bailey at the Lloyds about 10 years ago when Annie Morris moved the White Swan Folk Club from Ladybarn. It went ok until the landlord of the day thought he would biuld on the music idea by having Kareoke(?) sorry can't spell that, om the same night. Michael McGoldrick has been known to join the session that know abides in the feathers but for a while I think.

In the days I was living in Chorlton (Keppel Road), Lloyd's was a fairly rough house, a warren of small rooms, I seem to remember.
We recorded a story from Irish Travellers about the sessions that used to go on there.
Felix Doran - one of the most famous of the Irish pipers, second only to his brother Johnny, used to go there every Sunday morning to play. One morning there was a crowd listening to him playing (solo) when a local man, slightly drunk, staggered in, sat down at the old out-of-tune upright piano in the corner and began (sort of) to accompany him. One of the listeners strode over and slammed the piano lid down on his hands, breaking several of his fingers - a somewhat harsh form of music criticism or what!

Keppel Road hey, home of the Beeggees!

Chorlton has changed more than a bit, full of wine bars and restuarants. I think more good beer is available than when we came here in '78. The session in the Feathers is excellent and other places have live music.

We have a weekly folk club in the Cricket Club run by Jozeph Roberts and that attracts an eclectic bunch of people but not many of the traditional persuasion. The problem is trying to find a room where people can sit and sing a a bit. I think the folk club scene is getting busier generally so who knows.

It's every second and fourth Wed of the month, we don't do songs at all.
We have songs on the Monday, every Monday, except when there's a guest! This Monday as another thread says-it's the Orpheus Supertones who also play a lot of tunes!

I went in the Lloyds, one Friday lunchtime, for some lunch (they claim that they do food now). The place was about half full but the bloke behind the bar said "there's an hour's wait". An hour!!! What were they doing - hand-rearing the chicken and growing the spuds, from scratch, in a grow-bag? Needless to say I haven't been back!

I don't think I'd call the wine bars useless!
The Iguana bar is in Chorlton and they put on loads of folky/world events. Not always my kind of stuff but they do present lots of live music. Worth a look in my opinion.

The Monday night (mainly) Irish session has now moved to Lloyds in Chorlton ; these days Lloyds is actually quite much - much more than either the Beech or the Feathers and with better acoustics than either.
