Subject: Pyrates: A Crossover Genre?

I just picked up a new CD from an Annapolis based group/troupe known as the Pyrates Royale: "Lyve Behind Bars." Excellent blend of sea chanteys and folk traditions. They seem to blend some of the fun elements of an acting troupe with the more serious mission of preserving some folk traditions [ok, maybe all they want is treasure...].

What is with the pirate genre? Is this a scion of the sea chantey crowd? Out of work actors? Is is a genre? I note that in Tampa the locals celebrate Halloween as Guavaeen (some sort of Bucaneer inspired Mardi Gras).

Just thought I'd start a new thread....

Cheers, Brian
