Just a note that "Hamish's Cafe" is the new name of the "Moorcock Inn" as was, on the road between Barrowfod and Gisburn. It is run by Hamish's daughter, Fiona. Music sessions have resumed.

Well, I think I took the text version out from the site that the above clicky leads to when I put it on as a Kindle file, available on Amazon.

When I hear an introduction "This is a Christy Moore song", if I get the chance I refer the singer to Christy's autobiography/songbook where he assiduously credits the source for every song he picked up on his travels.

I don't know whether Christy or Hamish kept diaries/journals, but the detail and honesty of their respective reminiscences is remarkable considering the conditions and habits of the times.

I was doing a bit of support for Christy Moore in deBarras pub in Clonakilty when Christy gave me the news of Hamish's passing.

He had a huge influence on Christy - one of his songs has been in his repertoire for many years- 'Black is the colour' was given to him by Hamish, although I don't think he's known at all in Ireland?

Since I last posted on this thread in 2006 saying I would buy a copy, I actually got given one by my kind friend, Ewan McVicar! Subtitled "Reminiscences of a Fat Folk Singer".
As Ross says, it's a great read if you can get your head around the vast volumes of alcohol consumed!

A bit late to this conversation but may still be of interest to some seeking Hamish's "Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice".
The galley proof from Gallus Publishing remains on-line.

Happy reading (it's a joy!)

Saw him twice in Berlin in the late 70s got a photo somewhere, Hamish signed it but over the years the ink faded.... hope I find the pic when 'spring cleaning'.
Got his CD 'The Definitive Transatlantic Collection' in front of me, from within the sleevenotes I quote
"I think I have an allergic reaction to leather. I find that every time I wake in the morning with my shoes on I have a headache"

'lifted' from the obituary written by Ewan McVicar and published in the Guardian Newspaper.
What a man.
H.

I would certainly buy the book if it came back into print: I recently bought the double CD "Cod Liver Oil and the Orange juice - The Transatlantic Anthology" which has a biography and some photos in the CD sleeve. I'm singing and laughing along to it in the car.
I'm pretty sure I got the details of how to obtain it off another thread on Mudcat, and very reasonable it was too! On Sanctuary recods CMDDD1369.

I hope the originals of the photos still exist.

I've got a copy (acquired only a few weeks ago) and the photo reproduction is not much better than the glue. Scan those and you'd get a moire-fringed mess.

There was no family dispute. We have looked at having the book republished. Ewan put the words up on the net and I have been meaning to get the photos scanned and sent to Ewan but unfortunately with family and working life have not yet done so. It is great to see so many people still interested in the book. This will spur me on to get scanning.

The poor binding of the book probably ensured that most copies have fallen apart by now. Finding a second hand copy is most unlikely. A downloaded version from Ewan McVicar sounds like the best option.

Cod Liver Oil And The Orange Juice went out of print after the first edition and because of possibly family dispute will never be reprinted.

Some years ago I downloaded my version without the photos for a very small fee from Ewan McVicar.

If you are in Nottingham City centre sometime then the Angel Row library had a copy some years ago.

Is this not the sub-title of "Cod Liver Oil and the Orange Juice" which I think is long out of print?
Ewan McVicar worked with Hamish on this and, a search on Mudcat should lead you to him. He might have some ideas as to where you can get a copy.
I can't check on anything as my copy is with Len Partridge, 400 miles away in Edinburgh. Hamish was always billed as "The big man of Scottish folk music" but he signed it for me "To the real big man of Scottish folk music". I'm 6'7"
Good luck with the search.
