I've been curious about wiki's some time. I'm not sure how or if one would fit in with folkinfo but as mediawiki installs easily on this system, I thought I'd just put one up and see what if anything happens.

Please feel free to have a play. I'd be interested to hear any thoughts.

Annoying tho' it will be, you might find it useful to have some sort of login for editing - those uglies wil inevitably discover and start spamming...

Well I gather so far that one can block in a few ways and I think it can use a spam blacklist.

spam blacklist - that'd do.
I was just thinking how annoying it'd be to have to waste time zapping the stuff.

Slightly related, but different, have you looked at the "TiddlyWiki" system? It's probably best described as a _personal_ wiki in ONE file. Very neat idea and would make a useful way to hold one's own song lyrics.
I've been playing with it for a while - quite seductive!

The Wikipedia entry "folk music" is worth having a look at. And I see the mudcat is in a high position in its links.

(This isn't me saying that Jon's initiative isn't a potentially useful one - only it pushed me into looking up Wikipedia on folk, which I hadn't done before, and I thought it looked worth passing it on for others who might have missed it.)

Interesting McGrath. I knew there was some folk stuff there as sometimes I see I get visitors from Wiki articles (Sovay seems to be one that crops up a few times for some reason) but I've never really looked into what they have there. Will have a read tommorrow.

Nothing's perfect. I find the approach interesting though and certainly prefer it to wading through lots of comments to pick out the one or two of interest.

All that said, having had more of a play with mediawiki (which btw is the software wikipedia uses) today and looked around a bit, I think it highly unlikely that I will be keeping it or perhaps using any off the shelf wiki.

It is giving me some ideas though, although I doubt I'll be doing anything until after my planned "annual maintance" in November...

For now I'll just leave it up there, most likely idle.
