Don was on BBC Breakfast TV on his birthday yesterday, doing publicity for his current UK & Ireland tour and his new "Best of" album. That comes with a "free" DVD of his 1980 Dominion Theatre concert (London), which should be excellent. I've played that album pretty often since it came out in 1982.

Not only a wonderful song writer, but thrilling live (in person). He commands the stage, holding the audience in his hands, like Pete Seeger always did. Happy Birthday to one of the all-time greats.

Yes, he's one of my favourites too. American Pie is an amazing piece of work. One of our radio stations plays it quite often and I never tire of it.

I didn't realise he was just 4 days younger than me.

Don Mclean has written some of my favourite songs, castles in the air and Vincent are beautifully constructed songs.Happy birthday to a true musical giant.

On a starry starry night perhaps?
