Today has been surreal. I arrived at school this morning and went to my classroom where I sat down to finish a few last minute things before my students arrived when there was an announcement over the loud speaker, "TEACHERS, PLEASE CHECK YOUR CLOSETS FOR PEOPLE." Hmmm. Apparently there had been a break-in last night and no one knew if the person was still in the building or not. Then the news came that a teacher who went home early on Friday because she was not feeling well was found dead in her home this morning. :(   At lunchtime, I received a flyer in my mailbox (as did all the other teachers) that a convicted sex offender (Class 1) had moved into an apartment that is within 250 yards of the elementary school.

That's it. I'm going to bed. That's too much weirdness for me in one day. How very (sad) and strange. Have any of you had days like this?

Michelle

Well, I was ready to fly back from a meeting in Nashville, Tennessee (about 1,500 miles away) when I was awakened by a phone call that the previous evening an attempt had been made (at knifepoint) to sexually assault a 10 year old boy in the Library. That didn't make the return flight home very relaxing at all!

My goodness, Michelle. Like everyone, I've had bad weeks, months and years - or, at least, they seem that way in retrospect. I'd be surprised if anyone could top a single day like that. In my experience you cope in the moment because you have to and the shock comes later. I hope you are OK.

Have you found yourself laughing a strange maniacal laugh at any point?

If not I recommend it. It probably won't make you feel any better but at least it's something to do ;-)

I found out last week that a registered sex offender is in the apartment below me. My instincts had told me that the critter was a scary one, but since I live with my neice & her 23 month old daughter, whom I care for daily, it is rather unnerving.

LilyFestre, the first thing you mentioned made me wonder whether your bosses had really thought things through. Supposing while checking your closets for people as you were asked, you actually HAD found a burglar. What were you supposed to do? Sounds very risky to me! Doesn't bear thinking about really.

As for the convicted sex offender, I thought they weren't allowed to live within a certain distance of places like schools - I think that's the case here in Oz - maybe it's different where you are.

I can't think of the details of one right now, but I have had weird days like that - not recently though. I'll give it some thought, but I've probably done a good job of trying to forget them. 'Surreal' is the right word - they can be very unsettling. I hope you're all right now. I'll look for another post from you on the "Today Is A Good Day Because...... " thread, then I'll know you're all right.

Jenny

The last week or so has felt really strange, from a horrible national news standpoint. Three school shootings, Colorado, Wisconsin, and as if those weren't bad enough, now the one in Pennsylvania. The Wisconsin story, if the national media follows it, sounds like it will reveal some nasty bullying and torment on the part of fellow students, pushing one student beyond the breaking point. But the other two, men choosing to round up and hurt and kill girls--what wavelength are these wacko's tuning it?

There really are some days when it would have been better to have stayed in bed.

Hope it all sorts itself.

I'm ok! A bit unsettled but what can you do? Nothing really. As for the sex offender, I thought there was a limit too as to how far away they must live from a school but apparently that isn't the case. All the teachers have a photo of this guy and we've had a meeting about the situation, what to watch for and what to do. Regarding people in the closet, I think that if there was a concern, the police should have been called....and long before the children were in the building.

I suspect the living within range limits depend on the type of sexual offence. If the offender was convicted of shagging a goat, then presumably a farm is not recommended. Similarly, if he's into little old ladies, a school isn't going to excite him that much.

Back in my day and in my school nearly all the teachers were in the closet.

Last year when I asked to observe my child in Kindegarden, since it was his very first classroom situation,
I was denied
When I insisted they called the beefiest teacher and principal to question me about where my wife was etc.

In todays climate you better be a woman if you want to see your child in school.

The man in question is a convicted child molestor, Class 1. His house is catty corner to the place where all the children who walk to school must pass by.

Donuel,

If you want to observe your child in school, I wonder if you need clearances? I had to have clearances to do any type of observations.    Also, there is always the concern of separated parents...some children have been taken in just that manner...the parent without custody comes in and "kidnaps" the child. Kudos to your school for trying to keep the children safe. It probably wasn't want you wanted but the children are the number one priority. I don't know about other schools but for my area, parents were allowed to walk their kindergarten children to the classroom for the first week, allowed to linger for the first day or two (just for a little while) and now parents are not permitted to walk their child to class...it's all about safety.

That is more than a weird day, it's downright occult.

Were the people in the closets, if any, related to your poor, late colleague?

weird experience..

i was sat on the downstairs toilet at home having a good clearout

when there was a sudden strange sensation of changing air pressure

and a feeling of an almost unperceptable very low subsonic wave vibrating through my body..

..accompanied by a quiet but somehow very powerfull dull thud passing through from outside the house..

perplexing..!!??

i later found out on the news

that what I'd mysteriously experienced

was the detonation of the devastating London Canary Wharf terrorist bomb

some 3 or 4 miles away from my house..

..and another time i walked through a London railway station
only a few hours before a bomb exploded on one of the platforms..

.. now i remember why i moved back home to the west country

John said he had a weird day the other day. He was sitting in the lounge room watching TV. I was out, so he was alone. Where he sits he can see part way up the hall. He thought he saw a movement in the hall. No sooner had he looked away, than he thought he saw it again. It seemed to be coming regularly and he realised the impression of movement was created by a flash of light. So he watched closely and the next time it happened he walked up the hall to see where the flash of light was coming from. It turned out to be a glass mobile I had hanging near the bathroom window which was spinning round in the wind and catching the sunlight. The sun has been changing its angle noticeably lately and this is now happening for a short time each day when it is sunny.

So mystery solved, but he said for a while it had him worried, thinking someone else was in the house.

Like I said, sometimes it's good to stay in bed... if I'd not been such a lazy cow, I'd've likely been on one of the trains blown up in July last year.

I heard that Canary Wharf explosion too... I was sitting in the window seat at home when the glass wobbled and there was a muffled 'whumphf'... and I was 4-5 miles from the seat of the explosion!
