With no input from me, the state of Florida has decided to use the license plate on may van to encourage people to visit "MYFLORIDA.COM". If I want information about making a house more resistant to hurricane damage, my local public radio station suggests I visit "MYSAFEFLORIDA.COM". I drove past a billboard yesterday advertising a radio station that calls itself "MY 107.3". If I visit Yahoo, I can sign up for something called "My Yahoo". If I want to perform certain functions on this computer I access them by clicking something called "My Computer".

Where'd all this "My" stuff come from? Who decided to call everything "My Whatever"? What if I don't really want to have anything to do with some of these things? Are they still mine? If they're all mine, where are yours? What if I'm a Communist and don't believe in private property?

You're shit out of luck then, BWL. It's a "me" and "mine" kind of world out there. That's because Americans are the center of the entire universe, of course, and we're each taught that we're the most important person in our world.

Not many philosophers are being listened to these days, in other words. Just boosters.

Selfish world, ain't it? But everything seems to need a "hook" these days to make it worth remembering, attractive, marketable, or whatever.

My opinion.

Peace, Mooh.

I ME MINE
George Harrison

All thru' the day I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
All thru' the night I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
Now they're frightened of leaving it
Ev'ryone's weaving it,
Coming on strong all the time,
All thru' the day I me mine.

I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine,
I-I-me-me mine.

All I can hear I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
Even those tears I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
No-one's frightened of playing it
Ev'ryone's saying it,
Flowing more freely than wine,
All thru' the day I me mine.

My Computer
My Music
My Pictures
My Aunt Fanny's Great Big—!   Well, let's not go there.

It reminds me of a commercial I used to see from time to time on the idiot box. It was aimed at little girls, and I think it was geared to appeal to the Barbie Doll set. It was for what appeared to be an equestrian version of the Barbie Doll called "My Little Pony."

I know there's a way of hacking into Windows XP and changing "My Computer" and such to simply "Computer." I wish I knew how to do it. Anybody know?

Bill D, you're probably correct. After a while, though, you get tired of having to go bail out anything you forgot to give a designated folder that ends up in the ubiquitous "My Documents." I do have lots of folders in there, though. I hope they serve to confuse spyware.

SRS...it is possible to move the whole lot, and then to set different designated defaults....but I suppose I might be overly paranoid. If you don't GET malicious programs, you're probably safe enough.

It may just be that I have this grumpy resistance to being told where I should keep things and how to label them...*grin*. (I even have programs that will change the little yellow folders icons to tiny pictures...like musical notes, or monkey faces!)

Oooh, don't ever keep any valuable documents in the "My Documents" folder. Microslop won't let you back up that folder. It gives a message that "it contains a system file that is in use" and it doesn't tell you what it is.

Just highlight "My Computer" on XP's Start menu, right click and choose "rename". I just changed mine to "Bubba". No particular reason. Just because I could.

"What if I'm a Communist and don't believe in private property?"

Wait a minute...I think you would have a hard time finding ANY Communist who didn't consider certain items as being his or her own personal property, Bee-dubya. They place less emphasis on private ownership as an organizing principle in society, but they certainly don't eliminate it entirely.

The people I've seen who are closest to dispensing with all private property are certain ascetic Buddhists, who may own little else than 2 changes of clothing, one or two spiritual texts, a toothbrush, and a few items which make it possible to prepare their meals and eat them.

Communists and capitalists are both intensely materialistic...but they have different hierarchical ways of organizing their materialism.

As long as you have "your" life you will have "my's" in your life, including your life (Communist or not!) Here are some "my's":

My opinion
My love
My heart
My vote
My right
My darling
My sacrifice
My debt
My gift
My family

You get the idea, First person possessive. That doesn't mean that Second and Third persons aren't valid. Just different, different conditions and values apply. As for "My Computer" apparently Mr. Gates and company didn't know your name when he designed the OS. There is the "Rename" command In Basic, MSDOS and in the OS itself

1. Highlight but don't open the icon you want to rename.
2. Right click.
3. Choose "Rename."
4. Delete the old name in the box and type in the new one.
5. Click and leave your work for others to see.

You can do the same thing with folders. Just be aware that if a program is looking for a certain folder and you've renamed it the program won't work.

I've done things like renamed ie.exe to "poopsy.exe" when I didn't want the public to access Internet Explore.

Don Firth -

This is one thing on which I've inadvertently reached agreement with Bill D. I simply don't use the "My Whichamawhatever" folders.

I simply made a new folder on my main drive called "Doc" and all my stuff goes there. A main purpose is so that I know where all the non-program stuff is for backup purposes.

One of the problems with the "My Stuff" folders is that quite often the computer puts shortcuts to things there, so that it looks like a file you want is there but the actual file is "somewhere else." If you copy from the "MyMy" folders to a backup, you sometimes only get the shortcut, and not the actual file you wanted. When I put a file in the directory tree I created under my "Doc" folder, I know it's where I put it.

I guess I'm just too old fashioned to be "cute" like Mickey thinks I want to be. I think it's another thing they tried to steal from Macs(?).

John
