From: GUEST,Kenny

D            G       D
By the clear and the winding streams,
       G               A
In the valley of Strathmore,
         D       G      D
Where my love and I have been,
            G            A
Where we'll wander never more,
       Bm         A7             G
But If time was a thing man could buy,
                            A
All the money that I have in store,
    D            G          D
I'd give for one day by her side,
       G               A
In the valley of Strathmore.

The above are the chords and lyrics to the first verse and chorus taken directly from "The Andy M. Stewart Song Book" - pg8.
There are a few differences to what "Skarpi" has above.

Other minor corrections from the DT version above I've put in capitals below :

By the clear and the winding streams
In the valley of Strathmore
Where my love and I have been
Where we'll wander never more

But if time was a thing man could buy
All the money that I have in store
I'D give for one day by her side
    In the valley of Strathmore

From the glen of the golden and green
I left for a land far away
Where sadness has never been seen
Aye, and joy only costs a day's pay

In Strathmore there's a long working day
For a man with his hands on the PLOO
But it's work I'd be happy TAE DAE
If at night I were LYIN' WI' you

As I take a long DRAUGHT from my glass
Oh, I'm drinking alone here again
And I try not to think O' my lass
For the old days will ne'er come again

I just started to take this song into my singing plan and I ended up with these chords ,

C                  F       C
By the clear and winding stream,
          F               G7
In the valley of Strathmore,
C                F       C
Where my love and I did meet,
         F                G7
Where I'll wander ever more,
          Am          G               F
But If time were a thing man could buy,
          Dm                   G7
All the money that I have in store,
          C          F          C
I would pay for one day by your side,
          F             G7
In the valley of Strathmore.

all the best Skarpi Iceland .

Here's a recording of the song by Silly Wizard:

...and by Karen Matheson and Sorren MacLean:

I notice that there is no attribution for this song in the Digital Tradition. I was written by Andy M. Stewart.

Here are the lyrics from the DT. Any corrections?

VALLEY OF STRATHMORE
(Andy M. Stewart)

By the clear and the winding streams
In the valley of Strathmore
Where my love and I have been
Where we'll wander never more

But if time was a thing man could buy
All the money that I have in store
I would give for one day by her side

Strathmore, by the way, is just north of Dundee and not far from Forfar, the Bridie capital of the world...

Here's a link to the lyrics on the Cantaria website: Valley of Strathmore. From there, there's a link to a free download of Andy M Stewart's beautiful rendition of his own song from mp3.com.

Andy is one of the gifted who can write songs that sound like traditional ones. It's not an easy thing to do - I tried!

Cheers,

And the funny thing about the Cape Breton version...... The one who sings it, mainly, is an old-time Blues/Rocker - Matt Minglewood! And he does a great job of it.

It seems to be purely the work of Andy M.

Cape Bretoners have co-opted the song and tune, changing only one word, from Strathmore to Strathlorne as we have a place of that name. Works well as the original

Anyone know this beautiful song? Andy M. Stewart is cedited with the words and music. It has such a beautiful haunting melody to it and stirs up emotions in me and feelings I've had for my homeland at times. Does this song have any other folk origins or purely the work of Andy. Den

Bev - I love my copy of Rise Up Singing (often referred to around here as RUS) -- but -- it has a *lot* of typos and confused or mis-heard words. I make it a habit to cross-check it with the DT or other sources whenever possible. It has chords, though, and a nice list of recorded sources for each song, often with some history as well.

Bev,

Look online for Sing Out! and order it from them. I think the book is indispensible as a resource for folk music.

Thanks Don. After posting this I checked CDNOW and found reference to Silly Wizard and this song. I actually have a part recording of this from UK radio approx 15 years ago - just spinning the dial and found the song playing - never did know who sang it!! Other than the sessions mentioned earlier I have never heard anyone else singing it. The song book you mention "Rise up Singing" can give me more info? Source? Many Thanks once again.

Does anyone have the music/chords to this song? I have the words from the DT and a distant memory of the tune from sessions in Dundee and Edinburgh. ABC format would be good. Many thanks Bev Lawton
