Haven't sung it for many years but here goes:

CHORUS: Hessle Road, Hessle Road, I am proud of Hessle Road.
When folks ask where I come from, my head it is not bowed.
I say I come from good old Hessle Road.

I miss the bonfires in the street. I even miss the bullies,
Sat'day trips round Boyeses and the prams outside of Woolie's.
I miss those bobbers' clogs at two, that very fishy smell,
Langham and Eureka and Picky Park as well.

I miss those little gardens with sooty coloured roses,
Little kids with wellies on, with yellow snotty noses.
I miss those shotgun weddings, those little corner shops,
Playing football in the street and getting chased by cops.

I miss those brave young fisher kids, coming home to shore,
Spending all their money, then going back for more.
I even miss Criterion—a very quiet pub—
And a little lass from Subway Street our kid put in the club.

I miss Sat'days at the Boulevard. we always used to win,
With the Drake twins, Tommy Harris, Mick Scott and Tommy Finn,
Loose forward Johnny Whiteley—the finest in the land—
And the best-behaved supporters, they were there on Threepenny Stand.

There was Havelock and Gillett Street, West Dock and Boulevard.
They're pulling them all down now. It's hitting people hard.
They've left it all behind them, and on to Bransholme strode,
But I bet they don't forget the laughs and tears on Hessle Road.

I was a steward in a ship and it was rather posh,
People sipping cocktails and eating fancy nosh.
One bloke said "I'm from Eton" and I said, "Well, I'm blowed!
Me uncle, 'e's from Harrow." That's a street on Hessle Road.

I remember what me dad said, when I was leaving home
To fend for meself and start a family of my own.
He said, "I brought you up, son, but nowt to me is owed.
Just remember where you come from. You're a kid from Hessle Road."

have fun!!

There you go, Suzi:

HESSLE ROAD
(Keith Marsden)

Going back to walk the old beat, down on Hessle Road.
Going back to see the old street, down on Hessle Road.
Street once loud with braiders' gossip only echoes now with pain.
Soon they'll come with cranes and hammers, knocking down Memory Lane.

Andrew Dock once full of trawlers, down on Hessle Road.
Cutters, snibbies, old side-haulers, down on Hessle Road.
Quayside rang with clogs and hobnails, fishlads' barrows rushing by.
Now there's only desolation left to greet an old man's eye.

On the docks they'd never need you, down on Hessle Road,
Till they'd Cyprus ore to bleed you, down on Hessle Road.
Got the egg through humping timber, then on the beach and out of luck.
Foul-mouthed foreman ruled with curses- bought his beer or lost your book.

Sunk off Iceland once and stranded, down on Hessle Road.
How we pleasured when we landed, back on Hessle Road.
Cruising round the pubs with lasses, three days off with cash to spend.
Every day another pay day, time ashore too soon to end.

Moved out when Sam Allon came, lad, far from Hessle Road.
Bransholme Towers aren't the same, lad, far from Hessle Road.
Still the old road, like a magnet, draws us back from near and far.
Do the shopping Sat'day morning, have a pint in Rayner's bar.

Going back to walk the old beat, down on Hessle Road.
Going back to see the old street, down on Hessle Road.
Street once loud with braiders' gossip only echoes now with pain.
Soon they'll come with cranes and hammers, knocking down Memory Lane.

mmmmmmmm Hessle road, can't say I was enamoured with it, I did look at a flat there once, Princess ave was much better! The stench was something to behold, my big regret was working a stones throw from the Blue Bell and never going! instead I wasted my time in the Gardeners, Heyworth and "little" Queens. I was there 1970 to '72 and couldn't wait to leave. Having said all that I had my wedding suit made by a tailor who made the fishermans gear, he said he had made the trousers to be let out to a 40" waist and the Jacket to 46", surprising really since I was 28" waist and 36" chest, now, of course, I still have the suit and i am contemplating having it "let out" to it's maximum because I am about the size he had anticipated all those years ago, asides apart, I suppose it is about the loss of community and I was never part of it, oh and Clive Sullivan was the Hull star in those days and Millward and Lowe their nemesis.

John Conolly & Pete Summer sing HESSLE ROAD on their album "Trawlerton: The Singing of the Fishing," Fellside CD 135, 2005.

Allmusic.com has this information, but it doesn't say who wrote it, and it doesn't have a sound sample.

Wauw, Glad I found this lyrics. I was an exchange student at Hull University in Spring of 1994 and I remember at that time a troupe called the 'Remould Theatre Company' had a theatre piece about the life of the fishermen. There was a cassette recording with it with many of the original interviews and some of the songs they did in the piece and Hessle Road was featured pretty prominently in there. I believe they used the pennywhistle intro to the song on several occasions to fade in and out of the different narratives. Of course by the time I lived in Hull, Hessle Road was no more then a busy motorway flanked with supermarkets and movie theatres.

Still glad I found the text.

Here we go again!

Motorway? Movie Theatres?

The original Hessle Road is still there - Keith Marsden's song gives a more accurate discription of were we are now.

There were reputedly 1000 children living down Bean Street alone back in the 1950s and 1960s.

Then along came progress and high rise ghettos.
