For those of you who understand, please send up whatever your flavour of good thoughts, etc. for my grandson's puppy, Numa Jean. She is a brindle boxer about 5-6 months old and climbed a 6 foot fence sometime between 730a-noon, today. It is raining very heavily, here, and is very chilly. Numa's litter mate and sister, Blondie, did not follow her, thank goodness. Nevertheless, Numa was the first puppy they got and is very special. They both put my grandson to bed, sleep with him, and wake him up in the morning. They are both adorable pups and really learning their manners.:-)

My son is walking the neighbourhood, now. I've called all relevant agencies, printed up flyers with pictures, etc. Now, we need your help in seeing her returned to us, right away, please. Numa Jean come home!

Hi Kat,

    Do you have a public television station? Many of them have a channel for community events that will also list photos/descriptions of lost animals and where you can be contacted, for free. The local radio here also runs a Lost and Found (daily) that lists animals and contact info...just a thought.
   I hope you find your puppy.

Thanks, both of you. I did get hold of one radio station, the others' phones are constantly busy, so I am doing a lot of redial. I'll check with the community tv channel, thanks. The radio woman said she'd say she needed meds as that usually gets immediate results, esp. when they are young and cute. I've also called the vet, the animal control folks, and the humane society. My daughter is also walking the neighbourhood with Blondie. I don't want to give voice to my fears, so am trying to focus on her calling and saying she's been found before my grandson wakes from his nap.

I put in the Invisible Fence system to keep my dogs in the yard. It works beautifully, but it is expensive and it takes a couple of weeks of training. Still, well worth the price, all things considered.

Please please please keep collars and tags on them at all times! I'm amazed at how many people only put collars on for walks, or leave loose chain collars on that will easily slide over the dog's head. Dogs need visible ID!



Something you might consider in the future:

Mine has both a microchip and always wears a collar and tags. She hasn't gotten out of our yard in years until this past week, when we lost a board in the corner of the fence. One of her tags has her AVID number (the ID number programmed into her chip) and the AVID phone number on it so even if whoever finds her doesn't have a chip reader, they can call AVID, who will call us (so we don't have to have our own phone number out in public).

Mom got a call from AVID at 8:00 Tuesday morning saying that someone down the block had found our dog. It turns out it was an elderly woman who couldn't have taken the dog to a vet herself but could call AVID anyway because of the tag.



The other advantage to a microchip is that if someone finds your dog and wants to keep it, they won't know she has a chip unless they get her scanned. We had two clients fighting over a dog once (a boxer, as a matter of fact) so we whipped out the microchip scanner an, lo and behold, the chip was still registered to the original owner. The second "owner" had found the dog and taken the collar off.

I agree on the microchips, folks, thanks, so does my daughter. Yes, she always has a collar on with her license, rabies tag and a tag with owner name, addy and phone number on it. She was sighted by a couple of people near some shops, but nobody tried to get her; ditto for a grumpy old neighbour. I've placed ads, radio notices, gone to animal control and printed up flyers. Tomorrow, we will hand those out and canvas the neighbourhood, again. My daughter got completely soaked walking for about three hours with Numa's sister, around the area. We''re hoping some kid may have picked her up and we'll hear from them when mom or dad gets home from work. There are a lot of people who have seen them in the front yard when my dau. is out with them and openly admired them, so a lot of folks know where she lives. Here's hoping. The best of luck to you and yours, kat. I once had a cute pup that got stolen right out of my yard. It was weeks before we discovered him romping in a fenced back yard with some kids about a half mile away. Upon discreet questioning of the kids I decided that the affection between them was mutual and that the pup had a good home. I never did find out who actually picked him up. A man in a pickup had been sighted in our rental compound- and then the pooch was gone.

May you have better luck. I hope you get a call tonight. A disconsolate child is a heartbreaker.

Sorry, kat. this is a tough one.
A few months back, Jacqui and I were stopped for construction when a silly "escaped" boxer darted in and out of oncoming traffic and climbed on cars begging to be let in until I opened my door and called him. Jacqui was really upset - something about lobsters in the back seat. But his frantic owner appeared just as the light changed and he was returned safe and sound. He had dug UNDER the fence.
Someone will take pity on your little one. I will keep that thought in mind.

oh kat - I can well imagine how you feel. Much as I adore all dogs, boxers have a special place in my heart - I grew up with them (in fact, when I was born, our boxer licked me within ten minutes!!!).

I still grieve for our old girl who died last November. It's my opinion dogs are born to break at least one heart apiece.

And, barn doors shut too late and all, but I hate seeing dogs outdoors on their own - they are strong and clever and curious, and tend to get out of the most safe-looking enclosures.

I don't like them being outside alone, either, though this yard is very private and safe from anyone stealing them. This neighbourhood is full of dog lovers. No luck, yet. We put up 40 flyers this morning. I have printed up another 25 which we will put up later, today.

Someone did see her running with a husky last night. They caught the husky but she wouldn't let them catch her, which is good in a way...it might mean any arseholes who want to steal her won't be able to. The place where she was seen is close and safer than the big road by the shops.

It turns out the old man, across from the backyard, saw them both get out. Got Blondie back in. Numa wouldn't go, so he fixed the fence to keep Blondie in, effectively shutting Numa off from getting back in. I know he was doing his best, but...jeez. Numa hates rain, so she probably holed up somewhere for the night. No sign of her and we are almost hoarse from calling.

Dave, my dau. did walk all over two neighbourhoods last night with Blondie, thanks. She will do that again this afternoon when she puts up the additional flyers.

There are a lot of really nice people out there watching for her. They were all so nice. Makes me have hope.

She may also just be enjoying a wild run, and will come home when she's good and hungry. I once looked after a friend's male dog who loved a good overnight run, and was a mighty escape artist. He could disappear behind a single blueberry bush, despite being a sixty pound Shepherd. I recall one evening searching along the road, calling and calling, and I could see the great lout hiding in the edge of the woods, watching me. He once jumped through a shut glass small window on the second floor of a shed he'd been locked into (having previously chewed through the door of his kennel). He landed, a good ten foot drop, on his feet, took off, and was home none the worse for wear next morning.

Which is to say, take heart and keep looking. She'll be found.

I dunno how it is where Numa Jean lives.

Where we live, we would:

Call the county animal warden (gummint job)
Call the ASPCA (nonprofit job)
Call the local veterinarians

And take the above places a L&F flyer with picture, to post on their Lost & Found board.

Also:
Put L&F announcement in the local paper and the local ad paper
Put up L&F flyers in the stores
Put up a L&F poster at the local feed/pet supply stores

Susan, thanks, we've done all of that and a bit more. The ads come out tomorrow as we missed the deadline for the weekend. Best case scenario, she comes walking home on her own; next, she lost her collar and someone is waiting to see an ad/poster for her.

Dogs can travel quite a distance in a fairly short time. Makes it hard to find them if you have a traveler. The neighbor meant well--you have at least one of the dogs. I'm sorry he wasn't able to catch both of them. Before I put in the invisible fence my neighbors put my dog in their back yard a couple of times (or she went in there herself--but she couldn't get back out again).

Darn papers! I have receipts from placing the ads online, which say the ads would be published TODAY. Now, I find they will not be in until tomorrow as there was a "glitch" in their online placement system.

Painted a long, wide piece of subflooring, a scrap, with a lost puppy notice and attached it to our fence. I hope someone comes by, maybe having been gone all weekend, and finds her and calls.

Patient gratitude that she is home today or happy in whatever circumstance she has landed herself.

I do know that wherever she is, she's fine. I know she is missed, but isn't this a wonderful ole world? It might be helpful to draw some pictures of Numa Jean in various good situations-- even the good side of the worst situations her little boy might be imagining.

There is ALWAYS a good side, and kids are usually better at finding these than we old fools are! :~)

Thanks, folks. I wish I had something to report. One newspaper ad came out, today. No calls so far. The other paper had to add another day for processing the photo. Jeez! Morgan and I drove the neighborhood late in the afternoon, yesterday, and handed out a few more flyers to road workers and house builders as well as a local feedstore and Taco Bell.

Don't forget that her littermate can reach her better than anyone-- is she going along on all of the walks to woof, sniff, and attract? Even from a car, she can be a big help, but by laying down a familiar scent trail she can leave clear instructions!

It *feels* as though she is okay and someone has maybe decided they want to keep her. I am hoping they will be *shamed* into calling us or just put her in the front yard.

I lost my cat down the drains when I left her with someone she knew. She was elderly, cold, hungry, thirsty, alone, frightened, lost and in darkness. I had been walking all the streets around calling her. One time as I pulled up on arriving to search again she recognised the sound of my car, and I heard the faintest cry when I cut the engine. It took me three days to lure her out.

Don't give up hope.

Just got our first phone call with a definite siting!! I am headed over there, now. She was seen two days ago running with a big brown dog with a black tongue, must be part chow. She loves other dogs so that seems accurate. The woman saw her picture in the paper and said it is definitely her!!

Despite us having a scure and locked wrought iron fence, my recently departed Puppers The Alsatian managed to have himself a few big adventures during his 8 years on Earth. One of last times he got out, he figured out that if he ran around the yard 6 times in a figure eight, he could build up enough speed to just sail over the fence by an inch. I had just stepped in the house to go take something out of the oven, came back and saw no dog! He thought he was in the all clear and was trotting up the street to visit his girlfriend Stella the loodhound when he was confronted by our mail carrier who snagged him by the collar and brought him home!

Sometimes, Fences, locks, ID. Tags, Microchips, collars and a chain collar can be gotten around. ANother time he slipped out of the yard when my husband foolishly let him walk down the driveway with him to put back trash cans while neglecting to close the gate behind him. In a flash, Puppers was down the drivway and off on an adventure. I got close enough to grab his collar and in a deft maneuver, he managed to wiggle out of it. The two of us and 12 neighors chased him around for almost 2 hours. he loved every minute of it too, letting us get just close enough to touch him and then running away.

Finally, an elder we know from the local Kingdom Hall very near us happened to be driving by. He stopped, got out and commanded the dog to sit down. Puppers obeyed as if Georgio was Moses coming down from the mount with the ten commandments! Georgio, the elder, came over, picked up the dog, put him in the backseat of his car and drove him home. Georgio's congregation still laughs about that to this day and teases him. My dog was funny that way. He obeyed Jehovah's Witnesses and Firemen - 2 things we have plenty of in our neighorhood. LOL.

Well, You've clearly done everything good pet parents are supposed to do. I'm sure you've already thought of offering a reward too. All my pets have 'Reward for safe return' stamped on their secondary tags.

It's good that she's been sighted with other dogs. They are no dout helping her out by showing her where the good garbage is! That should help you catch her. I too hope she's been spayed.

Pleasem keep us posted on Numa sightings. We worry aout her.

Thanks, Dave's Wife and everyone else. Great story. We had a half German Shepherd, half Dobie who was like that. Out and off in a thrice laughing as we scurried along to catch him.

She was just to the vet a few weeks ago and he told us she was too young to spay just yet, so maybe she isn't quite six months. At any rate, she was the runt and is smaller than her sister. Her sister is not in heat, so I think we are safe that way.

Rue took off the whole afternoon and walked all over in the area she was seen and then some, with Blondie in tow. She put up about another thirty flyers and spoke to everyone she saw. My brother lives right on the canal bank in the same area and will keep a sharp eye out for her, too, now that we know where she is hanging. There are plenty of places which she can get shelter and also probably food. Plus she loves grasshoppers and other bugs to eat. Did I say the area is near my grandson's daycare? We're wondering if she is confused at smelling the car scent from when we drive over there twice a day. Not sure about that, though.

I think I said, Fri. the 13th is always lucky for me, so here's to finding her, tomorrow!

As the owner of an escape artist myself I can sympathize with all of the efforts to keep them in. It is a big help if you take them for a good long walk every day--that is their work, they look forward to it, and you wear them out enough that they're less descrutive and less likely to try to escape.

Our escape artist is a big dog, so after trying all else, we went to the ag store for a hotwire.

"Do you want cow-strength or pet-strength?"

"We want him to get religion, but we don't want to send him to Heaven!"

So they gave us the dogwire to try, and it has worked just fine. One light zap was enough to convice him that fences were not for climbing.

Stilly River Sage ahs the right idea. We started taking Puppers to Runyon Canyon park (where he fell in love with Famke Jansson's dog Licorice as you may recall) when he was 6 months old so we could tire him out enough to keep him from coming up with new ways to escape. Sometimes on weekends, my husband would take him twice and hike the hill 2 times each just to get him exhausted enough to settle down at night. Big dogs need exercise or they get crafty and figure out how to escape or they decide to take a more creative route and dig a hole to the earth's core.

We took EVERY precaution a reasonable person would and yet Puppers would still find the chink in our armour. Dogs are good that. MY friend Bill had a mixed breed terrier/spaniel named Cassidy who simply LIVED to find new ways out of the yard. He dug tunnels, he chews planks, he climbed trees - he was such a naughty boy. oddly enough, when we had a very large earthquake and his two dog pals Sundance and Buster made a reak for it, Cassidy stayed home! Bill was in oregon and called us in a panic saying he had heard from a neighor that the other two had gotten out. Sundance was a Shephers/St.bernard mix and I think buster was a boxer. We had to go over to their house in the hills and search for them. I found Sundance but Buster stayed lost for days.

In looking up the legality of hotwires in other than rural places I came across what looks to me to e an ingenius solution for smaller fence climers - it's called a Coyote roller. It's kinda like putting tubes on cable or phone wires to keep the squirrels off! Check it out:

Since we have a coyote in our neighborhood right now eating random outdoor cats, this looks like something I need to show to the Neighborhood Watch captain over on the affected street. it keeps wild animals out of your yard but also looks like it would keep climbing fido IN.

He was a rescue dog - a border collie - too nervy and soft for a world where he'd have to work for his living. He goes to work with my husband, who works at an agricultural college and spends the day with the trainee veterinary nurses. They take his pulse, clean his teeth, generally check him out - as far as the college's risjk assessment goes, my boy is 'low risk' for the students. He just loves the attention!!!

That coyote roller is good for dogs that go over the top, but what my pit bull was doing was testing the top edge of the wire cloth part and finding where there weren't enough wire loops to hold it onto the top bar. She was pushing against the cloth for a flexible place where it would sag a little and scooting over it but under the top bar. I went around the yard adding more clips to the top bar and cloth and still she got out. Other times she went under the fence, and on one occasion she scooted between a chunk of wrought iron fencing that I had wired against the cyclone fencing to block a hole. She wiggled through and did a sharp left turn at the hole and she was OUT. The Invisible Fence with its training and correction collars is perfect for this dog--she doesn't approach the fence.

Electric fences are not allowed in my town in any way, shape or form. Borders or inside the yard.

Don't give up hope. I've never lost a dog, but I've had cats go AWOL for weeks. One was a very weak and sick young thing someone stupidly let out while I was at work. He was just back from a week at the vet on IV, very thin. I had also just moved to a new house. The old house was about 3 km. away in a maze of busy streets. I called the new people at the old place, just in case he made it there, but three weeks later I was mourning. And they called me. They had a skinny little cat trapped in the porch. Off I went, and collected a scraggy bag of bones who spent the next month on my lap getting fed nutrient pastes. He lived to be 17.

Still holding out for Numa to find her way home!

I was going around my gardens today noting areas I will have to puppy-proof if I want a new doggie (my old one passed way 9/12/06 rembemer the doggie sunshine song?) As much as I think I am good at predicting the ways a future dog might get out, I know there will always be other ways they will think of. I don't think I can get the GPS thing in my area ut I'll look into. Kinda like Lo-Jack for dogs! We will chip our dog of course and have them tattooed with an ID #. Rendundacy is key. Tags can be removed and chips being internal.. well...

I am so hoping Numa is still with that other dog who seems to know his way around. of course, the longer she is gone, the more likely it is that she will marry him and have puppies with him. ;-) is there room for her Handsome Dan Husky in your household Kat? Who knows, maybe Dan came around and courted her, motivating her to jump the fence? My Puppers, although neutered, would head straight to Stella's house down the street whenever he got out. He got her out twice! Puppy love!

So far her sister still has not gone into heat, so...anyway, I rewrote the ad, making it MORE pathetic and used an updated picture which we found, so...the first one came out today, another on Tuesday and the other pub. will come out on Wed. They all get a lot of circulation and we have already had one call of a sighting on Oct. 8th. Kind of a long time ago, but at least we know folks are watching out and responding. Hope we get more calls with more recent info. mY dau. is getting disheartened going to the humane society etc. with no luck. I think the updated picture will help a lot.

My grandson's third b-day is coming up so the ad is written from Numa's perspective asking folks to help her get back to him in time for his b-day.

We were fortunate with our old dog, she took off only once, followed some smelt fishermens' children down onto the ice when she was about five months old. A very nice woman called my dau. saying she is sure, by the new picture, that she has had Numa Jean for the past week, after having picked her up in our area. She felt she was too nice of a dog to take to the pound. She is also moving in a couple of weeks. She and my dau. made arrangements to meet at a local store parking lot. Her number did not show up on caller id and my dau. didn't get it, although she knows the woman lives near the golf course and drives a cherry-red Mercedes or BMW. The woman is over an hour late for the meeting and we are sitting on pins and needles. She was very sure it was Numa!

Nothing so far, but my dau. does think she remembers the woman's husband's name and knows that he has a "practice" here in town, so may have found a number for him, IF it's the right guy. She said it didn't feel right to call last night. The whole thing has made her uneasy plus she and my grandson have bronchitis, so not feeling up to par. She laid it on a bit thick, BUT I don't blame her. Here's the text added on: "To the lady who called from the Ridges in the Redlands, near the golf course and positively identified my son's boxer puppy, please call back. I waited two hours & my son cried all night because we never connected." (He didn't cry quite all night.)

Trying to follow my own advice: "give thanks for this or something better for the highest good of all concerned and let it go.":-(

I have followed this sad story from the start - I grew up with boxers, as a baby I toddled along holding onto one for support! So I sort of went where he went- and was often found asleep in his basket.

I am lucky that I see a friendly pup who lives close by (well more of an adolescent really but that could describe most boxers!!)

kat, the thought occurs to me that to some people 'puppy' may be misleading. Some people might not think of calling a five-month old canine a puppy, but a young dog. A puppy to them would bring to mind a falling over, floppy midge of a thing, and they would not be on the lookout for something older.

Has your daughter or her husband tried walking with Blondie (firmly attached by at least two leashes) in the area where there are the most sightings? It might be that Numa Jean would come out of hiding if she heard her sister - or that Blondie could recognize Numa's bark and lead them to her, if someone else is keeping her.

I called animal control about the weird no-show. They said it was 1) rare to hear of suhc a thing happening and 2) a matter for the police but not much they could do without a full name and/or address/phone number. My dau. is mad at herself, too, for not thiking clearly enough to get those.

Kat - I'm surprised at the reaction of Animal Control because they ARE the police when it comes to animals.

I'm on very friendly terms with the officers who cover my area and I know they would take seriously a complaint from a citizen who has lost a dog and has had a call and promise of return that didn't pan out. It's true that dogs are considered property and that any eventual police complaint would be handled y your local law enforcement but Animal Control officers can get invloved before that complaint is made.

The reason you would cite to get AC motivated to make a visit would be you suspect maltreatment and that the person who claims to be holding Numa made a promise of return which they renegged on. The Ad clearly stated that Numa is on meds so the woman should know that by holding her she is, in effect, mistreating the dog. Of course, you prolly don't want to take it to that extreme. Still, who would it hurt for the Animal cops to ask around her neighborhood and knock on a few doors?

When My dog Puppers came down with epilepsy, a neighor who saw us restraining him during a grand mal seizure didn't understand the situation and called Animal Control to say we were beating our dog. They wasted no time coming around my street, chatting up the neighors and asking if we were monsters who would beat our dog. The other neighors were horrified y the suggestion but told AC when we usually walked him and when he would e out in the yard. They waited until they knew my husand wouldn't be home and came over to demand access to Puppers.

Long story short, we had a wonderful visit with the animal cops who played with Puppers and gave him a good once over with his fave brush so they could look for injuries. I gave them copies of the Seizure Logs I kept to track how often and what type of seizures he had, his medical chart and his Vet's name and numer. In addition, I had to get a notarized letter from his Vet praising us as responsible owners and detailing all the treatment he'd recieved. I'm not angry about having to do that mind you, I'm just saying all they got was a vague complaint and they came down on us like a ton of bricks.

Since then, I've gotten to know them well by sending them follow-up reports on Puppers progress for the file (to avoid future misunderstandings) and to get their help with a series of viscious strays in our neighorhood. We even had a situation where one person tried to keep a dog he found "running loose" (dog escaped yard after breaking thru a window to get at a female in heat) and AC helped the original owner get the dog back.

It could be that where you are, you have insufficient staffing to go out on a call like this. Where we live, we have plenty of staffing but the officers are dispatched from a location about an hours drive away during business hours. We have to be patient when asking for assistance with vicious dogs, often cornering them ourself and barricading them in an alley until the AC arrives.

I'm so heartsick for you Kat. Do you think that lady was expecting to be offered a reward and when none was discussed she decided to low it off? We continue to pray and hope for Nuam's safety and her eventual safe return home to her family.

Please keep me in your thoughts too because we are going to a Rescue saturday to maybe adopt a new doggie. Here's his pic:

We believe he is a Red Siberian Husky and German Shepherd mix. I wasn't sure we'd want to adopt so soon ut I saw his picture and realized that a 7 yr old might be perfect for us. He's the same age Puppers was when he died ut if all turns out well, we can enjoy his remaining years with him; the ones we didn't get with Puppers because of his epilepsy.

Thanks, Dave's Wife. He is a beaut! I took in an ancient Siamese one time. She lasted for two weeks. Those were two weeks she was off the streets, well-fed and loved. I was grateful she had come to me.

You are right, we do not have enough staffing here, though when they do come out they are excellent. we had to call because our neighbour's dog died in a yard and it seemed like neglect to us. They took the body, did an autopsy and found it was littered with tumors. I still don't think the dog was treated well enough.

As for getting them involved, we jsut don't have enough info. We will have to go cruise that neighbourhood ourselves, I think, before we try to involve them or the cops.

There are, for the first time since she went missing, two ads for female boxers for sale; one is "4 months and brindle" the other is "1 and 1/2 yrs." I guess either one could be her, but i think the 4 month old is more likely, so I have left a message of interest on their phone. Some nice guy called to make sure i had seen the ad for the 1 and 1/2 yr. old.

Today when I was driving with my grandson,near one of the places we looked, he starting calling her, "Numa, Numa, where are you?" Almost broke my heart.

Children need to learn about loss and grieving as much as they need to learn about everything else. I suggest that some of that be addressed now, if it hasn't already. Keep up the search but don't keep this child on pins and needles all the while. Characterize it as you wish--she found a new home, she may have not been so lucky.

Thanks, SRS, we have done that with our own kids for years. He knows that someone "nice' may have her. And, truth to tell, I know he will be okay. He understands he may never see her again. It helps to have Blondie and Nanny Dizzy around.

We are in Samhain and for 24 hours the veil is very thin between the two worlds. Maybe you could ask relatives/friends on the other side to have a look round.
