Subject: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: GUEST,Adrianel Date: 07 Oct 06 - 08:36 PM Dear Mudcats, In college, a friend used to sing a rather pretty song, with the refrain: "Don't pass me by, All the folks just stand and stare, They hear my cry. Oh heart of stone, Don't pass me by." I remember one verse that went: "You say you'd like to know How much I really love you. I'd rather try, before I die, To count the stars, but yet I cry - " Does anyone know any more of this, or of its history/origins? Thanks. |
Subject: Lyr Add: ON THE TURNING AWAY (Pink Floyd) From: Peace Date: 07 Oct 06 - 08:46 PM Pink Floyd - ON THE TURNING AWAY On the turning away From the pale and downtrodden And the words they say Which we won't understand "Don't accept that what's happening Is just a case of others' suffering Or you'll find that you're joining in The turning away" It's a sin that somehow Light is changing to shadow And casting it's shroud Over all we have known Unaware how the ranks have grown Driven on by a heart of stone We could find that we're all alone In the dream of the proud On the wings of the night As the daytime is stirring Where the speechless unite In a silent accord Using words you will find are strange And mesmerized as they light the flame Feel the new wind of change On the wings of the night No more turning away From the weak and the weary No more turning away From the coldness inside Just a world that we all must share It's not enough just to stand and stare Is it only a dream that there'll be No more turning away? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Clinton Hammond Date: 07 Oct 06 - 08:55 PM What does Pink Floyd's "On The Turning Away" have to do with the request? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Peace Date: 07 Oct 06 - 08:56 PM It's age, Mick. Slows a guy down . . . . But now I'm really hoping it's the right song. Thanks, buddy. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Big Mick Date: 07 Oct 06 - 09:08 PM Now that I look at it, I am not sure it is right either. But a great try. I am doing some searching now. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Clinton Hammond Date: 07 Oct 06 - 09:26 PM It's not even close, let alone not right.... I've googled, and not found anything like what's posted... Maybe it was an original? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Oct 06 - 04:23 AM Yeah, there's no "pass me by" or "count the stars" - but it's interesting that there are two songs wiht "heart of stone" and "stand and stare." Hey, any excuse to post a Pink floyd song is good enough for me. I've always liked "On The Turning Away." It's a great song. -Joe- |
Subject: Lyr Add: YOU PASS ME BY (Hank Snow) From: M.Ted Date: 08 Oct 06 - 02:12 PM This doesn't exactly correspond, but it ends with the line, "Oh, Heart of Stone, you pass me by". --Surely Clinton won't object too much to one of Canada's greatest Country and Western singers--There was also "Hearts of Stone" by Jewels, made very famous by the Fontane Sisters--but the lyrics aren't that close- You Pass Me By Hank Snow You pass me by and you don't even stop to say hello Don't know why I've learned to love you so Each night it seems I hear you say your love will never die I wake from dreams you pass me by When you are lonely some day you'll learn Just what it means to live in dreams of love that's unreturned A love so sweet that vanished with the sunshine in the sky Each time we meet you pass me by You pass me by and now I know that my hopes are all in vain Here am I alone on memory lane I hope and pray that the one you love will never make you cry Then turn away and pass me by I keep your memory locked in my heart Forever there to help me bear the lonely tears that start I might have known our love was only meant to be a lie Oh heart of stone you pass me by |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Snuffy Date: 08 Oct 06 - 07:14 PM It's "You Pass Me By", not "Don't Pass Me By". Lonnie Donegan recorded it on his third LP Lonnie Rides Again in 1959 (Pye Nixa LPL18043). The sleeve notes say it was previously recorded by Hank Snow and the credits give the writers as Nesbitt & Snow. If that's not enough to track it down, I can send you an MP3 or burn it to CD and bring it to Banbury at the weekend. |

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU PASS ME BY (Nesbitt; Snow) From: Snuffy Date: 08 Oct 06 - 07:57 PM I didn't want to have to do this, but here goes anyway: YOU PASS ME BY (Nesbitt; Snow) You pass me by, And all the folks all turn and stare, They hear my cry. Oh heart of stone, You pass me by. The folks all know That once we swore Our love would never die But now they see You pass me by It must seem strange to them To see me walking lonely Because they know Where e'er you go 'Tis there I fly and yet You pass me by, And all the folks all turn and stare, They wonder why Oh heart of stone, You pass me by. In dreams I try To see again your two bright smiling eyes I'll wake from dreams You pass me by You say you'd like to know How much I really love you. I'd rather try, before I die, To count the stars, and yet You pass me by, And all the folks all turn and stare, They wonder why Oh heart of stone, You pass me by. [Instrumental break] I fail to gain the riches For our wedding day But I sailed again Across the main And now though late I cry Don't pass me by For all the folks all turn and stare, They wonder why Oh heart of stone, You pass me by. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: GUEST,Adrianel Date: 08 Oct 06 - 09:11 PM Thank you, Snuffy, I think that's close enough. Why do you hate to do it? The tune I have in my head would fit those words. I heard this first several years before Pink Floyd existed, so it's definately not by them. Lonnie Donegan (great and often under-rated man) is another distinct possibility. I too tried googling several lines, both separately and together, and came up with nothing even close, certainly nothing that would fit the notes. Thank you again, guys. Funnily enough, I was in Banbury last month, for my father-in-law's funeral, but I live across the pond. Cheers for now. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: Snuffy Date: 09 Oct 06 - 05:18 AM Adrianel, I hated to have to sit down and transcribe from the recording because it was nearly 1am and I should have been in bed. But if I didn't do it then I wouldn't have got another chance till Thursday evening. The words I posted are from the Lonnie Donegan recording, but there must be recordings by Hank Snow out there somewhere. The version that Mted and peace posted look like they could be an earlier or later re-working of the song by Hank. Sorry about the Banbury thing: I thought you were Adrianl (without the "e"), who does live near Banbury |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heart of Stone From: GUEST,Alan Brookes, San Francisco Date: 20 Apr 07 - 06:30 PM "You Pass Me By" was on the Lonnie Donegan LP "The Folk Album". |
