Now! My dear jenn - how do you feel about funny old out-of-print but second-hand books. On a subject that interests you, of course. Like say - "The Cooking of the North Pole" damn!! Told you where I live! Never mind. All in a good cause. I've got more goodies in mind for you as well -- but anyroad - do you prefer new books?
Love and laughter,
Santa of the Secret kind.

Megan, I note you were looking for lyrics from a Shirley and Larry Peterson song. I MIGHT be able to help you.

It might be "Shetland Garden" that Shirley wrote when she was 7 years old.

I have a full album "In A Shetland Garden", that I converted to mp3 and if you are interested then contact me at

rabt1952@hotmail.com

God bless.

Vectis, m'dear
Christmas time is coming near
Some years I've been a little slow
But a packet of goodies is gathering below
Yes, I'm a Santa of the South
But South of Never? South of Ever?
The Bat shit from my land of ponds
fertilises more than pots and fronds
Don't doubt Whether - just think Hooray!
Some little goodies will find their way!

very little

but full o'art

or is that heart?

and remember

Postie, postie, don't be slow -

be like Elvis - Go Man Go!

Don't worry your tiny head about who or what I am - just believe I exist and hope that by the time the Mummers get round to doing their Christmas extraction of money from poor unsuspecting people I have managed to get my act together enough to post you a pressie.

You know OF me - but it doesn't involve guitars (they need tuning) or other public performances. I also can tell you a fine tale - but don't tend to write rhyme cos I have no reasons.

Dear freda/esmerelda/margaret thatcher/whatever

Perhaps in a parallel universe I am the santee trying to figure out who you are. Or perhaps we live in a universe of one : "I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together"

Or maybe in some other parallel universe I might be talented enough to write Anderson's Coast and Kitty Kane, and play with my model trains which would be able to run on lines that were not parallel - wouldn't it be nice? But I would never drink Bass straight from the bottle - it has to be in a glass. And if my bones contain the ashes of dying stars I'd rather it were Lennon than Michel Jackson.

We'll understand it all by and by.

It's weird, SS, but your comment about parallel universes has got me thinking. In a way we do operate in parallel universes - you're North (being Santa), I'm South (being a hobbit)and Mudcat is the sort of vortex through which we all communicate - across space, time, from one reality to another.

and according to some, parallel universes are the way it is. That means, according to quantum physics, somewhere, in another universe, I'm sitting typing this post, and you are reading it.

Now I don't pretend to comprehend quantum physics, and I only managed to read the first few pages of A Brief History of time - but one of the things he said in it was - did you know that our bones contain the ashes of dying stars?

It must be that curry I had for dinner tonight - but I really thought you were Jack Halyard for a while there Santa - the jaunty humour and - yes, a particular song reference, made me feel that it was someone very close to home. However, in consideration of the theory of parallel universes, I have realised that you may be somewhere else, probably upside down, and have done some very good homework.

freda

OOOOOOOOOH! Hello Santa. So nice to hear from you.
Dance? Yes I do like country dancing - American and English, and play-party. Anything from before 1900. I've been/sometimes still are - a dance-caller.
(True-love doesn't like to dance with me because I can't help leading - Comes from school days when I was always cast as a boy because I'm tall and boys were few).
I really like the music of "The Albion Band" - groups like that who play earthy old dance tunes and sing with them. I dislike "Steeleye Span" and I've heard enough Irish bands to last me.
Among the American groups I much prefer old "old-timey" dance music, and old jug-band, to modern groups.
I don't like the taste of wine, beer, spitits etc, so the're wasted on me.
I do love chocolate.

This is such fun. Now let me try and guess where you are -- North Pole? Christmas Island? Can't be Easter Island that would be silly. Drop me a few hints. I promise not to find you too easily.
Cheers and Joy from Joy

Dear Secret Santa, whoever you may be:

I thought you said you gave those hogboons a talking to... did you? Because today a package arrived in the mail from some hogboon pretending to be a certain J. Morse, from Maine, USA, but the address was written in the British format.

Anyway, it's only a suspician that it was hogboon-sent, because the cats were all over it. It wasn't marked as a Secret Santa gift, but I'm saving it in the closet, until Yule, just in case it is. Don't want to jinx myself by opening it early. Hogboons are notorious for those sorts of tricks...

Signed: Curious but patient,

Your Santee

I know you are a tallented dark fair red head with at least three eyes for they are blue green and hazel.

Oh and of course yo originally came from Glasgow the highlands the lowlads in the central belt.

Dearest Elfish (clues here perhaps?) Pressently,
I must confess that I'm becoming more and more puzzled! Will confusion continue to reign? Will I ever become enlightened? Many thanks for telling me a little of yourself, though I find it hard to believe that there are other Catters in Surrey, or have I misunderstood your missive? Certainly the timing of your messages seem to be within my time-zone but it has been a little tricky to weed the wheat from the chaff. Methinks I need clearer clues to assist me on my quest, although I am sure that I'm doomed to failure.

I have been good, (no, honestly, titter ye not!), but I do not believe that my Elf need's pity at all, just a good cherishing! As to Band Names, I am certain that an Elf of your acute perception and imagination will be able to make a decision on that very soon. I do hope that my Own Dear Secret Santa will be able to send me some small recording of the music that you and your fellow Elves have been making. That's the sort of present that I should be glad to receive!

Meanwhile I send sincere wishes for Health and Happiness to all involved in this secret endeavour, Blessings this Day.

it seems like you know me (it was that song reference that did it!) i am confused ..... But now it's me that's confused. Which song do you reference - six white boomers tempted and tried on the red and dusty road? You won't find me on the red and dusty road to Gundagai - I may be Dusty but few would call me Slim. And as for being a baby boomer, I am certainly no joey.

and not my auntie podies..? but maybe fifteen bob's your uncle in a world turned upside down. Unlike Consul General Ejaz Ahmed, I have never dined with you, nor even met you at all in real life, but I know quite a few Catters who have had that privilege. (And bugger all help they've been in this exercise of ozfuscation!)

maybe a santa from another realm? do I inhabit a parallel universe, or do the lines converge? And are there still trains on the lines, or has the 2.31 been cancelled again? I say it's not my problem.

I gotta card from my Santa today.
Very puzzling card in vietnamese with an Australian postmark and an upside down stamp.
Does this mean that I have a Santa from the sunny side of the globe? Must do. Everyone knows that Australians have to walk on their hands so they can hang on and not fall off the bottom of the planet.
Thank you Santa.

e Ballad of Gum-Boot Ben
He was an old prospector with a vision bleared and dim.
He asked me for a grubstake, and the same I gave to him.
He hinted of a hidden trove, and when I made so bold
To question his veracity, this is the tale he told.

"I do not seek the copper streak, nor yet the yellow dust;
I am not fain for sake of gain to irk the frozen crust;
Let fellows gross find gilded dross, far other is my mark;
Oh, gentle youth, this is the truth--I go to seek the Ark.

"I prospected the Pelly bed, I prospected the White;
The Nordenscold for love of gold I piked from morn till night;
Afar and near for many a year I led the wild stampede,
Until I guessed that all my quest was vanity and greed.

"Then came I to a land I knew no man had ever seen,
A haggard land, forlornly spanned by mountains lank and lean;
The nitchies said 'twas full of dread, of smoke and fiery breath,
And no man dare put foot in there for fear of pain and death.

"But I was made all unafraid, so, careless and alone,
Day after day I made my way into that land unknown;
Night after night by camp-fire light I crouched in lonely thought;
Oh, gentle youth, this is the truth--I knew not what I sought.

"I rose at dawn; I wandered on. 'Tis somewhat fine and grand
To be alone and hold your own in God's vast awesome land;
Come woe or weal, 'tis fine to feel a hundred miles between
The trails you dare and pathways where the feet of men have been.

"And so it fell on me a spell of wander-lust was cast.
The land was still and strange and chill, and cavernous and vast;
And sad and dead, and dull as lead, the valleys sought the snows;
And far and wide on every side the ashen peaks arose.

"The moon was like a silent spike that pierced the sky right through;
The small stars popped and winked and hopped in vastitudes of blue;
And unto me for company came creatures of the shade,
And formed in rings and whispered things that made me half afraid.

"And strange though be, 'twas borne on me that land had lived of old,
And men had crept and slain and slept where now they toiled for gold;
Through jungles dim the mammoth grim had sought the oozy fen,
And on his track, all bent of back, had crawled the hairy men.

"And furthermore, strange deeds of yore in this dead place were done.
They haunted me, as wild and free I roamed from sun to sun;
Until I came where sudden flame uplit a terraced height,
A regnant peak that seemed to seek the coronal of night.

"I scaled the peak; my heart was weak, yet on and on I pressed.
Skyward I strained until I gained its dazzling silver crest;
And there I found, with all around a world supine and stark,
Swept clean of snow, a flat plateau, and on it lay--the Ark.

"Yes, there, I knew, by two and two the beasts did disembark,
And so in haste I ran and traced in letters on the Ark
My human name--Ben Smith's the same. And now I want to float
A syndicate to haul and freight to town that noble boat."

I met him later in a bar and made a gay remark
Anent an ancient miner and an option on the Ark.
He gazed at me reproachfully, as only topers can;
But what he said I can't repeat--he was a bad old man.

Dear "Ways" or is it "Said" (or is it still unsaid? Or don't you want to say?),

Another sharp report (No, I've not been fired....) from your ever- diligent Scout-Elf.

Well....diligent most of the time. I did take a few hours off to practice with my band. I play bass and sing and the other two Elven, Bishop and Jones, play Stratocaster-uke and drums, respectively. I consider Bishop to be the best electric uke player under two feet high since the legendary Less-Paul. We're still looking for a band name, if you've any suggestions.

(sigh!)...Should an elf want to "Make It Big"?

And I thank you for the good wishes to The Boss in the "Land Of Mountains and Snow" (and occasional other places in the Northern Hemisphere when Santa gets Claus-trophobic), but please take some time to take pity on your own Elf ('s Elf Pity, it is!) stationed right here in Surrey and trying to take his fringe benefits off the top. And shadowing a woman whose desires are "few and far between' doesn't always give one much to write home about. That said, new items ARE being added to augment your fast-accumulating future prosperity. So watch this space, so that you can tell others exactly what space you seem to be staring into.

Your Rockin' Scoout-Elf,
Elfish Pressently

"suspiciously sydney" is it that I am now, me liitle larrikitten? Sydney may be a hot place, but as a guess it's not even warm. It will definitely be reindeer, not six white boomers (nor yet Johnson's crocodiles), looking for your house on the red and dusty road.

As for Karl Marx, I wouldn't try to Kapitalize on any similarity: my beard is far too short. But you could be near the truth with "your voice booms out clear": people have been known to jump when I start to sing. But usually they stay to hear the rest.

tempted i may be, and oft fried,
down under,
this time by a Santa
who's truly a trick
while all your clues are
so cunning and all scan
you're suspiciously sydney
and so verbally quick
ahoy there me Santa
methinks that I know ye
but if its you, then you've stated quite clear
you do NOT look like santa, or even like Karl Marx
and when singing full throttle
your voice booms out clear
but Santas are sneaky
and tricks are aplenty
especially in Mudcat
when plots are all hatched
and so while i wonder
and have my suspicions
i await the last chorus
when truth be dispatched...

I never was very good at this,
I give rhymes and couplets a big miss
Particularly when 'this' rhymes with 'kiss'
and....... oh shit, I've got 'miss';
so let's give it a go and hope for the best
'Best' COULD rhyme with 'this' or 'kiss'
or I could think of something out 'west'
and competely avoid 'kiss' (which is for the 'best)')
'cos 'west' and 'best' - you know what I mean.
......just thinking of a rhyme for 'best'
Now I've got 'mean' and all I can think of
Is 'clean' which is a bit of a clatter (!!).
Not good, not good, gotta do better!
Then again, what does it all matter?
Aha! 'better' and 'matter' I stutter!
Dare I conclude with 'utter'
Too too stupid and simple.
Now I'm stuck - with - ample!
Not one wish stated, actually about a dozen.
I did that last so I can conclude with 'cousin'.
Nah, bring it all on and hope for the 'best'
I'm gonna just leave this rhyming 'mess'.
(with apologies to all of yoos who are rooly good at this rhyming stuff)

Two thoughts, Jacqui:
One, stop that disgusting sniffling. It will not attract a Santa.
Two, Have you considered that I might be your SS? Too evil to comprehend, no?

Here's some serious Santa Clues for you to be chewing on:

My first is in Santa and Claus they say
My second's in reindeer but not in sleigh
My third's in Underhill but not in Freda
My fourth is in follower but not in leader
My fifth is in fourth but not in third
My sixth is in dicky but not in bird
My seventh - no clues: it may not exist:
Are there just six - or twelve - in my list?
I hope that my clues don't cause you to chunder
Tempted and tried, we're oft made to wonder.

Clues so far, then ... Celtic in origin, speaking Italian but with a strange American twang. And a straight line in which direction, I wonder?
And have we ever met, St Nick? Otherwise I'm impressed with the quality of your research!

Anne
