Subject: I wish my love... From: Martin Ryan Date: 07 Mar 99 - 05:49 PM Can anyone come up with a set of words for this, fairly quickly? It doesn't appear to be in the DT nor referred to in the forum - at least on a fairly lazy search! Regards |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Bruce O. Date: 07 Mar 99 - 06:40 PM I wish my love were in a mire, that I might pull her out again? We need more of the lines. |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Martin _Ryan Date: 08 Mar 99 - 07:25 AM Sorry Bruce, a sudden dose of truncation! "I wish my love was a red, red rose...". There have been a scatter of modern Irish recordings of it (Bothy Band and others) - which is basically what my conatact was looking for, I think. Regards p.s. Bruce: A guy came up to me at a sessin in Dublin at the weekend and recommeded I look up a particular sea-song on your site. Now if I could only remember what it was called......"Pat O'Neill"? |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Bruce O. Date: 08 Mar 99 - 11:58 AM "Patrick O'Neal"- a great Irish sea-song in Scarce Songs 1 file. Humorous, yet fairly realistic. "My luve is like a red, red rose"? - Robert Burns, with some borrowing from earlier songs. Scots Musical Mueseum, #402, 1796, but earlier, 1794, in Urbani's 'Scots Songs'. Tune is "Major Graham", but later books confused the name and cited the tune for Burns' song as "Hughie Graham" (the Child ballad) which is set to the Irish, not the Scots, "Druimion dubh Delis" in the Scots Musical Museum (SMM's "Hughie Graham" is in DT).

Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Martin _Ryan Date: 08 Mar 99 - 12:24 PM Bruce Thanks for the "Patrick O'Neal" tip - I'll look it up when I get a chance. On the other: No - not Burns, which I would have to hand. Someone will come up with the Bothy Bnad version, I'm sure. We can chase down its origins later! Regards |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: SeanM Date: 08 Mar 99 - 06:41 PM Could be 'Bold O'Donahue'... Section of the lyrics runs 'I wish my love was a red, red rose upon the garden wall' M |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Philippa Date: 11 Mar 99 - 12:24 PM Could it be the one recorded both by Davy Hammond and by Mairead N¡ Mhaoinigh with Altan)? This song has almost the same line as that quoted for Bold O'Donaghue but sung to a sweeter, wistful tune. "I wish my love was a red red rose, growing in yon garden fair/And I to be the gardener, of her I'd take good care/There's not a month throughout the year, but my love I would renew/I'd garnish her with flowers fair, rosemary, thyme and rue" are the words that I recall at the moment. |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Martin _Ryan Date: 11 Mar 99 - 12:28 PM Phillipa That's the one! And what's more, I think may have the recording of Davy Hammond singing it, now that you mention it! You might post them here in case I'm wrong. Regards |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: GUEST,Luigi Date: 27 Feb 00 - 11:07 AM So, I'm ion search too for the complete words of I WIsh My Love Was a Red Red Rose - the one sung by Bothy band and that appears, too, in an Arty McGlynn album. i've got them both, but my listening comprehension is pityful, and I'm missing some of the words. Anyone could help? Thanks all Luigi |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Wolfgang Date: 02 Mar 00 - 05:00 AM Luigi, a version has been posted in the Forum back in 1998 in the thread titled I wish my love was a red red rose. I don't know how close it is to the Bothy Band version which I haven't heard, but it is close to what Mick Hanly sings on 'As I went over Blackwater' and he says he got the lyrics from Triona Ni Domhnaill who eventually was a singer with the Bothy Band. Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: Joan Date: 02 Mar 00 - 10:37 PM Don't think it's what anyone here is looking for, but when I saw the name of the thread, could only think of (from I forget what collection of southern songs): "I wish my love was in a ditch, without no clothing to her "And nettles up and down her back because she was not truer." Heehee. Joan |
Subject: RE: I wish my love... From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 03 Mar 00 - 03:07 PM The same song Davy Hammond sings has also been recorded by Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh with Altan. |
