Hi,

I am looking for versions/verses to: "Ain't That Trouble In Mind" also known as "Don't get Trouble in your Mind"

Here's one I sing:

Days are breaking, breaking in my heart
Think I must be getting old, I've got an old sweetheart
Don't get trouble in your mind
Don't get trouble in your mind

Thanks,

Richie

New Lost City Ramblers did it and I believe their words are published in the book they put out (sorry I'm not within reach of my bookshelf at present so don't have the title). There is a good fiddle/banjo instrumental version on one of Mike Yates's "Far in the Mountains" field recordings collections availabe from Musical Traditions. If anybody is unaware of these recordings I strongly reccommend them; Two double CD's nicely presented and with good notes and photographs at a very good price.

Remembering recent discussions re the late Peter Kennedy and his methods can I just say that this is how it should be done.

DON'T GET TROUBLE IN YOUR MIND
As recorded by Frank Blevins & His Tar Heel Rattlers, 1928.

Days are breaking, breaking in my heart.
Think I am a poor boy, I got an old sweetheart.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

I went to see that girl of mine, get my business right.
She says you are the meanest boy that ever lived or died.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

Again I went to see that girl; she said she loved me some,
Threw her arms around me like a grapevine around a gum.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

When you see that gal of mine, tell her if you can:
When she goes to make her bread, to wash her nasty hands.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

When you see that girl of mine, something you must tell her:
If she don't like my way o' doin', to get some other feller.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

The last time I saw that girl, she's standin' in the door,
Johnny's arms around her and a baby on the floor.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

Trouble, trouble, trouble in my mind.
If trouble don't kill me, sure I'll never die.
Don't get trouble in your mind; don't get trouble in your mind.

Hey Greg, surely at' grapevine 'round the gum rather than gun. Slip of the finger I guess.

A variation on one verse:

If you see that girl of mine tell her if you please
Before she goes to make her dough roll up her dirty sleeves
Don't get etc etc

and a variation of the second line in verse one:

Think I must be getting old, I've got no sweetheart

Thanks so much the lyrics.

AIN'T THAT TROUBLE IN MIND
As recorded by Fields Ward & the Grayson County Railsplitters, 1929.

Trouble, oh, trouble, it's trouble all the time.
If trouble don't kill me, I'll live a long time.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

My mammy told me something; my daddy told me more.
I ever I married in my life, be trouble in the door.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

What my mammy tells me, is surely come to pass.
A-drinkin' and a-gambling will be my run [=ruin?] at last.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

What my daddy tells me is sure to be done.
I'll be in the penitentiary before I'm twenty-one.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

Sometimes I have money; sometimes I have none.
When I get on a drunken spree, my money's soon all gone.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

Sometimes I drink one dram; sometimes I drink two.
When I get on a drunken spree, hard telling what I'll do.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

My daddy told me to marry, but not for love or riches,
To marry a gal about six foot tall so she can't wear the britches.
Ain't that trouble in mind? Ain't that trouble in mind?

Richie:

In the Fields Ward version:

"Drinking and gambling will be my ruin at last"

and in verse 4,

"I'll be in the penitentiary before I'm twenty-one"

Tune is aka "Skipping and Flying," and at least one version of "Molly and Tenbrooks" is set to this melody.

Hot or Hoot:

Not a slip of the finger...just ears that need cleaning...

The Freighthoppers recorded the Fields Ward version. Double Decker recorded the Frank Blevins version...great song, either way...

Re the questioned line in verse 4 of the Fields Ward version quoted above 10 Oct 06:

it should be:

I'll be in the penitentiary before I'm twenty-one.

Bob

(though I must say "I'll live a couple of centuries before I'm 21" is the way it sometimes seems when you're 20.)

DON'T GET TROUBLE IN YOUR MIND
As recorded by J. E. Mainer's Mountaineers, on "Classic Sides 1937-1941"

1. Went to see my baby, standin' in the door,
Shoes an' stockin's in her hand, her bare feet on the floor.

CHORUS: Don't get troubled in your mind, your mind; don't get troubled in your mind.
When you see that gal o' mine, don't get troubled in your mind.

2. Went to see my baby; thought I'd do some slippin'.
I kissed 'er right smack in the mouth; her doggone nose was leakin'.

3. When you see that gal o' mine, tell her if you can,
When she goes to make her bread, to wash her nasty hand.

4. Now she's gone and left me; shore do wish her well.
Hope she's got her another man, then she can go to—uhh.

5. Went to see Miss Suzy; she's standin' in the door,
Shoes and stockin's in her hand, her feet all over the floor.
