Subject: Help with title and/or words?
From: McMusic
Date: 08 Mar 99 - 02:20 AM

Hello Mudcatters everywhere and all ships at sea. Recently heard a sea song sung by Gordon Bok, but don't know the title--it's on a friend's home-made tape and she never wrote it down. Also, find it hard to catch all the words, so if someone can help, I'd 'preciate it. The first part of the chorus goes something like this--

Well, it's three score and ten/boys and men/were lost from Grimsby town/from Yarmouth down to Scarborough, many hundreds more were drowned....

Thanks in advance, folks. Love you all.

McM.

John, Thanks. Sometimes get it into me head that I need the full title to the song; I never think--even though it says so right on the screen (duh!)--to enter a phrase. So, again, McMusic with a brother in New South Wales sends his thanks to John in Brisbane.

From Roy Palmer's "Oxford Book of Sea Songs".
"Written by Grimsby fisherman, William Delf, to help raise money (here's his original title of his 8 verse poem) "In Memoriam of the poor Fisherman who lost their lives in the Dreadful Gale from Grimsby & Hull, Feb. 8&9, 1889". In becoming a song & passing into the oral tradition it lost 6 verses & picked up a new one plus a chorus along with the tune". Barry
