Subject: Origins: Sean O`Riada and Carrickfergus From: ard mhacha Date: 12 Oct 06 - 07:12 AM This weeks Irish Post [London] has an article by Malcolm Rodgers on Sean O`Riada`s contribution to Irish music. In the article Rodgers interviews Sean`s son Peadar who states that his father wrote Carrickfergus at a time when it was frowned upon to write in the traditional idiom, so he therefore kept quiet about his involvment. Peadar says," if we had a penny for every time Carrickfergus was sung, we`d be able to build that airstrip my father always dreamed about", no mention of the location of the airstrip. The release of the Mise Eire film on DVD was also highlighted, an address for anyone interested in obtaining a copy was given as, Copperplate Consultants, 68 Belleville Road, London SW11 6PP., E-MAIL, alan.oleary@btinternet.com. |

I'd missed the recent contribution to the other thread - which is HERE Probably best to stick to one thread on this one - it's confusing enough as it ie! Regards p.s. The "Brigid Vasey" line has me thinking.... |

Subject: RE: Origins: Sean O`Riada and Carrickfergus From: Lighter Date: 12 Oct 06 - 10:25 AM Could O'Riada have "merely" composed the haunting melody ? As great as it is, it never sounded very "folklike" to me. |
