Subject: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 13 Oct 06 - 05:08 PM Art just called me and asked me to let you all know his computer is kaput. It smelled of smoke so he turned it off. Went to reboot it yesterday and the fan wouldn't come on. Today, it will not come on at all. So..until his son, Chris, can get down there, he is without email, etc. in case you wonder why you don't get an answer from him. I will call him in a couple of days and see how things are progressing and pass on any messages; either post them here or send me a PM, please. Thanks! kat |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Big Mick Date: 13 Oct 06 - 06:39 PM I just spoke with Art. He is doing great, and has the SOS out to his son. My guess is that he will be up and running in a few days again. He sends his best wishes. Mick |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Stilly River Sage Date: 13 Oct 06 - 07:31 PM Might be something as simple as replacing the power supply and that fan. But if it starts to smell funny or smoke turn it off immediately! Here's hoping he's back online soon. I had to replace a DVD burner in my computer last week, it just stopped. Maybe with all of the work he's doing with his CDs his burner it started taking itself too seriously. :-/ SRS |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 13 Oct 06 - 07:34 PM And he was just talking about how much fun he's been having with his "prject," SRS. It really has been a wonderful thing for him. Here's to Chris getting there, soon. |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 14 Oct 06 - 12:31 AM when my original computer, a laptop died, I lost lots of vital stuff - tho as I could do without it, I did wonder how vital it was! But then I didn't have the treasures Art has. good luck, Art & Chris, in restoring Art's computer to full memory, & Art to full membership! sandra |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Stilly River Sage Date: 14 Oct 06 - 01:33 AM I've wondered about that. How has his work progressed? He said at one time that he had upwards of 1000 tapes. SRS |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 14 Oct 06 - 10:45 AM I'll ask, SRS, when I talk to him in a day or two. I know he said Carol was at risk of forgetting what he looked like as he had been spending so much time at the computer she hadn't seen him in days!**bg** I don't think he can say enough just how much joy that project has brought him. What a Treasure, both him and his material and Mudcatters who helped it long. |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 14 Oct 06 - 11:39 AM Message to Art - Just sent you a query today with a bunch of questions about the origins of "Tell Old Bill," your "Ol' Bill the Rollin' Pin," and inviting you to brainstorm about ways to trace "Tell Old Bill's" origins and any parallel versions from the 1920s or earlier. Here's hoping your computer gets fixed soon! But not to worry, take your time answering. Just wanted to make sure you know it's coming. Best, Bob |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: GUEST,Cruiser Date: 14 Oct 06 - 09:55 PM Art Thieme's computer has died Obit: Freddy Fender, Tex-Mex singer (Oct. 14 06) Man, I was speed reading through the thread headers and the juxtaposition of the 2 threads above…"Obit: Art Thieme and died" had my heart sinking for a moment! |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Stilly River Sage Date: 15 Oct 06 - 12:48 AM I'm glad to hear that he's taken to this project--what a treasure for everyone! If he's getting a lot of use out of the CD burner then we might keep our eyes open for a message saying "burner died." They wear out, but they're cheap and are easy to replace. So if that occurs, we can do another little sortie and keep him up and running. SRS |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 15 Oct 06 - 04:24 PM I already offered, Dave, and he declined saying his son built the one he has specially for him and he just would like for Chris to fix that one. Of course, if we twisted his arm or one just showed up, perhaps?*bg* |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 18 Oct 06 - 05:30 PM I've had company and didn't get back with Art until today. Chris will be down on Saturday and take a look at the computer. If he can fix it there, he will. Otherwise, he will take it home and fix it, then birng it back. Art and Carol are both fighting off the dregs of flu. He sounded tired, but delighted to hear your messages. They got quite a few chuckles from him. Thanks, folks. |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: katlaughing Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:38 PM Just an update. Art's son was able to fix his computer, but had to take it home with him to do so. Art will be back online as soon as Chris is able to bring it back. Probably not this coming weekend, but soon after. kat |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Oct 06 - 09:03 PM SINS - ...informed everyone via email... The classic one of these was back when you had to add your own accessories (drives, modems, etc) to your computer. The ZIP drive "package" from IOMEGA included a ZIP drive and an "installation floppy," but the instructions for installing the drive were on a ZIP disk that couldn't be read until the installation was completed. The installation floppy didn't follow the instructions, so one nearly always had to uninstall and reinstall (after printing the instructions?) to get it to work right. Need I say that the manual (on the ZIP drive) didn't mention how to uninstall completely, so at least the first reinstall attempt nearly failed? And they had time to think about whether they were doing something stupid. John |

Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: JohnInKansas Date: 25 Oct 06 - 11:46 PM Old law in Massachusetts: "If a motor propelled vehicle meets a horse and rider or a horse drawn cart, the motorist must pull off to the side of the road to allow the horse to pass. If the horse is frightened the motorist should hide the vehicle in the nearest bushes. If the horse continues to be frightened, the motorist shall disassemble the vehicle and hide the pieces in the bushes." Amended, IIRC, ca. 1958(?). John |
Subject: RE: Art Thieme's computer has died From: Rex Date: 07 Nov 06 - 12:16 PM Well sonofagun, I got a letter from Art telling me his computer was toasted. I know it means quite a bit to him to be able to be in touch with all us 'Catters. I was wishing I lived closer so I could come by and try to doctor the thing. So the next best thing is try to find someone that is nearby. I was going to post something about that. You are all way ahead of me. It's good to know Art will be able to get back online soon. Kat, you are always on the ball. Rex |
