Art just called me and asked me to let you all know his computer is kaput. It smelled of smoke so he turned it off. Went to reboot it yesterday and the fan wouldn't come on. Today, it will not come on at all. So..until his son, Chris, can get down there, he is without email, etc. in case you wonder why you don't get an answer from him.

I will call him in a couple of days and see how things are progressing and pass on any messages; either post them here or send me a PM, please.

I just spoke with Art. He is doing great, and has the SOS out to his son. My guess is that he will be up and running in a few days again.

Might be something as simple as replacing the power supply and that fan. But if it starts to smell funny or smoke turn it off immediately! Here's hoping he's back online soon.

I had to replace a DVD burner in my computer last week, it just stopped. Maybe with all of the work he's doing with his CDs his burner it started taking itself too seriously. :-/

when my original computer, a laptop died, I lost lots of vital stuff - tho as I could do without it, I did wonder how vital it was! But then I didn't have the treasures Art has.

I've wondered about that. How has his work progressed? He said at one time that he had upwards of 1000 tapes.

I know he said Carol was at risk of forgetting what he looked like as he had been spending so much time at the computer she hadn't seen him in days!**bg** I don't think he can say enough just how much joy that project has brought him. What a Treasure, both him and his material and Mudcatters who helped it long.

I'm glad to hear that he's taken to this project--what a treasure for everyone! If he's getting a lot of use out of the CD burner then we might keep our eyes open for a message saying "burner died." They wear out, but they're cheap and are easy to replace. So if that occurs, we can do another little sortie and keep him up and running.

My sister-in-law and brother lost power (as did most of the area0 in the Buffalo snow storm. Her boss informed everyone via email that the office was closed. DOH!

I've had company and didn't get back with Art until today. Chris will be down on Saturday and take a look at the computer. If he can fix it there, he will. Otherwise, he will take it home and fix it, then birng it back.

Art and Carol are both fighting off the dregs of flu. He sounded tired, but delighted to hear your messages. They got quite a few chuckles from him. Thanks, folks.

Just an update. Art's son was able to fix his computer, but had to take it home with him to do so. Art will be back online as soon as Chris is able to bring it back. Probably not this coming weekend, but soon after.

The classic one of these was back when you had to add your own accessories (drives, modems,etc) to your computer. The ZIP drive "package" from IOMEGA included a ZIP drive and an "installation floppy," but the instructions for installing the drive were on a ZIP disk that couldn't be read until the installation was completed. The installation floppy didn't follow the instructions, so one nearly always had to uninstall and reinstall (after printing the instructions?) to get it to work right.

Need I say that the manual (on the ZIP drive) didn't mention how to uninstall completely, so at least the first reinstall attempt nearly failed?

And they had time to think about whether they were doing something stupid.

Well sonofagun, I got a letter from Art telling me his computer was toasted. I know it means quite a bit to him to be able to be in touch with all us 'Catters. I was wishing I lived closer so I could come by and try to doctor the thing. So the next best thing is try to find someone that is nearby. I was going to post something about that. You are all way ahead of me. It's good to know Art will be able to get back online soon. Kat, you are always on the ball.
