One of my favourites was 'Swamp' or similar, years ago. The first three frames had one of the characters playing a lagerphone while the other became more and more teary. The last frame had the listener saying to the lagerphonist,
"Danny Boy always makes me cry."

I remember an old Popeye cartoon where Bluto (the bad guy) was some sort of music maestro. After Popeye ate his spinach (presumably without the E. coli), he became a concert pianist and played (possibly among other things) "Poet and Peasant" by von Suppe as he vanquished Bluto. Now whenever I hear that piece, I think "That's the one from the Popeye cartoon!"

SpongBob's neighbor and co-worker, Squidward, plays very
bad, very loud, clarinet.

Meanwhile, the incidental music to the cartoon is a sublime
mix of melodeon and concertina tunes, ranging from Irish to
Morris. As the series has gone on, the repertoire has
expanded. But there's this one hornpipe they play that
is absolutely brilliant. I 'had' it for a while on English
concertina, but it's slipped out of my memory, now.

I wish they'd release a soundtrack album with all the incidental
music in full, artists credited.

If you mean "comic strips", there's the old Pogo strip by Walt Kelly, with its send-up of Deck the Halls:

"Deck us all with Boston Charlie" etc.

Just been listening to Gerrard Hoffnung's Concert at the Festival Hall, Sheer musical lunacy, including a sympphony for three vacuum cleaners and a floor polisher, and the late Dennis Brain playing Leopold Mozart on a length of garden hose (and making it sound musical!)
Hoffnung was a cartoonist by trade, and some of his stuff is brilliant, there is a famoous one of a mixed choir , all mouths open, with a blackbird flying into them with a mouthful of worms.
Sadly, I have been unable to find much of his work on the net.

I think Hoffnung's stuff is still held actively in copyright - I have seen books and recordings - I even managed to score some (if not all) of the animated toons on a DVD of collected animations.

Quite a lot of these have been turning up in Aus in the 'cheapies' - I sat down and hand indexed them ...

On 101 Cartoons - Aussies will understand when I say - available in Crazy Clark's for AUD$30 - if they have any left.

You may be right about copyright, I know that his wife was still looking after the estate and still giving talks about him up to two years ago.
I listened to the Oxford Union recording yesterday which features the original monologue on which 'Murphy annd the Bricks' was based. His delivery and timing still make me laugh after about 50 years, and his concluding serious remarks about the government of the day ans Arts funding still apply. A truly great guy!

Yup, that's it. One of history's two great banjo cartoons--the other being the Peanuts cartoon Pete Seeger included in How to Play the 5-String Banjo, which has Linus saying "I feel sorry for little babies....When a little baby is born into this cold world, he's confused! He's frightened! He needs something to cheer him up...The way I see it as soon as a baby is born, he should be isssued a banjo!"

Make that THREE great banjo cartoons. One I have yellowing on my kitchen bulletin board from the cartoon "Bizzaro" shows two dogs peering around the edge of a door, looking at the banjo propped up against the wall.

One dog says "He calls it THE ENFORCER"
Second dog asks "Does he hit you with it?"
First dog "no, he plays it"

I LOVE that

The other Bizzaro musical cartoon on the bulletin board has a Plumbing van with shamrocks on the side careening down the street with the driver merrily singing "Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling...."

For the record, I'm fond of a great deal of banjo music, but I'd rather have a plumber who doesn't sing Danny Boy. EVER.

I posted a query as to whether anyone else remembered the Punch cartoon about the Lomaxes on the BBC American Folk History thread. I also asked my friend the BBC's Quote·Unquote maven Nigel Rees. Unsurprisingly he came up with the answer, which probably fits best on this thread. The drawing was by Hewison & appeared in Punch vol 233 page 73 1957: it shows a strumming country bluesman singing "I-got-the-Alan-Lomax-ain't-been-round-to-record-me-blues".

Pogo comic strips (cuts???) commonly had musical instruments -- banjos in particular -- especially when the characters were lounging in a flat-bottom boat, drifting slowly with the current. The sides of the boat always had in-group joke names (and the names changed from panel to panel -- if they were incorporated into a film, the continuity girl would take to drink by the third day of shooting).

Typically, the banjo was a 3 1/2 string tenor -- never a 5-string that I recall -- and was seldom played by Pogo, but more commonly by Churchy La Femme or Porkypine. I don't remember Howland Owl ever playing, and Albert the Alligator may have, but I don't think so.

Of course, Pogo always featured Walt Kelly's 'renditions' of well-known songs, too. In addition to "Deck Us All With Boston Charley," there was:

Whom, how many rage?
Weary beer in a canteloupe age.
Aunt Selma was hurt amidst Corsican wurt,
... and at that point, Churchy, who is singing this at the top of his voice to a baby, gets interrupted by the baby shouting, "QUIET!"

And no, I don't know what "wurt" is, either. I think Kelly ran out of steam just there.

The modern comic strip in my local paper, "Zits," features a teenager who plays a Stratocaster and has a garage band with his friends, but they don't seem to do any vocals, so we can't tell what they're playing.
