Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 11/17 From: Dave Ruch Date: 17 Oct 06 - 01:45 PM How unfortunate that this would be planned for the same weekend as Eisteddfod 2006, a festival of traditional folksongs in NYC. Perhaps this would draw from a somewhat different sector of the folk crowd, but still.... |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 17 Oct 06 - 01:55 PM It was the only weekend that the camp had open. I lost a banjo presenter because of a conflict with the NYC event. There's another smaller (one-day) event on Long Island. Another qualified banjo picker raised his hand. But in a tri-state area, there has to be room for everyone. The guy heading up the songwriter session is John Taylor. That should bring in people. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 17 Oct 06 - 02:01 PM I just went over to their website, the Camp Greenkill event is 180 degrees different. They're a concert venue (and a very good offering too). Ours is not. Camp Greenkill is for the pickers and singers themselves. It's a place to come and jam, share, learn, enjoy. It is 100% particapatory. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Greg B Date: 17 Oct 06 - 02:10 PM How's the food? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 17 Oct 06 - 02:34 PM Food is good. If you come, you can request vegitarian, special diet (within limits). It's there, you don't have to cook it, or wash the dishes, or go anyplace. This is a park-your-car Friday, don't touch it until Sunday afternoon event. If it works out, it will be people jamming, swapping music, hanging out, there's trails, lakes (hey, it's a camp). Coming? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 11/17 From: GUEST Date: 17 Oct 06 - 03:47 PM Will any of the weekend take place outdoors? |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 17 Oct 06 - 04:02 PM Weather permitting... For example, the Gospel Sing on Sunday will take place with the mountains behind you and an autumn lake in front. Need a brochure? |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 11/17 From: GUEST,cardboard cutout Date: 17 Oct 06 - 05:41 PM Somewhat off-topic, I acknowledge, but does anyone know if the summer Girl Scout camp, Camp Mogisca, is still there, near Port Jervis? I was a Camp Counsellor there in 1972. The Girl Scouts came from Morristown, NJ. I came from England. It was a good summer. These days I go to Folk festivals all summer. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 11/17 From: GUEST Date: 17 Oct 06 - 06:00 PM Not sure. There office is closed by now. Perhaps someone there will answer tomorrow. I'm five or six counties away. Nice place. They run kids things all year and special events like yoga weekends, art weekends, pioneering, they even have weddings up there too. This is the first Folk Music event. It really a non-concert. We want everyone to come, pick, and take part. Their brochure says, "You're the star." |

Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 20 Oct 06 - 09:33 AM About fifty people have signed up making for a pleasntly diverse group of folk musicians. A lot of guitars and a few banjos. Wish we had a fiddler to two. But there's still a month before the event. |
Subject: RE: Folklore: Folk Music Weekend, Port Jervis NY 1 From: Philj200 Date: 23 Oct 06 - 10:33 AM I need to put together a list of gospel songs for the session on Sunday morning after breakfast during the Folk Music Weekend. I'm thinking of Keep on the Sunny Side Circle Be Unbroken Lone Pilgrim (personal favorite) Amazing Grace (which I'm bored with) Then I run out of gas, help! I need seven of eight tunes, which I'll put lyrics and chords to. They should be easy to sing and probably better know, not too religious stuff. The level of people attending will be all over the map. Philj200@hotmail.com |
