I have a friend in Columbus Montana who has been running a small summer festival called " The Musician's Rendezvous" for about 9 years. It takes place about 50 miles west of Billings, in a 35 acre park called Itch-Ke-Pe on the banks of the Yellowstone. It features Traditional music of all kinds, with camping space available for 3,000 people. My friend (name of Aron Strange) said to me that Mudcatters would be more than welcome this year. In fact, he would designate a separate area to serve as a camping and music section for Mudcat folk. It would accomodate approximately 1000 of us. The festval is slated for the weekend of August 14, and will feature camping, informal music jams, available trout fishing, and a performance stage at another nearby park. Aron would love to have folks like Rick F, Dan M, and any other Mudcat artists perform! This sounds like a great, hassle-free opportunity to me.I would like to hear what others (including our friend Max) think about this idea. I can't describe the beauty of this area...LEJ |

Imagine waking up early, while the rest of the camp's asleep, and wetting your line by the golden light of a Montana sunrise. Or fishing as the moon comes out, with the sound of sweet music coming from the campfires. It is also just 50 miles to Big Fork, the headwaters of the Madison and the Jefferson( Both named by Lewis and Clark while on their journey of exploration), and the Bighorn is just 70 miles away. There are more blue ribbon trout streams within an 80 mile radius of Columbus than anywhere in the lower 48. Columbus is a small town, but offers several restaurants, taverns, tackle shops and motels. They would all be within walking distance of the park. Course most of us would be just fine sleeping in our tents and campers, and eating off the grill. Aron wanted me to give out his email address in case anyone had questions about anything. It is Aron@strange.to This is exciting! I am looking forward to that midnight jam where Art sings "Tennessee Stud" accompanied by Rick and Sandy. Or maybe Dan will favor us with "Lord Bateman" accompanied only by the rush of the Yellowstone and the breeze in the cottonwoods. What say? |

Could you imagine spending a day cruising Elderly, another fishing for bass and walleye in my lake, sing in the pub, and then take off for Montana and a few days singing with the 'Catters and fishing for the trout in those fabled streams. Nirvana. Let's make plans for next year and I just won't book on that weekend. But I think I am going to be able to make the Folk Society Getaway Weekend in Maryland this year. If you flew into Billings, which is the closest thing in Montana to an actual city, there's a damn nice Holiday Inn as well as Ramada, Couple Best Westerns, etc. The 50 mile drive from there to Columbus would be manageable. Big Mick! You are scheduling 6 months in advance!?!I am impressed! Disappointed, but impressed. This would be more rewarding, though. In your heart, you know I'm right. |

(If I'm not, ooops!) I'll be on tour during that time and on your weekend will be playing the "Heritage River Festival" in Northern Ontario. (also a beautiful area, I'm told) If this is an annual event then count me in for next year. When Sandy Paton said he'd been "looking for this kind of community for years", I couldn't have agreed with him more. Most of the folks I play for (and with) every year, love this kind of music and often the best times for me are the jam sessions and chat before or after a concert. Problem is that you can't take 'em all back to Toronto afterwards, so a lot of time is spent saying "goodbye" and"hope to see you again next year". With the Mudcat, you can visit any time you like...but you don't get to PLAY with 'em. I'm starting a new tour on March 18th which will take me through Connecticut, Mass., and down to Washington. I'll be looking for any Mudcat sweatshirts along the way. It looks like I'll have a few days just to bum around as well, so Heather will be coming with me, and she'll finally see first hand the exciting, dangerous things a folksinger gets up to! Being a Glasgow gal, she's probably eaten some pretty strange things, so maybe I'll try and find her some Possum Pie! |

Tour dates, including (for Roger of Baltimore, who isn't really from Baltimore at all) the date of his Folk Song Society of Greater Washington concert, to be held at the Ethical Society building. Don't miss this one, folks, as it may be a while before we can get him south of the border again! Sure wish we could make the Mudstock gathering, but it won't be this year, I fear. The guy's a fishing fanatic! He goes all the way to Iceland just to catch a big salmon, for cryin' out loud, when he could get one already smoked from Eddie Bauer. Imagine! He's on the staff at the Pinewoods Spring Weekend this year, which is held about nine miles from where I live, and they expect to hear him sing all those great Irish ballads. Hah! The camp is on a small lake that is loaded with small-mouth bass. You know, those fish that pose for all the Field and Stream covers, leaping and twisting and generally showing off. The salmon I got in Iceland and a fairly hefty largemouth bass that I caught in a pond where the fish were so many and so active that they were just about leap frogging each other to get the lure. An incredible spot! The bass went to the fishing buddy who had very kindly shared the fishing hole with me. There are a number of fine old traditional songs that wax at length about angling. I mean to learn 1 or 2 in the not too distant future. The Pinewoods Spring Folk Music Weekend referred to by Sandy above is 28-31MAY in Falls Village, CT. Saga Grey and I are the staff performers and, of course, the weekend is really about everybody singing. Any Mudcatters who might be interested in attending can get information by calling 718-826-1776. Depending on what type of room you choose and whether you stay through Sunday or Monday, the cost is approximately $200 - $275, food included. I have never been to the place but Liam (Yes, Kat, there really is a Liam!) was "World Famous" there 30 or 35 years ago. I look forward to it... AND TO MONTANA!!!

There are rattlers in Montana (though I've never seen one), but you find them in the more rugged terrain, not the grassy fields of the Stillwater Valley. Because it is a dry climate, there aren't many insects to speak of. |

I finally gave in to a pop-up that is surprisingly roomy and had a stupid accessory for a pop-up camper...Air Conditionng!!! Works quite well too. So at least on the worst days,it's still OK. Of course I still had a trick or two up my sleeve...like on the first weekend we planned to go out, I quite craftily avoided it by having a heart attack!!! As it turns out, I think I'm enjoying the damn thing more than she is now. It's all tolerable in the shade says she who would die without her A/C! Where I am, Casper, WY, gets HOT in August, but run up the mountain and in 5 minutes you've got it made in the shade. Rog is frugal. Last summer he bought a 13ft travel trailer, circa 1966, gutted it, rewired it, etc. He's got it all ready to go anywhere. I've been reducing my bodily structure. One day when I was lamenting the lack of loss that week. He teased me about shutting me up in the trailer with my computer and NO pizza delivery! We decided to name it the "Pumpkin Shell" after that, since he started reciting that (Peter, Peter, Pumpkin eater) nursery rhyme to me. So, as I ramble on, what I'm trying to say is, watch for the Pumpkin Shell in MT. I don't go in for primative camping anymore. He's even got it wired to handle my O2 concentrator, though at the rate I am going with loss, I may not have to have that by then! When he looked at it, I told him he couldn't buy unless he let my friends and me paint it like a "traveler's" wagon...so ya'll better bring some paint! Oh, and WHAT is wrong with the Moody Blues, I might ask? Got to interview them for an article I did a few years ago; fun and kind phoak! Too electrified, I suppose, eh? Get out the maps and you will see that Columbus is on the highway between Billings and Bozeman (I live in Bozeman). I am at the public library using a terminal to catch up on Mudcat news, and my time runs out in a few minutes. I don't know when I will be able to check back in. We are used to driving long distances in Montana. If you aren't up to the adventure of roughing it in the campground, there are other towns along the highway with motels/hotels and bread and breakfast inns. This is exciting!! I may get a chance to actually meet some of you face to face after 'talking' to each other on this forum for two years!!

We just lived across the river from there.I don't remember any fires, but my siblings might or my dad. Lonesome, I really consider myself to be more of a Coloradoan, as my ancestors settled outside of Boulder nad on the Western Slope. I grew up picnicking at SnoMass before they even thought of putting in a ski resort; it was just lovely cows and pastures back then. The year my ex worked up there helping to build the damn thing, my son and I spent part of the summer in a tent and had a blast; he was 2yrs old then and thought it was a lark. It is just a couple of buildings with a name, but there is the ROAD KILL CAFE. Sorry, no road kill on the menu, but they do have burgers and fries, and a neat sign for a photo to take back home.
There is also an interesting waterfall where the Boulder River disappears underground and then comes out the side of a rock wall. It's the Natural Bridge State Monument, south of McLeod. alice in montana |

Grits and fresh-baked scones will be served, along with lashings of red eye gravy. Sounds simply brill,eh mates? Back when Max and Dick were doing the Mudcat tee-shirt, I tried to hook them up with one of my clients in Alabama that print on shirts that they dye in different colors of clay. The project fell through with them (sorry about whatever happened there, Max, I know their shirts are expensive, and they are busy, too). Here is an example of what I did for them for southern states and footprints in mud (tread lightly). I did a series of designs that look like they are embossed in mud, since I thought it was a good concept to connect to the earth dye. I could do a design of the shape of Montana like it is pressed into mud and then a catfish inside the state... what do you think? example of Southern states shapes or footprints in mud (tread lightly)

There is an old one called The Murray in Livingston, which is an interesting place. Absarokee (ab-zor-kee) has the Stillwater Lodge. Big Timber has a super-8 motel. Columbus has Super-8 Motel, Git's Big Sky Motel, Riverside Cabins, Super-8 Townhouse Inn. Laurel has a Best Western, Laurel Ridge, Russell Motel, Welcome Travelers. Billings is much larger and has more choices. |

He is very active in the Bozeman Folklore Society and he plays hammered dulcimer in the old time string band here. They are sponsoring an evening of Old Time music by Rick Thum and Dan Levenson, from St. Louis, on May 8th. Workshops for hammered dulcimer and banjo the afternoon of the 8th.
I need more information on the Aug 14 event to pass on to the musicians here. Aron's email address bounced back to me. Who will be performing on stage at the Rendezvous? Is there a charge for the performance (exact time and date)? When can people show up for camping and jamming? Are there performances on Aug 14 and 15? If anyone wants to extend their Montana visit after the 15th (Sunday), there is a Monday night (8pm) bluegrass session and Tuesday night old time session in Bozeman at the old Baxter Hotel lobby. Sunday night is the Irish session. There is also a very active bluegrass session in Helena, but I don't have the location or day. There are Helena Mudcatters, so maybe someone from that session can provide the info. |
