This is my favourite though:

Self Player

I've heard that there is some one in the Birmingham (UK) area who plays this or something similar.

Those melodeons on the Beyerland site look fantastic- they seem to have A D G C and odd differing arrangements with minor keys. I'd love to have a go with one. - go to the blue clicky above on manufacturers of accordeons. Has anyone in the UK got one?

Oh and you'll hardly ever find one in the UK. If you want one I'd suggest you go through the manufacturers. A comprehensive list can be found at:

Manufacturers of Accordians

I think that the Steyrische boxes are played like continental boxes with lots of cross rowing and the extra rows mean they can play in more keys on the same box.

There are numerous types of button accordian from the Alpine countries. Some with PA basses some with melodeon bases with two, three, four or five treble rows. I tried a Steyrische with the horns and thought it a wonderful sounding bass (it had the glichton? club button which made it a bit harder to play).

Swiss

Steyrische

The Steyrishce and oergeli being the most common.

I believe the one with the horns is actually a Hungarian
variant. Generally two rows, tuned in fourths (as opposed
to fifths, which means our D/G would be a G/D with the
lower pitched and outer row being G).

Isn't that the one with the "horns" (in teh acoustical music sense) that modify the sound of the basses?

I tried a Tyrolean melodeon as you describe at Accordions of London at the Sidmouth festival.

Accordions of London are at http://www.accordionsoflondon.com/   but I can't see the instrument listed on the site.

I was looking through some accordion sites yesterday, and came across a "tyrolean accordion" which seemed to me to be a 5-row melodeon with a standard accordion bass. Now at first I thought that it was a continental chromatic, but the specs stated keys G C F Bb Eb
so I guess it wasnt and I couldnt find any stores in the UK that might stock them. I'd certainly be interested in an A D G C F version
has anyone got any info?
