I got a call from Alaska Mike's wife Tawmmie letting me know that he's in critical condition in hospital in Anchorage. ( I don't know which hospital). He's been in since Monday with a herniated twisted intestine, and has been heavily sedated. The good news is that they took him off dialysis this morning, although he's still unconscious. Tawmmie asked me to post this so that prayers/good thoughts/positive vibes/healing light can be directed his way. When he comes out of sedation and can sit up, Tawmmie will bring his laptop in to him, so we can get all the gory details from Mike himself. OK, 'Catters, let's help him get well. Seamus |

But his vital signs have stabilized, but he's very swollen with fluid retention. In fact, his kids are calling him 'Jabba the Dad'. Tawmmie is very grateful for all the prayers and good wishes, and remains upbeat though she herself was hoarse and sounded exhausted. He is in the Alaska Regional CCU Center, Room 12, but of course, he cannot have phone calls........yet. So keep those thoughts and prayers coming 'Catters. Seamus |

They do that at times because it makes it easier to treat conditions and keep the vitals in line. Here's Seamus' message, again: Hi 'Catters. I got a call from Alaska Mike's wife Tawmmie letting me know that he's in critical condition in hospital in Anchorage. ( I don't know which hospital). He's been in since Monday with a herniated twisted intestine, and has been heavily sedated. The good news is that they took him off dialysis this morning, although he's still unconscious. Tawmmie asked me to post this so that prayers/good thoughts/positive vibes/healing light can be directed his way. When he comes out of sedation and can sit up, Tawmmie will bring his laptop in to him, so we can get all the gory details from Mike himself. OK, 'Catters, let's help him get well. Seamus I'm sure the sedation is just to keep him under while the incredibly painful event heals. I'm sure the twist has been addressed and the herniation resolved. The intervention must surely be over, and the healing underway. ~Susan |

The hospital staff (alaska regional critical care unit rm#12) is still keeping Mike sedated. They cut out the sedation completely for a while yesterday to see if he'd wake up. He didn't, so they put him back under completely and will try again later. I've got all my kids and grandkids up here with me this week taking good care of me and cooking weird food. Mike is doing as well as can be expected. As you all know, he got the twisted bowel, and there was a rupture. He has been on an intensive antibiotic regimen, and yesterday they reduced the level of antibiotics substantially. They are not too concerned over his not waking just yet. Seamus taught the kids how to log on to Mudcat, so presumably the posts will all be printed and read to the big galoot. Keep up the prayers and posts. I just got back from the hospital, (or as some of you say - from hospital) Mike had a good night. They're keeping him on dialysis cause it's just doing such a good job cleaning out his blood. They took him off the sedation medication yesterday morning and he doesn't want to wake up yet. Not to worry. John, his RN said they want to check his cognitive responses and then they they will put him back to sleep a few days longer. They need to make sure he can breathe completely on his own before they take him off the respirator. His skin is much better today, a bit more elasticity, not quite so turgid. I've just about lost my voice but i just need to make sure I'm drinking my water. My daughter Tina and her husband left to go home to Arizona last night. Tracy and Gayatri have to leave tonight back to Chicago. Mike's brother and sister leave Mon night back to Arizona and my son, Alex with wife and daughter have to leave Tuesday evening, Michigan. I think I'll go back to work Wed. I've used up a lot of leave that I was saving for our vacation. Oh well, I'll just have to use LWOP, I don't care. Still no finger squeezing. He lifts his arms, shrugs his shoulders, moves his legs. They have his ventilater set at only 700 (somethings) and most of his breaths are coming in at 1100 to 1500. That means he doesn't really need the machine anymore but they can't take the tube out till he really wakes up. He was off the kidney dialysis machine tonight. Kidneys AND bowles working great now. There doesn't appear to be any leakage and they will probably take the 4 drainage tubes out tomorrow. Another week in ICU then down to a regular room for a week or two. I talked with Tawmmie this evening. Mike continues to improve bit by bit - still very ill, but the doctors are feeling more and more encouraged. He's off dialysis now, and his kidneys are working on their own, which is very good. He opens his eyes when he's asked to, but there's no real response or recognition yet. Tawwmie thinks that's probably because he's on a heavy dose of morphine right now. He's still on a respirator, because he needs to fully conscious and responsive before it can be removed. Worked half the day and was doing just fine. Then kinda suddenly I started to get confused. Then I had no memory except of the people around me, crying profusely. My supervisor, Jenn, was trying to help out with the memory and called my daughter Lori. She came over and had to walk me through the last 9 days. I had absolutely no memory of it all. I tried to get up and my legs collapsed. Sat for awhile longer. Then collapsed again walking down the hallway. They called 911, yep, my co-workers were a bit scared. Well these two really cute guys took my blood pressure, 214 over 100+. A tad high so they suggested I go over to the emergency room to be checked out. Lori and Jenn drove me over. BP still high but the doctor said everything else was ok. He gave me some half tablets to take before bedtime. He also suggested I have my BP checked every day for awhile and let my primary Dr know. I feel good now but still get quite veklempt alot. I miss my man. We're heading over there in a few minutes. They are going to try to take him off the ventilator today. :) Keep up the positive vibes. We were talking and the subject came up and he whispered, "I'm tough". I just know he's going to be moved out of CCU in a few days. I helped the nurse, Pedro, take the catheter from his neck that was a direct line to his heart. Jacqui from Maine, thank you so much for the scarf. It is really beautiful and I wore it today. Today was our first day of snow, it's been snowing all day. I'm better too today. Blood pressure down to 147/96. My doctor wants me to come in for a check up. Will do. Keep the thoughts coming. I read about your collapse at work and it sounded very familiar to me. A few years ago, before I went in to treatment for Chronic Pain management, I was severely sleep deprived as you must have been. Sometimes, when sleep deprivation goes beyond a few days and into weeks, you can have some odd symptons such as you did. It can be very disconcerting to those around you and even doctors can mistake it for onset of a mental illness or onset of a numer of physical conditions. When it happened to me, my lood pressure would sometimes and inexplicaly get so high I thought I was having a heart attack. The good thing is, your doc gave you something for it, you seemed to have gotten some sleep and are back on track. Mike is doing better and in time, both of you will be fine. Just remember that you need to take care of your own self too so that you can be in tip top shape to care for Mike when he comes home. So, don't forget to eat and sleep! Sounds silly but those are two things spouses and family members neglect when a loved one is critically ill. When I am so stressed that I cannot sleep, I listen to a special cassette tape I made when going thru biofeedback training. My instructor told me to choose music that I knew note for note and that I found soothing. He said the familiarity was important because it enables you to not have to actively listen. I chose a few Roger Eno compositions that I have always loved. I made a 45 minute continious tape of them back to back which is more than enough. I just put earbuds in, switch it on, put a lavender eye-pollow over my eyes (the slight weight seems to help), lay down and then go into my biofeedack routine. You don't need to really have a routine but if you do, it works faster. Within 6 to 10 minutes, my blood pressure and pulse drop significantly and I either drift into sleep or in to a meditative state. Using the tape works for lowering pain too. You may not need to come up with a sleep aid such as I've described but there it is in case you do. At least your doctor is aware that it was a prolem and will likely be supportive if you need help in the future. Take care and keep us posted on Mike's progress. We are holding you oth in our hearts. |

When I did my hospital chaplaincy we were always encouraged when the patients started to get grumpy. If they're annoyed at their nurse, doctor, etc., it's usually because they're annoyed at the illness, and now have the energy to combat it emotionally as well as physically. And Tawmmie - remember to eat, even when you're not hungry, and sleep as best you can. Things will get stressful anew when he gets home, and you need to be rested. I was put under for 12 days & Mike sounds typical of what happens when one finially comes slowly out of it. He's probably had some strange dreams that'll take a while to remember & he'll most likely have things backwards & upside down for a short while too but he'll be none the worst for it & he'll probably find a lot of writing material too. Those will be some strange songs. When he's up see that he streches, the big stiff has been vertical for too long. Do treat yourself often & rest up, it's a tough go for the care giver. As I gather, this is common, but it sure is disconcerting. Now he is in a dungeon being held captive by the lady who runs the hospital. Until I got there tonight after the Bill Stains concert, he would not allow the nurses to touch him, much less take a blood sample, or blood pressure. They all seemed scared of him. I went downhill quickly after entering the hospital and as a pain killer during diagnosis was given "Versed," the drug of choice nowadays. Turns out I am allergic to it and became combative and exceedingly violent. This was a rare reaction. The main vascular Doc came out and was obviously fearful asking my wife if I was a violent man. Karen was dumbfounded...like Mike, I'm a big Teddy Bear...but something triggered the reaction. Months later when I went to see that Doc at his office, he kept his distance as if he still wasn't sure about me. POINT IS----Many times the combinations of drugs used in serious cases or sometimes even just one drug during a specific time period can cause some strange problems. I'm sure they are looking at him carefully and keeping the good vitals but don't be afraid to ask them what they think is causing the abnormal reactions. It's easy to feel such gratitude to those working with Mike and saving his life that you hate to bother them or make them feel you don't trust them. But don't be afraid to ask when things aren't quite right. I have loved most of my Docs but they too are simply human......and the best ones never feel that "M.D." stands for Major Deity. Spaw |

He became uncooperative at times because of this -- and an NG tube, an IV into his neck, and other things were, to say the least, uncomfortable. Maybe Mike isn't hallucinating -- maybe he's extremely uncomfortable, not quite in touch yet, and feels like a he's been captured. |

Tawmmie -- I'll add my 2 cents worth, too, on the necessity of taking care of yourself. It's going to take you awhile to recover from the stress level -- even after Mike is up and back to whatever passes for normal. (I'm not sure I know any normal people...) The advice I usually give in these situations can be summed up in one word -- "peanut butter cheese crackers" (well, one thought, at least). Good to carry in the car for when you find yourself on the way home from the hospital and it occurs to you that you've forgotten to eat all day. Worrying about your darlin' and keeping the family's body & soul together takes its toll. Now that Mike's on the mend, we certainly don't need you getting sick. It seems that he has an infection where guys don't want one. I left him a few minutes ago high on demerol and getting ready for sleep. He will have a minor surgery in the morning for this new infection. He is still very weak, can walk tho, once around the nurse's station and he's exhausted. They've got something called a VAC hooked up to his abdominal wound. They cut a filter/sponge to fit, then make it airtight and hook up a vac. This only gets changed Mon, Wed, Fri. Less discomfort for Mike than the twice daily bandage changing. This sucks out any drainage and quickens the healing process. He's talking coming home sometime next week. Whee. Can't wait to get my man home. Thank you for refreshing this thread. I came on yesterday to post and it was gone. :( Of course I didn't know how to find it. In July, I had gastric bypass surgery to overcome the health problems of being a "jolly giant". My weight loss was coming along great, but I began to experience some problems in September. On October 16th, I drove myself to the emergency room because I was feeling a bit lousy and wanted to see if anything was really wrong. After arriving at the ER, I was quickly diagnosed as being a "sick SOB" and whisked off to surgery. The doctors determined that the gastric bypass surgery had come unravelled. I had burst the surgical connections where my stomach reattaches to my intestines and several liters of undigested food, gastric fluids and bowel contents were released into my abdominal cavity. Everything was infected, parts of my gut already contained dead tissue, and I was on the very fine edge of death. No one knows how I was able to drive myself to the hospital in the condition I was in. For the next 10 days I was enjoying a magnificent coma. I was kidnapped by the North Koreans, got into trouble with the authorities in Caracas, Venezuela, and was tortured (hung upside down in the hold of a ship). I don't recall why all these things happened, but you should know that I was victorious in all actions. As I started to come out of my coma, even more wonderful events occurred. HBO offered me a multi-concert performance contract to be televised and syndicated. I was a bit confused by all this interest in my music since I was unable to sing or play or even keep my bowels contained, but I gladly accepted the offer. For the next week or so I happily told everyone about my HBO deal until somebody finally told me that I was halucinating. Then I got depressed. But its hard to stay depressed with all the miraculous drugs available in modern hospitals these days. As reality fought its way back into my brain, I gradually came to realize what had happened to me and so began my slow and painful recuperation. I worked hard with the physical therapists to learn how to walk again, I started doing crossword puzzles and sudokus to improve my brain function and I redoubled my efforts to do what ever needed to be done to leave the hospital. Now I am finally home. Its 4:00 am and I can't get to sleep, but I'm feeling nearly like my old self again. When I arrived home, I read through this thread and was overwhelmed by the love and caring that you all have shared. I cannot thank you enough for the help you provided to Tawmmie during these dark days. I was too far gone to help in her suffering, but you were there to give her the support she needed. You are truly great friends. My love and sincere appreciation go out to each of you. "Bust a gut" is only an expression, not a command. When someone says to you, "I nearly bust a gut laughing" it means that they laughed hard and long. If your boss says, "I want you to bust a gut getting this done" it means to really work on something. It do NOT mean to literally bust a gut. In the future, don't take everything so literally, okay? I'm still on crutches, but I'm working out on my excercise bike and my legs are getting stronger each day. My hands are still shaky which makes it hard to type but I'm following the physical therapist's instructions and I'm sure things will steady up as time goes by. All in all I'm still in pretty sad shape, but each day gets better. As for the vaccuming of manly parts, let me explain. There is a wonderful invention called a wound vac that applies negative pressure to an open wound in order to increase the speed of recovery. I've had 3 surguries to remove infected tissue from my right side "manly" part and the wound vac is keeping it sterile and helping it heal. So go ahead Mick, give it your best shot. I can hardly wait to hear what you come up with. I've got to touch bases with my employer tommorow and see what they will require before I can come back to work. I'm thinking at least 4-6 weeks before I can perform my duties again. I've still got plenty of leave time so the paychecks will keep coming in. I hope all of you are having a great November. The Inside Story I was reading in a paper that was wrapped around the cheese How the miracles of med'cine have become realities; How women wanting babies can obtain them by the dozen From the local doctor's cold-room... all conveniently frozen. And I must confess the notion left me feeling rather cold, For I much preferred the method that we used in days of old. But the skillful city surgeon and his art must surely pale When you see the stockmen operate out in the post and rail; Stitching up dog-ravaged wethers, and a mulga stick for breaks, While the kids still have their ear lopped to survive the bite of snakes; Shot-gun dentists, cures with castor oil, I guess I've seen the lot, And the drastic use of stock-knives to control the barcoo rot. I pointed out this very fact last christmas on the phone To a mate of mine, Ken Cooper, who was working down near Scone; And he told me of an accident... the solemn truth, he swore (In the land of cornstalk promises, that matters any more? But Ken lived in Queensland, and that's good enough for me, So I reckon he's the barnard of the outback surgery). Ken was working on a fence-line with a bloke called Slogger Brown; He was running out the wire while his mate was cutting down. A mob of sheep stood waiting for the foliage to land... when a crooked Branch jumped back, and knocked the chain-saw from his hand! Oh, god! it was a shocking sight to turn your limbs to jelly... The whirring blade came down across the bushman's hairy belly! Ken told me all the details, but my tears were soon in flood For the ear-piece of the telephone was slowly oozing blood... But, before he grabbed the throttle, and could get the thing controlled, His mate... his sole companion... was completely disembowelled; And it wasn't just a matter of where this or that part fits... His whole internal mechanism was chopped in little bits! My friend had been a butcher when he worked the Queensland scene; A lot of 'reverse surgery'... if you know what I mean He knew it would be seconds before Slogger breathed his last So he had to do some surgery, and do it bloody fast! He grabbed a ewe around the throat and slit its nether hide... He hauled the streaming entrails out, and pushed them all inside. Though he lacked finesse and finish, he was long on common sense, For he drew the gash together with some staples from the fence; And joining veins and sinews is quite simple when you know how A bit of gum-tree gumption... and a twitch from Cobb & Co What's it matter in a stomach... upside down or front to back? That VAC works a champ doesn't it? But ya' know, since you're home now maybe you ought to try some magnetic healing. I know you've seen the ads for the bracelets and such, even a magnetic bra out there. I never could see it myself but then Cletus, Paw, Buford, and the Reg Boys got an idea for a "magnetic cure" and one thing led to another. I've told this story before but in case you might be thinking of alternative therapies here's some good info on magnetic healing! Paw's flattulence when combined with his passion for 'shine and hot wings used to be a big problem for him whenever his 'roids would flare up....so to speak...and it got to the point that the little rubber donut pillows and Preparation H just weren't doing the job anymore. Clete's 6th wife was into all the weird and wacky cures so Cletus was always coming to Paw with his suggestions that he'd heard from her. When Cletus told Paw about acupuncture, he disappeared for about two weeks and I'll be damned if anyone could find him. The Reg Boys too had their share of wacky cures for everything from the Great White North of Canada, but most of them involved bear grease and other vile and foamy liquids. Then it happened. The whole lot of them were watching TV down in my den one night when I couldn't seem to get them homeward bound. That happened way too often back then. Anyway, they had been subjected to at least nine hours of infomercials while they slugged down Iron City. I had learned from experience to unplug the phone and hide my credit cards on these nights which only took place when Karen was gone. I'm still paying for that quonset hut in the Aleutian Islands and I have the complete collection of Pan Flute Favorites but I have learned......albeit slowly. I think the one that finally got me was the "Great Michigan Getaway Weekend" which they bought and gave to Karen and I for an anniversary present. It was a month before I found out that they had billed it to my Visa and when we went for "rest and relaxation" in beautiful Michigan, it turned out to be clapped out motel run by a Pakistani in downtown Flint, just across from a closed GM factory. I guess it was about 5:30 AM when Cletus woke me up and said they had the cure for Paw's hemorrhoids. This was more than I wanted or needed to know at 5:30 so after verifying that it wouldn't cost me anything, I said have at it and went back to sleep. When I woke up about 7 I had one of those vague feelings of dread. You know what I mean? Nothing was wrong that I could think of and yet I just felt the world was going to come after me that day. It turned out to be Old Man Rafferty instead....but I'll come to that. The "boys" arrived back at my place about noon having already left when I woke at 7. They were lugging some huge electric motors into my garage and looking about for tools when I walked in and asked what the hell was going on. Cletus then launched into their "cure" and the reasoning behind it. It seems they had watched an infomercial about the "healing power of magnetism" and saw immediately that this was the way to fix Paw's 'roids. Slowly it all began to come together for me and I began to wonder how in the hell these guys could even remember how to breathe! In any case, they'd picked up the motors from out back of Bernie's Electrical Supply and were now going to remove the large magnets inside. They idea was to cut a slit in Paw's rubber donut, insert the magnets, and then duct tape the thing back together. I noticed that Buford had an old jockstrap (with cup) that they evidently were going to use to strap the magnets to Paw's ass, again using liberal amounts of duct tape. Listening to Cletus explain all of this and their newfound theory made me begin to question my own existence, as though I really didn't exist in the world I had come to know, but was simply a bit player in a leftover Rod Serling story. Things started going downhill pretty quickly as the magnets were removed and now were flying across my garage, affixing themselves to various steel things....like my van, my lawnmower, my golf clubs, and a little steel reinforced concrete rabbit that someone had once given us as a joke. I figured that I was going to be better off if they'd finish up somewhere else so I suggested they take all the stuff and head for the pleasant little roadside picnic area on the edge of the village where they could finish rigging Paw up and with any luck, I'd never know anything more about it. After removing the magnets, scratching the hell out of my van, breaking off the head of a 5 iron and the left ear of the rabbit, they left. The picnic area was only about a half mile off, just a bit down Rt.664 and I told them to let me know how it all worked out. Curiosity is a terrible thing sometimes and about an hour later I grabbed my Weimaraner and his leash and set out as though I were just walking the dog. As I turned on 664 I saw the Boys all walking towards me from the little picnic grove. Paw's ass seemed to be a bit large and he was walking funny, but from a distance I could tell they must have done a good job circling his ass in magnets because outside of a slight limp and a big bulge at the rear of his bibs, Paw looked pretty normal. Then it happened. Trailing the others, Paw walked past Old Man Rafferty's mailbox, a new heavy duty steel one to foil the kids with cars and bats. He first slowed, stopped, then flew backwards and before you could say "dumbfuck" he was hanging from his ass on the mailbox. Ol' Man Rafferty was washing his aging Electra deuce and a quarter and looked up to see what was happening. By that time, Cletus, Buford, and the Reg Boys all were tugging on either Paw or Rafferty's mailbox and though they got him off the mailbox was smashed in and the pole was a goner. Well I tell you, Rafferty came flying down the drive, gravel spitting up from his shoes, and swearing a blue streak. Paw was laying about 10 foot up the drive where he'd landed after the force of being ripped from the mailbox sent him sailing through the air. Rafferty bent over him and started yelling in his face and Paw was trying to stand up but being weighed down by the Magnetic Ass-Healing Ring. I got up there and tried to get Rafferty to calm down some as the others stood around looking bewildered. Rafferty started blaming me for allowing such "dumbass shitkickers" to stay here and how I should let them rot somewhere else. Before he could say another word, things continued to deteriorate. Paw had gotten to his feet about 15 feet from the Buick and there was a loud clanging thump as one of the hubcaps flew off and affixed itself to Paw's rump. Rafferty grabbed the hubcap and started pulling for all he was worth swinging Paw round and round in a circle. The hubcap folded and broke loose and Paw landed by the side of the road while Rafferty began to rage about his rump-sprung hubcap and twisted mailbox. I got out my checkbook and with a stern look to Cletus asked how much this would cost to keep from calling the police. The sight of my checkbook calmed Rafferty down and my Weimaraner had gone over to the side of the road and was licking Paw's face. Rafferty calculated a sum which I figured was enough to buy a new set of tires and an exhaust system for the Buick and build a brick mailbox, while forcing me nearer to bankruptcy. Cletus and the rest were circled around me as I handed Rafferty the check and when I turned to go, I saw Paw had gotten to his feet again and was bent over stroking Jaeger's head. The dog has always had a soft spot for Paw and when I whistled for him he reluctantly came back up the drive. Bending over to pick up his leash, I heard Cletus say, "Aw Sheeitt!" Right then I couldn't imagine how things could get worse, but I looked up just in time to see Paw lifted from his feet and his ass attach to the exhaust stack of a passing Peterbilt. I watched as the truck roared off, Paw flailing around and in a blind spot where the driver couldn't see him, and the dumbass Reg boys waving "bye-bye" as the Pete rounded a curve down by the Hopewell place. We found Paw at the truckstop at Rt.37 and I-70 where the driver had stopped for fuel. When we arrived, the Magnetic Ass-Healing Ring was nowhere to be seen and Paw was sitting on a bag of ice trying to cool the burns from riding 27 miles on an exhaust stack. But I tell you what.....Perhaps it was the scar tissue from the burns that did it, but Paw hasn't had trouble with 'roids since then. Maybe there is something to the power of magnetism.....................Might work for ya' Mike! Spaw |

'Catter khandu got me onto it and helped out a lot. Here it is: Khandu is indeed Mississippi born and bred. Matter of fact he comes from the same county where the infamous Tallahatchie Bridge is located and provided me with some details when I was researching the song which was originally done many years ago by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. We've had a number of threads discussing them around here. Quite a history! You may not be familiar with this part of their story, but the infamous '60's song by Bobbi Gentry, "Ode to Billie Joe," is directly linked to the Jubilee Singers. The story of Billie Joe is based in truth but of course "stylized" to some degree. It is an old story, dating back to the the late '40's when the only daughter of John Hatch, a Mississippi Klansman of some note, was in love with the first black attorney in the state of Mississippi. Jubilee Simmons was the grandson of slaves and his parents had named him Jubilee because they had both been members of the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers, where they had actually first met and fallen in love. He had gone to law school at the University of Chicago and returned to his family's home state of Mississippi, taking up residence in Carroll county in 1948. Klansman John Hatch's daughter was known to be a bit wild and young Kelli had already incurred her father's wrath on numerous occasions. Kelli was living with two other 22 year old women in the small town of Campton, Mississippi when she met and began dating Simmons. Her father learned of it a few weeks later and came into town drunk with some Klan buddies to hunt down and kill Simmons. Simmons law offices were across from the county courthouse and through an open window he could hear the drunken invectives hurled his way from across the square. He slipped out a back door and went to Kelli's house to take her away and save them both from the murderous rancor of her father and his equally violent "brethren." Not finding Jubilee in his office the Klansmen split up to search for him and John Hatch went to his daughter's, presumably to beat her or possibly (and probably) worse. He arrived before the pair had left and headed in the back porch door adjoining the kitchen. Seeing him coming, Simmons grabbed a kitchen knife and jumped atop the counter and then onto the top of the refrigerator that stood by the door. As John Hatch passed, he didn't notice Simmons who then jumped him safely from behind and in the ensuing struggle, Hatch was stabbed with the knife. The lovers bagged his body and threw it off the bridge on their way out of town. They were on their way to Chicago when they were arrested in Clarksville, Tennessee and returned for trial in Mississippi. Jubilee represented both and thanks to the testimony of one of the roommates and Mrs. Hatch, the wife of the deceased and Kelli's mother, who had suffered abuse for years at the hands of her husband, both were acquitted and moved to Chicago where he established a moderately successful practice on the south side. The original song told the story as it was, but owing to legal considerations, the Gentry version was done instead. The original was titled, "The Day that Jubilee the Barrister Jumped Off of Kelli Hatch's Fridge." Sorry Spaw |

Well, of course not. But, my uncle did drop off a flat of Bud as a thank you for a favour I did for him when he was sick and couldn't tend to one of his apartment buildings. I fixed some plumbing in the middle of the night. And replaced the faulty panel ground on the entrance, which might be what caused the water heater breaker to fry when... hey.. $40 of Bud for a two hundred dollar job? The cheap bastard! Anyway, I might get back on the wagon after I get off the wagon. Just hope the plumbing holds toninght. |

I have been most impressed at your final positive attitude and your earlier stoic take on the whole sordid mess. And I am cheering from the sidelines /albeit Australian ones and hoping that you will return triumphantly to the Getaway next year. I share a little of your angst. I merely fell down a flight of stairs in my duplex by tripping over some laundry on the stairs. As a surgeon put it, better your arm than your head. I have to differ! The broken wrist has been given a plate & seems OK but the elbow has had 3 seperate operations (the last 2 totalled 7.5 hour). So now I have 6 more days till I go back to the surgeon and find out if third time the bones have healed. I can cope with the months of physio once I get the all clear (famous last words) but if there is more surgury to come, followed by the weeks of healing after that I'm not sure that I can cope. I don't want any more aenesthetics, I don't want that endless wait to be taken to theatre and I'm tired of reconstructing myself as the ethet wears off. So think of me as I have of you on Wed 6th when I will find if the elbow has been fixed or wqhether the surgeon is still completing his training at the expense of my elbow. And, in case you are wondering, I am self-employed (software testing) and no one is jumping up & down to secure a one armed man. Enough bleeding - Mike, get very well and continue to be my example!! It was really smashed, and the initial reaction I got from the first doctor who saw it ("What a mess - it will never be the same again!") did nothing to inspire confidence. It took three operations, lots of angst and lots of physio before it came good - after about 2 years. I was lucky to have an excellent hand surgeon though, and it's back to 95% perfect, which is near enough - it functions so well that I just don't think about it any more. Don't get discouraged. You may feel like it's too much to cope with at times, but you will cope, and eventually you will get to a stage where you can look back at it and realise that you did cope, and you are stronger for it. I think it's like that for anybody who has been through serious illness or injury. You are more aware of your mortality, but you grow from it. Whereabouts in Oz are you? I'm in Sydney. |

More anesthesia, more nurses poking and prodding, more pain and a longer recovery. I am hoping the wound is still clean. I am not a major player here to any extent but rather a guy who fell in love with folk music in the 60's and never lost the joy it gave. My daughter forbade me to sing in her presence when she was 15 but has inherited the love of the genre (& her old man as long as he doesn't sing. So my contributions are mainly tall tales & true from the Melbourne scene in Australia, with particular references to the new & old Troubadore which ran from 1979 thru to 1990. I was content to grab a table and either appreciate people I knew & loved or to listen to the out of town guests who are increasingly appearing. Wonderful things happened in those days - John Denver played a warm up gig the night before he opened in a rather swish venue . It was supposed to be about 25 minutes & it filled a 90 minute & still missed the end. We all just cheered & passed up the red wine!! John took a deep breathe & remarked that he would never drink red wine & perform again. Goanna, one of our finest folk rock groups, booked the stage at the Troubadore for an anniversary concert. Well, it happened except that the key members of "Daddy Cool" & "Skyhooks" - the two hottest bands in town - joined them on stage for the most incredible performance. There are a few bootlegs around of this - my advice is to sell mother-in-law and all female siblings to get hold of a good copy! There is no better version of "The Times They Are A Changing! There were other great moments, Joe Dolce's Shut up yer face debuted here & went on to win the talent quest and every thing else. Bogle, Mike McCellan & Doug Ashdown ruled the roost for several years. Rarely did they perform covers - Bogle's Lochkeeper cover and subsequent tribute to Stan Rogers 'Free In The Harbour" is one example and of course Mike McCellans Mr Bo Jangles (courtesy of Jerry Jeff Walker) qualified. The thing I have to say tonight is that I have felt the arms of the catters closing round me and have been strengthened by that love. I was not aware that the serious members of the Cat had noticed me, yet alone cared for me and had placed a value on my small number of posts. I cannot add to the wealth of musical exertise or technique. However, I can comment on performancce & quality of voice & that can be my contribution for the support you gave me! Alaska Mike, Jenny O and Big Mick all have free accommodation in Melbourne. The designated room has a double bed - "I suggest you bring partners! And finally, thank you for lifting me from a despairing moment & bringing me back to the the manageability of the one day at a time life style Love to you all and PMs to follow Dave 0 y much younger daughter asked Doug Ashtown to sing a song that only existed in a bootleg I had grabbed. A class act - he said it was wonderful that 14 year old girls were calling for his obscure songs, and so Boot Hill continued to live. ' |

This Mudcat mob is one of the most caring and generous groups I have ever been fortunate enough to be part of. Whenever one of us (I include you) shares their joy or sadness there is always an out pouring of support from fellow members. I have seen this many times. One piece of completely good news to pass on. My deeply beloved daughter (currently living in England - Exeter) gave birth to my 1st grandchild on Monday morning my time. Max is feeding greedily, setting new records for soiled nappies and is very keen on being cuddled to sleep rather than being put down! They are all well. So life does go on. Jenny, I got the giggles over your fantasies re the double bed. If you do all come I'll find a way because such a gathering would be too too good to let logistics get in the way!!! And Mike, let's hope there is a song growing through winter that blooms next spring. Over a certain age, popular wisdom says 'Never waste a hard on". Don't you waste the prickling of your creative streak! And Mick, I don't know if your papers cover Aussie politics much but the Labour Party - the traditional voice of the working man - is in the process of tearing itself apart in search of a leader who can reverse the string of 4 losses over the last 4 elections. The incumbent is a big cheery bloke from the west who most people like but agree he doesn't have the cojones for the main job or the political savvy of John Howard. So he faces a party room vote Monday our time. We desperately need a new leader & a new team to confront & drive out a master of political expediency who sycophantically follows Bush in Iran (& the overall war on terror)and refuses to be accountable for stuffups & ripoffs by claiming he (&/or his cabinet) were never told what was going on! Twenty odd years ago, Eric Bogle sang up a storm at the Troubadore after Malcolm Fraser & John Howard lost the election to Bob Hawke. Eric remarked that he was euphoric & shattered. We had a Labour government but he had lost over 30% of his satirical repertory!!! We need another supreme sacrifice like that. By the way, Eric Bogle isn't the only writer of political satire to have got a lot of mileage from little johnnie. A friend of ours, John Dengate, also has quite a large part of his repertoire that relies on our prime miniscule for it to be relevant. However, he says he would gladly give that up to see the little *##!**#!** out of office. Mike, I'm a fan of the fast ripoff with bandages too. That way you don't have time to anticipate the pain or flinch too much. Bet you're glad that bit's over! Now if you do go to the 2008 Getaway, there's somewhat of a chance I might meet you. When I found out the date of it, I decided that I am going to try and save enough to come. I believe I'll be the first Ozcat to make it if I do. I don't have much money, so it's not going to be easy to do, but that's what I'm aiming for. It would be wonderful to meet so many of the Mudcatters I have only met online, and judging by how it has been when I have met the few 'catters that have made it here, I think it will be like meeting 'old friends'. Both of my wound vacuums have been removed along with my catheter. So I am now free of tubes and equipment attached to my body. I've developed another infection, but its minor and I have antibiotics to beat it down. My legs are stronger and I no longer need crutches to get around and I am driving myself around instead of being chauffered(sp). I am playing guitar and singing every day in order to increase my dexterity and breath control. I have written the beginnings of several new songs, but they are not yet ready to share. All in all, I am feeling quite good and looking forward to going on Seamuus Kennedy's Carribean cruise next month. Thanks again to all my friends at Mudcat for your continued support during this traumatic time. You have helped in making my recovery both speedy and enjoyable. Mike |

At least in the kilt you'll have a nice cooling breeze but it does make scratching more obvious - unless you can sneak in under the sporran! The relief of being tubeless and able to get up to pee when YOU want in a proper bit of porcelain is above and beyond any riches of the Orient. Take care my dear, don't let anything else happen to you for awhile because we're running out of itchy crotch stories! Tawmmie - now it's time for you to get the pampering... make sure you get every bit of room service you can on that cruise - and take a picture of him in that thong - we could all use a laugh!
