Subject: Dr Price on TV tonight From: Mick Tems Date: 19 Oct 06 - 01:21 PM Tune in to the last episode of The Pier (ITV Wales, 7.30-8pm tonight.) I was contacted by TV company Alfresco to ask my advice. The Gower dialect is rapidly disappearing, and Carole Powell, the Mumbles historian, was looking for the elusive someone who speaks "Gowerian" (or "the Mumbles dialect", as the Radio Times puts it.) I put Alfresco and Carole onto Eric Gibbs, who lives in Llangennith and who is 80 years old. I took Carole, her husband John and producer/director Sally Wheale to see and film Eric, and the results are there tonight. Eric is a delightful showman; he's a retired rural district councillor who just loves entertaining his audience. And the South Wales Song Archive is now up and running, thanks to trac (the all-Wales folk development organisation.) I started work on the Archive, which represents many years' collecting, but my severe stroke knocked things back. However, Sian Thomas, the director, and Blanche Rowen, the administrator, have been in touch with me and the Archive is ready to roll again. |
