Subject: Lyr Add: JUST A GIGOLO (Brammer/Casucci/Caesar)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 Oct 13 - 06:04 PM

Wikipedia says that the English version, with lyrics by Irving Caesar, was published in 1929, but all the libraries that have the sheet music say 1930 or '31, and I can't find any recordings earlier than 1931. The sheet music is not viewable online. Here's the most complete version I could find:

JUST A GIGOLO
[As recorded by Bing Crosby with Gus Arnheim and His Cocoanut Groove Orchestra, 1931:]

VERSE: 'Twas in a Paris cafe that first I found him.
He was a Frenchman, a hero of the war;
But war was over, and here's how peace had crowned him:
A few cheap medals to wear, and nothing more.
Now ev'ry night in the same cafe he shows up,
And as he strolls by, ladies hear him say:
"If you admire me, hire me,
A gigolo who knew a better day.

CHORUS: "Just a gigolo—
Ev'rywhere I go,
People know the part I'm playing:
Paid for ev'ry dance,
Selling each romance,
Ev'ry night some heart betraying.
There will come a day
Youth will pass away,
Then what will they say about me?
When the end comes, I know,
They'll say, "just a gigolo,"
As life goes on without me.

[As recorded by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra, 1931:]

CHORUS: Handsome gigolo,
Dressed up all for show,
What a wasted life you're leading!
Dancing till the dawn,
Youth and future gone,
Love will pass you by unheeding.
Just a solo part(?)
To the highest buyer(?),
Cast off when they tire tomorrow.
Friends may come, but they'll go,
Leaving handsome gigolo
A heart that breaks with sorrow.

[As recorded by Jaye P. Morgan, 1953:]

CHORUS: Just a gigolo—
Ev'rywhere you go,
People know the part you're playing:
Paid for ev'ry dance,
Selling each romance,
Ev'ry night some heart betraying.
There will come a day
Youth will pass away,
Then what will they say about you?
When the end comes I know,
They'll say, "just a gigolo,"
As life goes on without you.

Subject: Lyr Add: SCHÖNER GIGOLO, ARMER GIGOLO
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 17 Oct 13 - 05:53 PM

Since Joe Offer posted lyrics to JUST A GIGOLO in this thread, and it apparently hasn't been posted anywhere else at Mudcat, this seems like a good place to post the German lyrics. This seems to be the original song. Lyrics copied from
http://www.songtextemania.com/schoner_gigolo_songtext_max_raabe.html.
Wikipedia describes this song as depicting an Austrian war veteran:

SCHÖNER GIGOLO, ARMER GIGOLO
Words, Julius Brammer; music, Leonello Casucci, 1928.

Uniform passe, Liebchen sagt Adieu
Schöne Welt, du gingst in Fransen
Wenn das Herz dir auch bricht
Zeig ein lachendes Gesicht
Man zahlt und du mußt tanzen

[Several recordings can be heard on Spotify; there are also 2 recordings on YouTube: an early one here, sung by Dajos Béla and a more recent one here, sung by Grethe Waldor. The latter seems to have an extra verse that I don't have lyrics for.]

I remember a version of this being released by "Shane Fenton and The Fentones" circa 1961-2. Shane later changed his name and had a few number 1 hits in the UK in the mid 1970's. No prizes for giving the new name...

Subject: Lyr Add: I AIN'T GOT NOBODY (Woody Guthrie)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 11 Sep 09 - 07:23 AM

Copied from WoodyGuthrie.org:

I AIN'T GOT NOBODY
Woody Guthrie

I ain't got nobody. Ain't nobody got me.
I'm just like a little apple hangin' on a tree.
Don't nobody want me, I can plainly see.
I ain't got nobody and ain't nobody got me.

I ain't got nobody. Ain't nobody got me.
I'm just like a chunk of wood floatin' on the sea.
Don't nobody want me, I can plainly see.
I ain't got nobody and ain't nobody got me.

[Available on: Woody Guthrie, "This Land Is Your Land: Asch Recordings Volume 1". It's also on YouTube.]

Time to wheel this out again and see if anyone has any ideas.

As I said in the first post the Song I'm looking for begins:

I ain't got nobody
Ain't nobody got me
I'm just like a hunk of wood
hanging on a tree
Ain't nobody wants me
I can plainly see
I ain't got nobody
And there ain't nobody got me

I found these lyrics at Rabid Squirrel's Jazz Archive, and I can't vouch for the quality of the transcription. The song was recorded in 1953 by Jaye P. Morgan (hey - I thought gigolos were male). Also recorded by Bing Crosby, and I think Louis Prima also did a recording of this song.
In 1985, David Lee Roth recorded "Gigolo" in medley with the 1916 song, "I Ain't Got Nobody."

JUST A GIGOLO
(Irving Caesar and Leonello Casucchi)

I'm just a gigolo
Everywhere I go
People know the part I'm playing

Paid for every dance
Selling each romance
Every night some heart betraying

There will come a day
Youth will pass away
What will they say about me?

When the end comes, I know
They'll say just a(nother) gigolo
Life goes on without me

Subject: Lyr Add: I AIN'T GOT NOBODY MUCH
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Oct 06 - 06:15 PM

The Red Hot Jazz Archive has lots of playable recordings of I AIN'T GOT NOBODY (AND NOBODY CARES FOR ME). The oldest I could find was sung by Marion Harris, 1916. The title, attribution, and verses are different from those of the sheet music published above, but the chorus is nearly the same:

I AIN'T GOT NOBODY MUCH
(Roger Graham / Spencer Williams)

VERSE 1: There's a saying going all around this town, and I'm beginning to think it's true.
It's awful hard to love someone when they don't care about you.
I once had a sweetheart, just as good as any in this town,
But now I'm sad and lonely. He done turned me down.

CHORUS: I ain't got nobody. Nobody cares for me.
That's why I'm sad and lonely. Won't some sweet daddy take a chance with me?
I'll sing sweet love songs, all the time,
If you'll come and be my daddy mine.
I ain't got nobody. Nobody cares for me.

VERSE 2: If I only had someone that I could only call my own,
For I would marry them at first and take them to my home.
Ev'ry day I sigh and sigh. No happiness at all I find.
I have no one to love me, no one to possess my mind. CHORUS

* * *

The Red Hot Jazz Archive also lists these recordings of I AIN'T GOT NOBODY:

(Note: They have playable recordings of many, but not all, of these. Of those with playable recordings, some are instrumental, lacking a vocalist. Of those with a vocal part, some sing only the chorus, and some sing one verse plus a chorus.)

Marion Harris, 1916, 1920, and 1922.
Earl Fuller's Novelty Orchestra, 1918.
Ida Cox accompanied by Lovie Austin and her Blues Serenaders, 1925.

Sophie Tucker accompanied by Miff Mole's Molers, 1927.
Thomas Waller with Morris' Hot Babes, 1927.
The Dorsey Brothers Orchestra, 1928.
Earl Hines, 1928.
Sol Hoopii's Novelty Trio, 1928.
Dolly Kay, with Milt Shaw, 1928.
Ted Lewis and His Band, 1928
Emmett Miller accompanied by his Georgia Crackers, 1928 and 1936.

Thanks for the original lyrics Jim!

"I don't love nobody" by Lew Sully is a different song. Since the lyrics are similar and it's fast, I thought this was the song Bugsy wanted.

Anyone find Lew Sully's lyrics?

Subject: Lyr Add: I AIN'T GOT NOBODY (AND NOBODY CARES...)
From: Jim Dixon

From the sheet music at Indiana University Sheet Music Collections:

I AIN'T GOT NOBODY (AND NOBODY CARES FOR ME)
Words, David Young. Music, Charles Warfield. 1916

1. I had a sweetheart once I loved, and I was happy as could be,
But now he's gone and left me here for someone else, you see.
Some of these days he'll look for me, and I'll be far away,
And no more will I have to pine for the love I thought was mine.

CHORUS: 'Cause I ain't got nobody, and nobody cares for me.
(I want a little lovin' now and then.)
That's why I'm sad and lonely. Say, won't you take a chance with me?
'Cause I'll sing sweet songs all the time if you will be a pal of mine,
'Cause I ain't got nobody and nobody cares for me.

2. Say, did you ever feel lonesome, just as lonesome as could be,
About someone that you just knew had really mistreated you,
And you had that sad feeling that just made you awful blue,
And you could not get right somehow? That's the way I'm feeling now. CHORUS

Bugsy,

The song (I don't love Nobody)is a breakdown (played fast) and has similar lyrics to what you posted. It is not a slow song.

Listen to Doc watson's "Nothing to it" fro an instrumental version.

Thanks for the posts guys, but I think they're different songs to mine. This one is sung at a far brisker pace than yours and has a different tune.

I wish I could remember who it was I heard sing it years ago.

How about:
    I ain't got nobody
    Nobody cares for me.
    I'm so sad and lonely
Won't someone take a chance with me.
I'll sing you lovesongs all the time
If you'll by my sweet Valentine.
    Cause I ain't got nobody - and -
    Nobody cares for me.

Sometimes known as the Skeleton Song.

Hi,

I've just started a thread on this song: "Lyr Req: I Don't Love Nobody."

It was written in 1896 by Lew Sully. It was a very popular song in the 1920's and was recorded by many old-tme bands like the Skillet Lickers.

There are several versions on-line that you can listen to, one's on Honkingduck.

Let me know if you need any more help. I have several lyric versions but I'd like to have more.
