Subject: RE: 'Grandpa' Jones birthday From: Gene Date: 21 Oct 06 - 07:20 PM Grandpa did the best job i ever heard on (Sweet Lips) aka The Battle Of King's Mountain, BAR NONE. Sweet Lips was a rifle, named for his girl in tennessee When Sweet Lips spoke, [the chains that bound us broke ?] In his earlier years Grandpa was a tremendous performer. kinda reminds me of 2 characters on Gunsmoke Festus Hagan and Shug Fisher, playing cloddish roles but gifted members of the Sons Of The Pioneers.. |
Subject: RE: 'Grandpa' Jones birthday From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Oct 06 - 07:51 PM I loved Grandpa. The cowbell tunes were great with his wife Ramona. And his daughter Alisa is one helluva' fine Hammered Dulcimer player. Ramona was a great lover of trad music and they played a good bit on the folk circuit as well. I've linked an excellent obit for anyone who simply thought he was some country shitkicker. He was a fine musician and a great entertainer. The obit mentions how he got his first really good guitar and that guitar is on display at the Museum of Appalachia just north of Knoxville. NOT mentioned in the obit was his long friendship with David "Stringbean" Akeman who many only knew from HEE-HAW but it was Akeman who preceded Earl Scruggs with Bill Monroe. Grandpa and String lived on facing hills and could wave at each other and visited almost every day. Akeman and his wife were killed in their home during a failed robbery attempt (long story) and it was Grandpa who found them. Some of his friends said that Grandpa was never quite the same after that. Anyway......Grandpa Jones was something special. Spaw |
