Here is what critics are saying so far at Rotten Tomatoes.

The film is directed by American documentary filmmaker extraordinaire, Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, American Dreams).

Here is a very good interview of the Chicks as they kicked off their Aussie tour this month, including a lot of talk about "The Incident":

Dixie Chicks Taking Kicks

There is just TONS of great Dixie Chicks videos at YouTube, from the making of "Home" to their performance of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl, to all those great "Goodbye Earl" videos!

Bill O'Reilly vs the Dixie Chicks is a video of the Chicks on Letterman performing "Not Ready to Make Nice" juxtaposed against a bunch of clips.

And a very interesting series of video of the Dixie Chicks on Howard Stern (it's in 7 parts):

The Dixie Chicks doc is showing as part of the London Film Festival. Its being shown twice. First at the Odeon Leicester Square on Wednesday 25 October 1830 and then the following afternoon at 1330 at the National Film theatre near Waterloo Bridge. The fact that this film is being shown at the festival will probably increase its chances of getting distributed over here but it may take some time. Also being a doc rather than a feature film it may not be shown at mainstream cinemas. However as the group have become something of a cause celebre I may be wrong.

You can see if there are any tickets left on the festivals website.
WWW.lff.org.uk or ring the National Film theatre box office or the Odeon Liecester square.

Anyway Peta Webb and I are going to see it on Thursday. Will let you know what we think..

Politics rule the media, once again:

NBC rejects ad for Dixie Chicks film

10/28/2006
The ad includes footage of the Iraq War, gives a brief background on Maines' 2003 comment made onstage in London, and shows Maines dismissing as "dumb'' a comment made by Bush about the Dixie Chicks.

The Dixie Chicks are again at the centre of a controversy over the limits of voicing a controversial opinion.

A film company said Friday that NBC would not accept an advertisement for "Shut Up & Sing,'' a movie about the fuss created by Dixie Chick Natalie Maines' comment that she was ashamed President George W. Bush was a fellow Texan. The network suggested the complaint may be a publicity stunt.

The movie opens this weekend in New York and Los Angeles, and network affiliates in both those cities have run ads promoting it, according to the Weinstein Co., which is distributing the film.

The problem arose when the Weinstein Co. began conversations with networks about buying ads to be shown nationally, in anticipation of later wider release of the film.

The ad includes footage of the Iraq War, gives a brief background on Maines' 2003 comment made onstage in London, and shows Maines dismissing as "dumb'' a comment made by Bush about the Dixie Chicks.

CBS has agreed to air the ad, a spokeswoman for the Weinstein Co. said. ABC and Fox have not given an answer while the CW and NBC rejected it. The film distributors said NBC explained it was because the ad disparaged Bush.

Who needs that stinking NBC (sent an e-mail the last time they pulled this BS) this is not the 1st time that they've refused money because they're right wing extremists & politicly basis. Love it when it's successful & they kick themselves in the ass for turning away good money. Same goes for Disney, too. If the DC's flick come around me I'm seeing it, if for no other reasons then for support & to make a statement.

A notice about a music-related movie, about a group that - although highly commercial and "pop" - might not be too far from "modern folk music", seems particularly appropriate "above the line".

Additional discussion about the particular political views probably would best be taken to the BS section. Right?

Val

So, if the music/artists are political, we move the thread to BS? Since when?

The NBC excuse not to air the ad is that it would be unfair (under their bogus FCC "fair to our side" doctrine) to air an ad critical of Bush, because that would require Bush to have to pay for an ad in order to respond.

As if. He has free access to the media 24/7. It is purely political partisanship that is driving NBC's decision. As to CW--they are just cowards.

I heard from someone who saw the NY premier last night, who said the quality of the concert footage is actually pretty decent for a documentary about free speech!

There will not be a moving of this thread to BS. It is music related. Period.

Welcome-- amigo, amigo.

That flaming leftist rag, the Wall St Journal, gave the movie a glowing review. A dismissive headline, but, if you read the review, definitely positive.

This is one I'll buy on DVD--I'll watch it many more times than once, and there are bound to be good extras.

And I may well contact GE and point out the flaw in the alleged NBC excuse.

Hey, what happened to "amigo, amigo?" Even a Guest is presumed innocent if it has the decency to actually use a handle.
Amigo posted this message twice, and was deleted:
