Well, I've recorded several workshops on Gaelic song/singing. I've also, with permission, a recent concert by two friends of mine - Vince Morash and James Crouse. Several other things like sessions and things. I've tried my Sony ECM-5 stereo mic in it, but it wasn't as sensitive as the built-in mics. HAve to check that.

It's really handy. I will have to try a line-in test next.

So far, I've used the R-09 for:

1) Recording tracks off old vinyl records (the big black things) to WAV files, to transfer to the computer and burn to CDs. Granted, I could do this without the Edirol, but I'd have to have my turntable set up near the computer and have specific software for the computer. It's simpler and more portable with the Edirol.

2) We've been recording some live gigs in MP3 format, by running a line from the tape out jacks on our PA head to the Edirol. We can record a whole set as one long MP3. You can listen to the playback, and sometimes you shudder, but you get a good idea what the audience is hearing, and what needs to be corrected, either in your performance or your PA settings.

I think, in the future, I'll take it to a festival or two and see what kind of recordings I can get through the built-in mics.

I can also record all my favorite songs on a spare chip and use it like an iPod, if I wish.

Very flexible device.

Hi Dave,

I have used an Edirol R1 to record the singaround sessions at the Folk Club I run. That is The Wolf Folk Club at Wolferton in the County of Norfolk in the UK. We meet alternate Thursdays. We normally have between 30 to 36 performers most at a pretty high standard but we have beginners in the mix too.

I choose from the various recordings and make a selection of them available on the club's web page which you can find at www.norfolkfolk.co.uk/Wolferton.htm

You can go there and hear the files if you want. If there are no files there it will be because the next lot is in the process of being uploaded. You will not be able to judge the recording quality of the R1 from what you hear as we keep the recording resolution pretty low so that they are not worth ripping off.

This is all done with the permission of the performers who sign a document for me permitting this to be done so there is no comeback from aggrieved parties. No signature = no exposure and no accusations.
I make no money out of any part of this. Al done for love & enthusiasm.

Next weekend I will be taking part in the intermediate fiddle workshops by Dave Bing here in the UK and will be using the R1 to record the entire session and mastering it up in Wavelab. I do this with Dave's blessing as I provide copies not just for myself but for all who are on the course (and nobody else). Dave will get a copy too of course.

I am pretty pleased with the R1. It has its limitations but is just so portable, not like my Tascam 24 track digital recorder and condenser mics etc.

And, one day when I can afford one, I'll take one of these gizmos into the field and record frogs' music. And possibly a magpie or two carolling at breakfast. And then I'll go and record a novel tune or two at the occasional session.

I record our rehearsals from time to time-- our fun getting the music ready for our Saturday night service. Sometimes the service itself.

I also recorded the 5 candidates who came to our parish to be considered as our next Bishop. I thought I would surprise the fella who was elected, with all the nice things he said to us, when he comes to visit next week.

All of the talk on the current Tech:Edirol thread has me wondering about something...with so many folks talking about making field recordings, recording music sessions, festival workshops, etc, I wonder if it would be feasible to make a list of things people have recorded that they'd be willing to share with others?

For instance, Charley Noble, perhaps you have recorded some sea music singing sessions in the UK or here in the US that most of us would not have had the benefit of attending. I for one would love to hear those. Or festival workshops - how great it would be to hear a recording of a topic of interest from a festival workshop we could never have attended personally. Here's another: I've always wondered what a night at an English folk club sounds like, with local floor singers taking turns singing a song in the neighborhood pub. Undoubtedly, others here have recorded such things.

Would it be a) legal, and b) possible to make a listing here or elsewhere of things people have recorded that might be of interest to others? Of course, I'm talking about sharing these sound files strictly for personal use and not for any commercial purpose or gain.
