Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song from Captains Courageous From: Joe_F Date: 02 Jan 20 - 09:37 PM Back again. After quoting from "Wheat in the Ear", Kipling says "That made Harvey almost weep, though he could not tell why". We grownups can tell why: It's about a whaler not being able to see his wife thru a pregnancy. I'd sure like to hear the rest of it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song from Captains Courageous From: GUEST,Leandra Date: 23 Jan 16 - 01:55 AM Grew up watching this movie and loved it. Just showed it to my husband and little girl a bit ago. All I could catch was: ...he who had a daughter Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man Speaking in his native lingo He said, "Marry Bingo-Bingo" Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man He will bring you beans and sorrows Yes, I know about his morals Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man Bingo-Bingo came to woo her Brought a lot of presents to her Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man Then later Manuel sings: Capt. Cushman is a sailor But he should have been a tailor Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man And Harvey: Cushman might have been a grocer But a first-class seaman, no, sir Oh, what a terrible man Oh, what a terrible man Hope that helps! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song from Captains Courageous From: Joe_F Date: 04 Jun 15 - 06:00 PM Yes, those are the words in the book. But there must have been more verses, and a tune. An LP I have has a version, but it's mostly stolen from "Weevily Wheat", and the tune doesn't fit those words. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: song from Captains Courageous From: GUEST Date: 16 Oct 12 - 06:02 PM Once, Doc make some fish cakes and throw it away Next day no more fish come around boat to play. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. Said cabbage to fish cake that lay on one dish 'I beautiful cabbage you only a fish.' Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. There's a place in my heart for the one I love best, And I still keep her picture tattooed on my chest. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. There's a school of fish way down deep in the sea, Where the little fish study geography. They write on a slate and they read from a book, Learn to run with the bait and just leave them the hook. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. You'll be beleia by and by (beleia is big fish) With fins and a tail to help you sail, And maybe some wings to help you fly. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. Yea, ho, little fish, don't cry, don't cry. |

Subject: RE: Captains Courageous song lyrics From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 25 Oct 06 - 05:03 PM As far as I can see they aren't (the text is available online). There are also notes for the book available online, which seem to make a fair coverage of the songs referenced in the text (mostly Ch IV), but it's not mentioned. The only references seem to be tothe screenplay. IMDB has no music credits for the film. Mick |
Subject: RE: Captains Courageous song lyrics From: Artful Codger Date: 25 Oct 06 - 04:57 PM As this is a Kipling tale, and Kipling was fond of embedding verse and "songs" in his works, has anyone scanned a copy to see if the lyrics are in there? |

Subject: RE: Captains Courageous song lyrics From: Greg B Date: 25 Oct 06 - 02:29 PM Recall that they were using it while cutting bait (and fingers). You might look in the traditions that came out of the canneries, rather than from the ships. I wouldn't be surprised to find it there, along with some other treasures. They're fond of the movie at Mystic...might be worth querying the librarians there. Mary Kay Edwards is a veritable font of knowledge as well. If you can figure out where they did the research for the film, you probably can find the sources for the songs. Maybe a good, hard, look at the credits will help. I assume you own the DVD, like all good sea song singers should...it's on the MGM Classics label. |

Subject: Captains Courageous song lyrics From: Pirate of Cape Ann Date: 24 Oct 06 - 05:14 PM Try as I may, I can't access any source for the lyrics to a song used on the original Captains Courageous movie. I'm looking for the words to "Oh What a Terrible Man". I believe that this may be a "traditional" piece, possibly of Portuguese origin. The song is sung twice in the movie, once in its "traditional" wording where in Harvey puts in a third chorus to the disgust of the We're Here's crew and again as an insult to Captain Cushman in which Harvey's verse is accepted. The first run of the song starts out in the background, over shadowed by the ambient noises aboard the schooner. Only after two or three verses can I make out the crew singing: Oh what a terrible man, Oh what a terrible man. Speaking in his native lingo, He said Marry Bingo Bingo. Oh what a terrible man, Oh what a terrible man. Bingo Bingo tried to woo her. Brought a lot of presents to her. Oh what a terrible man, Oh what a terrible man. I am a member of the sea shanty group Three Sheets (to the Wind) in Gloucester MA associated with the Schooner Adventure and would love to have my group perform this piece. Any help would be a greatly appreaciated! PoCA |
