So after a gig a week back when I ran out of space on my mixer amp I have been out and bought a new PA.

The mixer a Peavey PV-14 USB has usb output to the laptop / PC.

Has anyone (at the risk of opening a big can of worms) any suggestions as to a good (not pricey) piece of software to make reasonable recordings.

If I was making a CD I would go to a studio, so this is good recordings of gigs, practices, checking sound harmonies etc. not for distribution or performance.

TIA

Andy

The USB from your mixer will just be a digital version of the stereo mix. So you don't need any multi-track software.
Audacity will record in stereo, and you'll never find anything cheaper. You can even edit and master a little.
Go with it unless and until you need to make a live album, then call your local Music Tech College, and ask them to sort it out for you.
We did Steve Harley's live album!
Cheers
Dave

Audacity is great! Another one is Goldwave. Goldave isn't totally free like Audacity but it's free trial gives you the full version, with many more bells and whistles than Audacity. The trial expires with the number of uses rather than a fixed time frame. Hint: Use Audacity whenever you can but when you need a bit extra switch to Goldwave.

For $100, you can get Steinberg's Cubase SE. Incredible power, MIDI integration, built-in effects, such as reverb, EQ, etc. The ability to use VST effects, of which some great ones can be downloaded free.
