Actually Jeff, it proves that only 24% of the people, regardless of gender, know how to eat corn properly.

Thanks for the reminder, Gargy. I compiled the results a few nights ago, but forgot to post them.

I started with a hypothesis that there was a gender disparity in the distribution of typewriter vs. lathe eaters, i.e., more men eating typewriter-style and more women eating lathe-style.

The data, however, showed the proportions to be virtally identical between the sexes.

Males were 62% typewriter, 24% lathe and 14% other.
Females were 64% typewriter, 24% lathe and 12% other.

Seems to invalidate my hypothesis. Oh well, it was a lot of fun.

Thanks again to everybody for playing along.

Jeff

I was expelled from the community garden. (Who would guess?)

My crime? Planting "raspberry Indian pop-corn." It found a promiscuous way into surrounding neighbor's hybrid "mellow-yellow," and "sweet-sunshine," and "white-sugar." Unfortunately, for them, their cobs were infested with occasional "darky kernals."

Unfortunately, for me, I had a few dozen extra "old-maids" than usual.

If it is not popped, its intended for hogs.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

JEFFyP Post your PAPER to this thread with references....if you dare....good-luck.

1. I'm a person of the female persuasion.
2. depends.

If it's corn on a stick, I tend to go round & round. If it's corn with a thingamabob on each end one of those nifty special corn on the cob dish thingies where I can have more butter to dip it in, I probably will chomp typewriter style--after taking off my glasses, & hopefully with a lovely soon to be butter spotted linen napkin tied round my neck!

Thanks KateG. The corn patch I planted was only about Five foot square and in a very windy spot. The seed packet made it sound too easy. Maybe I'll try a more shaded spot next season.
BTW, the terrier puppies loved chewing on the cobs. ;)

what we get in the stores now seems to be as sweet as fresh-picked

When I was in college, some mumble-memble years ago, they were beginning to select and breed for corn that had low levels of a particular enzyme that is the main cause of sugar to starch conversion after picking of corn.

It's amazing, though, how sweet even field corn is if fresh-picked at the right stage of growth.

terrier
corn is wind polinated, so if you want corn on your cobs you have to plant in in large squarish blocks rather than single rows. I found that even planting a 5 x 20 foot block gave rather poor results on the upwind side.

Male.

Typewriter style, 3 or 4 rows at a time from port to starboard.

I'm not sure what they've done to the corn but what we get in the stores now seems to be as sweet as fresh-picked. They probably have injected it with sugar, or maybe it's a new hybred involving genes spliced in from sugar beets.

I do hope this is serious research, which contributes at least a kernal of truth.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Male, I've been led to believe.

I eat typewriter style.   In fact, I've never (to my knowledge) known anyone who ate it round and round.

But it MUST BE VERY FRESHLY PICKED! The ideal is to start your boiling water, then run to the corn patch and pick and run it back to the water! It starts to lose flavor immediately when picked.

held in hands, started eating at one end & ate around, then moved down a bit & did same.

Then I removed my glasses as I was squirting corn juice all over my face.

I moved down a bit again & chewed around again, finally I cleaned up the omitted bits.

newly BBQd corn is YUMMY!! Tho I could have done with some butter.

Female last time I checked.

I start at one end and go around lathe style. I use a skewer or a fork in one end and my fingers steadying the other. I use an upwards motion to the cob, slicing the kernels off with my upper teeth. I occasionally pause to roll the cob in the melted butter on the plate.

Limpit, also female and the child of her mother, also uses the skewere and hand method, but will start in the middle and work outwards in a 'scatter gun' approach, the same method she uses for the butter.

We don't have cob corn very often.

M typewriter, usually three rows at a time.

Corn is wind pollinated. A very small patch often doesn't produce full ears. Small plantings tyupically do better if planted in hills or blocks rather than a couple long rows

In Oregon I grew my own corn and literally put a pot of water to heating while I went out to break off some ears. In Alaska where all sweet corn is flown or barged from 'down south' I don't bother. I haven't tasted corn on the cob in years.

Male, round the cob, from the left to the right end. I also use corn cob holders, and roll the ear over a stick of butter, rather than apply the butter with a knife. No salt or pepper.

The yellow corn from North Jersey was not that good this year, but the white corn from South Jersey was excellent.

Hey Bill......Me eating corn is not a pretty sight, or so I'm told. Yeah, the cob rotates downward with the upper teeth moving it along while the lowers scrape the cob clean. I seem to eat too fast and my lips don't seal well around the corn so you get the occasional squirt of fluid when the kernels pop. It also seems that this happens often enough that no one who knows me will sit anywhere's near close during the feeding.

It is hard to describe how much I love fresh sweet corn..........but you get the idea.

It's totally strange and pointless. Just my curiosity. I had noticed a gender difference among friends and family in the approach to eating corn on the cob and wanted a larger sample size. That's all. I won't identify the trend I noticed because I don't want to possibly skew the results any more than they would be skewed by the weird group I'm surveying.

Thanks for playing along folks!!! I'll report results in a few days, although the local results don't seem to be greatly reflected so far.

Jeff

Subject: BS: A Silly Survey about Corn (Maize)
From: jeffp

I've got something lighthearted I'd like to research a bit to check out a tendency I've noticed. I have two questions I'd like answered by folks who are willing:

1. What is your gender?

2. When you eat corn on the cob, do you eat across like a typewriter or round and round the cob? If you eat it at random, like someone I know, please specify that too.

Thanks a bunch.

Jeff
