Subject: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: GUEST Date: 30 Oct 06 - 04:27 PM While browsing the thread titled "So what is 'TRADITIONAL' Folk Music?" a nickel dropped. Some of the denizens of this list might be interested in the following recording. It is the latest release in the "Hammons Legacy" series. Maggie Hammons Parker, Songs, Sampler #1 However you define "traditional singer" Maggie, of Pocahontas County WV, is the real thing. For details goto http://www.morningstarfolkarts.com/product_info.php?products_id=173&osCsid=9a5dc774deb5cf6d3031799c7f6b89fb At the end of the year a 7 CD set of Maggie vocals will be released. The Sampler contains some of the Hammons Legacy Team's favorites from that set. FINE PRINT I am rather intimately associated with the "Hammons Legacy" series, but I do not benefit financially from that involvement. I recommend the CD because it is damn good. Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: DannyC Date: 31 Oct 06 - 08:05 AM Thanks for the link, Russ. Do you know these Hammons? My wife's mother is a Hammons from Lynch, KY. She's a coalminer's daughter. We've been meaning to get over to West Virginney and get a visit with these Hammons. My mother-in-law says they're kin (not to me o' course - I'd just drive the truck over and back with a promise to keep quiet.) |
Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: GUEST,Russ Date: 31 Oct 06 - 08:45 AM DannyC I didn't know the Hammonses. The people who made the recordings were good friends of the Hammonses. One if them, Dwight Diller, still lives in the Marlinton area. I am helping them produce the CDs. I grew up in Williamson, Mingo County, WV. My wife's family is from Whitesburg. |
Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: Ferrara Date: 31 Oct 06 - 12:24 PM Oh, Russ, thank you for the information! I have friends who live in Pocahontas County. I heard that Dwight was going to release all his recordings. So it is really going to happen! Well if I am very lucky I may eventually get the whole set, (Christmas hint for 2007), but think I will go for the sampler now. Wish you could see the happy smile on my face. This is something to look forward to. |
Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: GUEST,Russ Date: 31 Oct 06 - 01:11 PM Ferrara, Thank you for the postive feedback. It is truly appreciated. Our goal (The Hammons Legacy Team) is to make all of Dwight's and Wayne Howard's recordings available. Hopefully in this century. The process is a bit slow since it is an all-volunteer effort and there is a LOT of material. Maggie RULES! Russ |
Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: BanjoRay Date: 01 Nov 06 - 11:41 AM DannyC - I don't think you'll find any musical Hammons' left alive in Pocahontas County, WV. I know Maggie, Burl, Sherman, Edden and Lee have all left us, which is a great pity - these people were the real thing and had a large repertoire of songs, fiddle tunes, banjo tunes and stories, many of which were collected and recorded by Dwight Diller. Dwight has just released a book of tabs, with the assistance of some of his banjo students, with a fine collection of his photographs of the Hammons'. It's available from Elaine Diller's website Ray (who was talking to Dwight last weekend at Gainsborough UK.) |
Subject: RE: Maggie Hammons -Traditional Musician From: GUEST Date: 08 Feb 07 - 07:31 PM I am a Hammons living in Chico, CA. My father was Junior Hammons, born in Reneck, WV. His father was Jink Hammons, who married Lockie Meadow when they were teenagers. Do you know if we are related? Teresa Hammons Busby |
