Subject: Lyr Add: WORKING MAN (Rita MacNeil) From: GUEST,grantcockburn@scoopmail.com.au Date: 29 Dec 04 - 06:41 AM Spoken Introduction: This song is dedicated to my father, Dan McFee, who worked in the coal mines of Cape Breton. It's a working man I am, And I've been down underground, And I swear to God, if I ever see the sun, Or for any length of time, I can hold it in my mind, I never again will go down underground. At the age of sixteen years, He quarrels with his peers, Who vow they'll never see another one, In the dark recess of the mine, Where you age before your time, And the coal dust lies heavy on your lungs. It's a working man I am, And I've been down underground, And I swear to God, if I ever see the sun, Or for any length of time, I can hold it in my mind, I never again will go down underground. At the age of sixty-four, He'll greet you at the door, And he'll gently lead you by the arm, Through the dark recess of the mine, Oh, he'll take you back in time, And he'll tell you of the hardships that were his. It's a working man I am, And I've been down underground, And I swear to God, if I ever see the sun, Or for any length of time, I can hold it in my mind, I never again will go down underground. It's a working man I am, And I've been down underground, And I swear to God, if I ever see the sun, Or for any length of time, I can hold it in my mind, I never again will go down underground. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {G}It's a working man I am, And I've {C}been down un{G}derground, And I swear to God, if I ever see {D}the sun, {G}Or for any length of time, I can {C}hold it in my {G}mind, I never again will {D}go un{G}derground. |
Subject: Lyr Add: STRANGER TO THE SEASONS (Ralph McTell) From: Fliss Date: 30 Oct 04 - 07:21 PM stranger to the seasons by Ralph McTell A man without a job is a stranger to the seasons The April rain will soak you like the worst November brings And we're tired of the excuses and the carefully worded reasons Without Winter there's no Summer Without Autumn there's no Spring. When the factories close down the life bleeds from the town. Some politicians tells us, 'move and build another home', But weren't they voted in to lead us? No one said they had to feed us. If they'd get us back our jobs Then we would take care of our own. Chorus For a man without a job Is a stranger to the seasons No music to the cycle of the changes will he hear. Like a band without a drummer There's no Winter, Spring, or Summer There's no rhythm to the passing of the Months that make the year. Everyone is poorer for the millions Who keep growing Whose season stays at Autumn And whose only colour's grey Though we get by on the dole It feeds the body, starves the soul And stirs the bitterness that's growing In the ones who've been betrayed. Chorus Love It's a Working Man I am.. Pat from Cuckoo Oak sings it Fliss |

Subject: RE: working man's song From: Tim Jaques tjaques@netcom.ca Date: 14 Mar 99 - 06:43 PM "Working Man" as sung by Rita MacNeil is about coal miners in Cape Breton. Actually, I always liked that country and western one about the rich man doing the dancing while the poor man pays the band. C&W may not fit into your range for Saint Patrick's Day though.

Subject: RE: working man's song From: alison Date: 13 Mar 99 - 09:37 PM Hi again, Thanks for all of your help...... I am backing a fella who I don't usually play with for St Pat's and he gave me a list of songs which he does (and I am unfamiliar with)........ hence various threads... Baz gave me the one I was looking for earlier on "It's a working man I am." So, as far as I am concerned....... I've found the one I wanted... but don't let me stop you..... you're right there are heaps of good working songs out there.... And Happy St Pat's to you too. Slainte alison |
Subject: RE: working man's song From: Mick Lowe Date: 13 Mar 99 - 09:04 PM Alison, There's "millions" of working "persons" songs... apart from "Working Man" & "Paddy & the Barrel.. aka the Sick Note.. written by Pat Cooksey & performed by everyone under the sun including yours truly)... Just look at all the "fishing" songs.. e.g. Boys from Killybegs, 3 Score & Ten (very much an English song adopted by the Irish), Westering Home (a Scottish song adopted by the Irish)..The Old Polina ( A Scottish song adopted by the Canadians and then the Irish)... Or perhaps my favourite adoptee.. Dublin Jack of All Trades, claimed by everyone as their own, from Glasgow down to Dover. Or am I missing the point here and you were looking for songs with "work" in the title? I still think the best "work" song is "Gold watch blues" by Woody Guthrie I think... only ever heard it done by Donovan.. neither of which were Irish to my knowledge..LOL.. Have a great Paddy's Day by the way.. All the best Mick |
