Ewan MacColl wrote a lot of them and sang a lot more. Look up _The Essential Ewan MacColl Songbook_, and his recordings of folksongs.

The working man song was released by Fruher in 1987 from London by the BBc. As a one hit wonder import they were never heard from again.

There's also The Chemical Worker's Song by Ron Angel which is a corker to get them singing and is pretty nifty to sing as well.

"Working Man" as sung by Rita MacNeil is about coal miners in Cape Breton.

Actually, I always liked that country and western one about the rich man doing the dancing while the poor man pays the band. C&W may not fit into your range for Saint Patrick's Day though.

Thanks for all of your help...... I am backing a fella who I don't usually play with for St Pat's and he gave me a list of songs which he does (and I am unfamiliar with)........ hence various threads...

Baz gave me the one I was looking for earlier on "It's a working man I am."

So, as far as I am concerned....... I've found the one I wanted... but don't let me stop you..... you're right there are heaps of good working songs out there....

And Happy St Pat's to you too.

There's "millions" of working "persons" songs...
apart from "Working Man" & "Paddy & the Barrel.. aka the Sick Note.. written by Pat Cooksey & performed by everyone under the sun including yours truly)...
Just look at all the "fishing" songs.. e.g. Boys from Killybegs, 3 Score & Ten (very much an English song adopted by the Irish), Westering Home (a Scottish song adopted by the Irish)..The Old Polina ( A Scottish song adopted by the Canadians and then the Irish)...
Or perhaps my favourite adoptee.. Dublin Jack of All Trades, claimed by everyone as their own, from Glasgow down to Dover.
Or am I missing the point here and you were looking for songs with "work" in the title?
I still think the best "work" song is "Gold watch blues" by Woody Guthrie I think... only ever heard it done by Donovan.. neither of which were Irish to my knowledge..LOL..

She sang it, but I think it was written by another Cape Bretoner, Jack.

It's a Working Man I am was written by Rita MacNeil from Cape Breton. Maybe there's a category either for her songs or Cape Breton songs which might give you what you want.

If you type in working man in forum search subject box a thread comes up with the song It's A Working Man I Am.
