Sean Cannon (of the Dubliners) sang the Sick Note recently when he did a solo gig (well, solo apart from son James) at the Cellar Upstairs, and Packie Byrne sang it at the English National Festival in April.

So I'm sitting in my technical writing class listening to the Gerard Hoffnung "Bricklayer's Letter". The instructor is using it as an example of the ultimate technical process description.

This course has its moments.

Yes the song was based on the address given by Gerrard Hoffnung.

Pat Cooksey wrote the song specifically for one of Dubliners whose name escapes me at the moment.

The first performance was to be at a folk club in Birmingham but the first step on the moon meant that no one turned up.

I heard just recently that Pat Cooksey has joined up with the Dubliners for a couple of gigs on their current German tour.

Gerrard Hoffnung, recorded by the BBC:
Speech Day, Oxford Union, December 1958 "Life begins at 38" includes the Bricklayer story.
I'd always assumed the song was based on that story. Anyone know otherwise ?

So which came first: "The Sick Note" or

"Why Paddy's Not At Work, Today(Excuse Note)" by Pat Cooksey? See DT, type in the whole title in brackets.

The only version I'd ever heard before was Paddy.

Thanks Andy for the Sick Note link; it is also in the DT under the title "Why Paddy's not at work today". A much requested song, has been discussed in threads, one very recently.
