The traditional Carol season is about to start once again in the villages around Sheffield. For those unfamiliar with that tradition, it takes place mainly in pubs; the singers having been made unwelcome in churches back in the 19th century. Prior to that, the "West Gallery" style of singing was quite common; it now survives mainly in the South Yorkshire/ North Derbyshire region and in parts of the West Country; and in parts of the USA.

The Sheffield area tradition is particularly strong and well known (in great part due to Dr Ian Russell's efforts over the years) and, as in previous years, both the South Riding Folk Arts Network and Yorkshire Folk Arts will be publishing Pat Malham's listings of singing events on their websites.

The first version of the schedule can now be seen at

http://www.folk-network.com/events/2006/carols_06.html

The list is cumulative, and will be added to as further information becomes available.

Not on websites yet as far as I know, but mentioned in local press...

There'll be an introductory sing at Worral Independant Chapel from 2pm until 5pm on Saturday 25 November, singing from the Blue Book (copies available I guess).

Despite roadworks diversions, the 58 bus is still going as far as The Blue Ball.

And for those of a Dungworth persuasion there is a bus on a Sunday from Hillsborough Interchange at 11.00 am that gets there with perfect timing.

And one back at 2.30 or thereabouts. Mind that one tends to be full of drunks singing carols.......

For those of you in the US who can't get there, there's a "Pub Carol Sing" in Boston on the 3rd of Dec. See the www.fssgb.org concert shcedule for information.
I think the guy who led the West Gallery workshop at NOMAD is leading this, the web site doesn't say but he said something last weekend.

For those in Cornwall, Padstow starts its carols in the Market Sqaure on Sunday 3rd December at 7.30pm, then every sunday in December and Christmas Eve.
