I remember hearing Tom do this song in concert ( early 70s?), and he introduced it by saying that there were lots of songs about falling madly in love, and lots of songs about relationships breaking down, but not so many "in the middle" love songs where everything is just sort of ticking over. "Not Tonight Marie" was his "ticking over" love song.

It's pretty straightforward, like most of Paxton's songs. Try it in D, which is the key I seem to recall he uses himself, so D, G and A7 with perhaps the odd Bm and Em should cover it.

It is good unaccompanied as it is easier to add a few theatrics and move the speed about.
