Just want to say 'hi' to everyone I met at the 2006 Getaway. It was a great experience, and I loved every minute of it. Pity I didn't know about the late-night jams, or I'd have happily joined in.

Special thanks to Charlie, Dean and Rita for facilitating my participation (don't try to say that quickly when you've just eaten a box of crackers)... I really appreciated your warm welcome, and was glad I didn't goof up too badly leading my first-ever sessions.

I particularly loved:

the Copper family session -- haven't sung those songs for years;
Lisa Null's beautiful, pure singing;
the Shape Note singing (wow!);
Joe Newberry's exquisite banjo playing;
Dan Schatz's amazing technique on autoharp (I didn't know it could sound like that!);
Sylvia Herold's singing of the new version of The Two Sisters; Micca's wonderful parodies...
and meeting so many friendly folks who are as immersed in music and words as I have been all my life. Made me feel normal! :-) Actually, it just made me feel at home.

I hope I'll be able to return next year -- am working on it.

Linda, the "Deeper Down" song about well digging is called "Song of Artesian Water." It's a Banjo Patterson song with a tune written by Cathie O'Sullivan (and subsequently folk processed almost to the point of being food processed). I'm hoping to put it out on CD within the next year, if all goes well.

The other song is called "Applesauce" and it's by Jan Harmon. Nick Apollonio and Kristin Tescher recorded it on their More Maine Coast Music album.

What those two songs have in common (other than lots of syllables) is that they are enormously fun to sing.

It really was a wonderful Getaway - if I have a regret it is that I spent so much time making and listening to music that I didn't have enough time for socializing. But it's hard to call that a regret.

The camp, as others have said, is a wonderful site, and I think having heat improves the quality of the music. It at least improved the quality of mine, as I reveled in playing my instruments with fingers that weren't frozen.

The music was really excellent. I hesitate to list my favorites because I know I'll leave folks out, but here's a few. Joe Newberry's banjo workshop was a particular highlight, along with listening to Jill Rogoff, John Roberts, Julia Friend, Lisa Null, Colleen Cleveland, George Stephens and Mary LaMarca and others. The Saturday night concert was quite good, with a lovely new song from Mick Lane (sentimental mode) and the aforementioned cowboy hysterics featuring Mick Lane (high horse mode). Some people I wish I'd heard more (or at all), but you do have to make choices.

It was also a treat to meet so many new folks, including Erin Kelly and Mairi Quodomine, Joe Newberry, Jill Rogoff and others.

And thank you to all who congratulated us, asked about the coming baby (due in April) and especially to Jacqui Morse, who presented us with our very first baby blanket!

All in all, one of the best Getaways ever.

And I have to say my Getaway time is now officially over as I dropped Micca off at the train this afternoon on his was back to Dulles and then across the pond.

Bubba was extremely torn. He had adopted Micca as his slavish ear scratcher and was highly tempted to follow him back to London. Amtrack seem reluctant to let him tag along so he condesended to stay here with me. We had a grand time poking into every odd little shop in town (there are many here) and finally getting buzzed up to a rock shop on a second floor rear where we happliy explored until we burnt both our fingers and our wallets.

Micca will now confirm that Montclair actually does have a true Brit shop with real every day items for the homesick expat.


Oh and Barry, as I was clearing up the church after padgaent practice I reached down and found a blackvelvet spagetti strapped scrap on the kneeler at the altar rail --- really those fantasies were not actually suppose to play out in my church !!!!! I giggled for the rest of the night.

Just got back home to the computer after a week of visiting family in the DC area, and so am posting late. It was a great one for me this year. Lots of amazing songs (I may have even gotten some of them on my little tune sucker) Lots of new wonderful people, and friends from previous Getaways, a chance to play a real range of stuff I don't normally do, Old timey, jazz, hearing George Ward and John Roberts and Joe Newbury and even getting my traditional "last fiddle in the sun" with David the glorious harper. My only regret is that I didn't stay on until Monday. Next year it'll be the whole nine yards!

Great to see and hear Mary, Barry, Annie, Janie, Jim Bunch (please don't get so much stuff that I don't fit in your car next year) Big Mick, Mmario (glad you liked the bathroom music), Jacqui, Joe, Edmond (I am in Montpelier, let me know when you and Charmion are coming through next time) and so many more. What a joy!

Thank You to all of you who make this happen so that those of us from far away can just come, sing, play and be part of the tribe.

I had an absolutely wonderful time! Since I'm too lazy to cut, paste, and re-write, I'll simply leave a pointer to my LiveJournal comments. Then add a few more highlights:

-- Getting to hear CraneDriver & SussexCarole in the Friday Night open sing and Saturday concert. Picked up both CD's, largely thanks to "Lifeboat Horses" and "Shirley's Little Sunburnt Spot", respectively.

-- Getting to hear Micca do the Gladiator Song. (Even if it's still earworming me over a week later....)

-- Chatting with Judy Goddard and family, Art & Jenn Brooks, Joe Offer, Micca, John & Sandy LaPrelle and many others

-- Concerts by Jill Rogoff, Dan Schatz, Micca and John Roberts

And probably several more things I'm forgetting. Meanwhile, I owe Big Mick a song, so maybe I should actually go work on it! *grin*

Whew, just in time! - this thread was getting ready to drop off the page. I'm a late-comer with my comments, but they are nonetheless heartfelt.

At first I was really homesick for Ramblewood - the only "home" I have ever had for the Getaway. But West River really grew on me. It is really (probably more) beautiful in its own way. And the welcoming fire in the fireplace!

It was great to see Rita and Lisa Null and others looking rested and refreshed all weekend and going to everything, even at 4 AM - since they didn't have to deal with the constant mountaineering and cold-weather issues.

I did find the dining hall comparatively cramped-feeling, and very hot on Saturday. I spent much of the Saturday night concert sticking my nose in the crack of the doors trying to breathe some cooler air, and was headachy, groggy and couldn't hold a tune till about 3 AM, when I finally perked up. But next year sounds like it will be greatly improved in that regard, with a new dining hall and us learning how to work the heating system better. My poor old flamingo was a-droopin' (I couldn't get the hang of operating the battery pack) and I'd felt about the same. But the skit, now of course an honored tradition, was as hysterical to participate in as last year. You will note that I held my reins in the correct, learned-at-day-camp-position at all times.

As usual, I loved all the workshops and concertizing. Special, special highlights were (in no particular order) the Copper Family workshop, Dan Schatz's concert, especially the song, "Deeper Down" about well-digging and a song in a later workshop about apples, and the chance to play Gutbucketeer's tuned-ten-tin-can drum for half an hour in the jugband workshop. Not quite jamming, but as close as I'm likely to get!

Surprises this year were the workshops I didn't plan to go to, but which I dropped into for a minute and couldn't bear to leave- like one of the guitar workshops, learning about upbeats and downbeats--it explained a lot. Also, going to my Peace cabin for a shower or changing coats and finding that hey! Dan Schatz or Lisa Null are sitting in your "living room" and doing really remarkable stuff! I've never actually gotten to Lisa Null's Vocal Clinic before and I learned SO much.

Also delightful was meeting new-to-me people; Carl Zebooker, John Roberts and the Shivers and Brookses, and getting to sit down and talk over several days with lots of people I'd said "Hi" to many times before but never had had a real conversation with. Maybe the new setting fostered that kind of interraction, or maybe I was still in my 40th Reunion mode and more open to just talking to anybody whether I "knew" them or not.

Sunday night's sing in the Registration area! Wow! To see Barry Finn bellowing away again at full voice- a real lift to the heart! And then the quieter sing in the fireplace room until about 5 AM (couldn't quite stay up till dawn). That sing will keep me warm all winter.

I missed a lot of folks that couldn't come this year, including Ebbie, and Theresa Tooley, my inspiriation from last year. So many thanks to the Program Committee and everybody who worked so hard and so creatively to put this together. Till next time…….

Our Getaway spanned a whole week so our memories stretch beyond West River Camp. It'll take weeks to get it all sorted, but this is a brief summary of it all.

Bill & Rita put us up (put up with us?) from the Thursday night when we arrived tired and bedraggled from fighting our way through US Immigration (the Global War on Tourism?) until after the Getaway. Wonderful people, with an amazing house the size of an aircraft hanger (but much cosier).

We arrived at West River with Bill and his craft goods, and then it was hugs with all our friends as they turned up. Suddenly the last Getaway seemed like only yesterday. The Friday evening sing was a great foretaste of what was to come - remembering the voices and songs from our previous visits.

West River is a wonderful venue with heated cabins, comfy beds, picturesque waterside location, great venues for workshops and sings without losing the charm of Ramblewood.

The Workshops were so varied it was difficult to work out how to be in two or more places at the same time. That cloning workshop is a good idea, but we'd probably never fit it in.

Saturday night's concert - we did our Kipling song (Do you like Kipling? Don't know, I've never Kipled) and Carole yet again allowed herself to be costumed by Sinsull (thankfully customs didn't look into the luggage on the way home, as we bought two costumes for our local folk club Christmas party)! - Will we ever learn? Probably not.

Sunday night! Wow! We had a really superb time - first another great concert, then tremendous chorus songs in the auction room and finally a quieter sing into the early hours.

Monday was a relatively quiet day but we had out first chance to visit an American eat all you want Chinese buffet with Bill & Rita. The words "I'm full" still echo in our ears amidst Rita's & Carole's uncontrollable giggles.

Tuesday night Bill & Rita took us to the shanty sing at Wheaton where we were given a very friendly welcome, met Getaway friends again and had a great time. Andrew was delighted when two of the locals sang one of his songs.

We flew up to Boston on Wednesday & were hosted by Mary Sinsull and the Maine-iacs. Thanks again for wonderful hospitality.

Thursday we were given a tour of Portland by Charley Noble & Judy B. Then that night Sinsull hosted a party for us. It was our first meeting with Seamus the mad Labrador, who showed an unexpected talent for the kazoo and an inexplicable passion for Micca, but the photos can be suppressed for a fee.

Then, far too soon, it was time to go home. We must do this again! So many thank you's to all our friends xxxx

I am really glad you preserved appearances during your temporary interruption on that jug run.

Tink, Room 102 had many comings and going in the night so it may be a moving target to count heads. The residents had overlapping schedules. I recall Mick coming in to go to bed shortly before breakfast, one morning.

Some humpy-backed sorrows and a lot of snores
There were mugs and jugs and wakey-wakes,
It's sad but it's true...

That was my peak momen....well, a peak...well, one of.....Aw hell, It was all wonderful.

What a brilliant Getaway! Or is it "Getaways"? These threads always make clear that we live different ones and that somehow they all intersect. That's magic enough for me.

My indelible Getaway memory from this year may well come from a moment very laste on Sunday night/Monday morning, in the Retreat Center lounge. John Roberts was singing Nic Jones's version of Sir Patrick Spens accompanying himself on concertina. David Scheim played an elaborate counterpoint on his harp and George Ward was at the piano--three consummate musicians improvising what turned into an arrangement that was worthy of a professional recording. Instead, it is only recorded in memories by the cloudy half-asleep midnight minds of a few of us.

We were blessed this year in having four wonderful Israeli visitors: Amiel Schotz and Margo (sorry Margo, don't remember your last name and my Getaway data is on the fried computer), Jill Rogoff and Sandy Cash. All of them contributed wonderful things to the program and the weekend. Wow.

First heard Jill early in the weekend when she sang a beautiful farewell she had written to one of her friends. Glorious voice too.

Sandy Cash sent chills down my spine and tears down my face with her song in the Sunday concert about "Jorge Pulanska," an Italian in Spain during WWII who posed as the Polish Ambassador to help over 3000 Jews escape from Spain. This song was doubly special to me because I have heard other stories of Italians helping Jews to escape from occupied France.

In memory of Rachel Levi, 17, who was killed by a suicide-bomber in Jerusalem on March 29, 2002. She was a friend and class-mate of our older daughter. 'Shabbat' is the Hebrew word for the Jewish Sabbath, which begins on a Friday evening at sunset. The third verse refers to Racheli's brief bout with bulimia, which she had successfully overcome. The song is on The King's Well.

Racheli walks to the store on a Friday afternoon:

awww...durn, Mick....you're hired as permanant chair of the Publicity & Shmooozing committee...(same wages as you got as temporary chairman..).

Now that I'm half-way awake, I want to comment especially about a couple of workshops I attended. The tribute to The Copper Family was amazing...just wallowing in those songs, led by folks who had sung them for years, and who had known the Coppers personally, was 'almost' as good as the two occasions I got to hear them in person. John Roberts and Heather Wood and Andy Wallace and Sussex Carole...thank you for the 'feel' and energy, as well as for wonderful choices! (Would that we had 2 more hours)

Even though I don't play a squeeze-box, I enjoyed tremendously the knowlege and versatility on display...many different styles of instrument and a great set of tunes....wow...

By helping Jacqui lead Comic songs, I had to listen to ummmm...got to hear "The Gladiator" twice! And Georgous Gary reprised "When I Was a Boy"....one of those tour-de-farces that knocks your socks off. (He posted the words sometime in the past...search)...and more other funny stuff was sung than I dare try to remember.

finally...as one who is continually fretting about the nuts & bolts running of this circus, I want to thank the various folks who just DID stuff to help out....setting up chairs for the Sunday concert, cleaning things in the small kitchen, moving tables about in both the dining hall and the retreat center, helping other folks load & unload...etc...etc...I'm sure many good deeds were done that I never even saw. It sure makes it all happen easier.

Yeah, sure...let's do it again.

Rita, my darling love, you have described what I was trying to say at the Sunday night concert. Thanks for capturing it so perfectly!!! Here we are, we have had a wedding on the way to Getaway (with the reception at the Getaway), we have babies we all celebrate (Goober Schatz on the way, Bodhi Spiegel here), we have babies raised at Getaway (Dan and Ken Schatz, Darriel Day), all the kids we see running around. I remember buying them all pennywhistles... where did those little rugrats go????). We have two young couples we have seen go from the dating stage to the married stage. We have friends from around this country, and around the world who come, or are planning to come....... how is this not a community? How is it not a tribe? It is like our own participatory Woodstock that happens every year. This event is a must do, and one day, when they write the book on folk history, someone will mention this amazing gathering. We owe it all to FSGW, and the work of its wonderful volunteer members. Sure, Mudcatters have put some spice in it and become part of the community. But you folks are who we owe the debt to. I, for one, just want to thank you for changing my musical life. This year, in particular, you may have had a bigger impact than you could ever imagine. I am inspired to sing again, and it has been well over a year since that has been the case.

Yep, it's a tribe. I love being a member of it.

One last thing. If you aren't a member of FSGW, why not join? You will get reduced rates on Getaway, and a wonderful newsletter. And if you are in the area, more activities than you can imagine.

I dunno if it is the sensory overload, the residual hangover, the sleep deprivation, or, most likely, the sheer volume of good cheer and good comapny, but I am still sorting through flashbacks and sentimental recollections of the weekend. Thanks again to those who made it happen, who have done hero's duty in a good cause!

If there are recordings anyone would like to see collected onto one CD I would be happy to undertake the duty using MP3s, MiniDisks, tapes, or other CDs as input. Just let me know. As usual I was too transfixed by the excitement to bother setting up my recorder. I am going to get something much easier to use for next time.

There was a great remark made on Sunday morning, and in lots of ways it sums it all up: "This is great. It's been a long time since I got to be part of a musical tribe." Yeah.

I guess that's why the labels of "Mudcat" and "FSGW" have stopped being noticed much at the Getaway. We're all members of the Getaway tribe and welcomed as members when we can come back to another Getaway. Even if it's been 30 years. Maybe especially when it's been 30 years.

Let's do it again next year.

Next year I will stop and pick up a box of wax earplugs and sell them at cost to help folks. I wondered why no one had done this. They are inexpensive and for sale in most drug stores.

Janie - I used earplugs so the loud sleeping noises from 'She Who Does Not Snore' didn't bother me.

I think that MY snoring may have kept the others awake, but they should have brought earplugs too.

That Sunday night sing in the auction room was incredible.

The vote of thanks due to the Committee for bringing off a move to another site, that was like British beer , slightly gassy, induced inebriation(of the cerebral kind) and was flat and warm!!
the singing of many people, and their friendship also was priceless, I can honestly say I lost all track and idea of wether they were "FSGW" or "mudcat" but was treated and, I hope, treated them in the same way, I would like to thank those who came and supported me at my mini concert it was an honour and a privelage to sing for you. To those Who asked, I wish I HAD written "the Gladiator"!!!! The "Late night extra" sing in the Auction Hall was AMAZING!! like the best of the spontaneous after hours sings at British folk festivals, and the singers, to whom we owe a big debt of thanks (in no particular order) Ron Davies, Barry Finn, Bill,Day, Dick Greenhaus, John Roberts, Edmund,and anyone else who sang that I havent listed, it was a magical ending, and one that could not have been planned for. to use the Inuit (so I am told) greeting, "sometime again"

We had a Getaway "debriefing" tonight; very rewarding. We talked about workshop locations, quiet cabins, food and more for next year, and of course discussed the suggestions that have been made for changes. Next year there should be a new dining hall. That means the spaces for workshops, etc will change. This meeting was a good start.

Now back to memories. The Sunday night sings in the Retreat Center were the very best times I had all weekend. I stayed about an hour at the "Raise the Roof" sing Barry started in the main room, then stayed til 5 am at a quieter jam & sing in the lounge. Enjoyed 'em both but some of the moments in the lounge were the highlights of my weekend. Hearing John LaPrelle's harmonica, then his guitar version of "Little Beggarman," was maybe best of the best.

It was pretty late, so I'm afraid a lot of what I can remember clearly and specifically are songs I led. A fantastic jam on a song that moves me a lot, "Un Canadien Errant." Edmund, Keith B, Sandy and John LaPrelle joined in singing, with David S on harp, Ron D on viola, Keith on guitar, can't remember if we had concertina and piano. Also -- same crew, plus John R on concertina and George W on piano, for "Dumbarton's Drums" and "Rose of Allendale," two of my longtime Getaway favorites for slow chorus songs.

I would love for anyone who was there to remind me of more of what was played and sung during that session. It was sooooo good musically.

Oh! Quiet Carmen,(Allan C's better half)brought out her autoharp and played and sang. It was wonderful to have you join in, Carmen.

I finally worked up the nerve to sing the only song I have ever written "Little Sally Walker Down in New Orleans" (well, it is partly mine), and was relieved and gratified that it was well received in the Friday night open sing.

Mmario and Gorgeous Gary both sang songs written by Alaska Mike, and we toasted Mike and Tawmmie and offered up thoughts and well wishes for his recovery.

Tinker says I didn't snore too badly. No one in Sinsull's room had the nerve to comment on 'She Who does Not Snore."

Unlike Barry, I was not particularly happy with the Nature Center. It felt cold and class-roomy to me, and the tables were an obstacle.

DAMN it. I'm REALLY GOOD at Runaround Sue, and HATE that I couldn't be there. Who knew I had such an ugly jealous streak?!

I used to feel so sorry for the sad few who waited dockside for the return of the weary singers, and hated to gloat about how wonderfully magically fun every minute was, but did it anyway.

And I'm glad you're doing it now, 'cause it'll help me work things out in a different way next year.

Bill and I are still Sleeping It Off today after staying up with Andrew and Carole, carousing at the Royal Mile Pub (and afterwards) last night. Bill drove them to the airport early this A.M., next stop Boston.

Thanks to Severn, who had it on CD, two ladies did a splendid rendition of Andrew's song "Navigator Lady" at the Royal Mile. They sing it often there, which meant that Andrew got a huge round of applause before he'd even played a note on his concertina. After he and Carole sang there for the first time the welcome was even warmer.... Another fine post-Getaway memory.

Carole said they will post to the thread once they are back in the UK, when (and if?) her head stops spinning.

For myself, next year it would be good to have some 'music at night' cabins. Also, maybe, a better way of advertising the existence of the Auction, which didn't get as much traffic as might have been the case.

I say Three Cheers for the Getaway Committee, for pulling off such a major change with so little confusion by being bigger than life and juggling madly. I wondered last year how Charlie, for example, manages to do it, but this year I found out his secret. It's not software. He keeps his pockets stuffed with little slips of paper constituting his filing system, and shuffles them like a card sharp at regul'r intervals. Sometimes the most brilliant solution is also the most straightforward and simple.

I saw nothing to kvetch about except the one confusion about the quiet rooms, and as far as I have been able to track it, it was primarily one person's widely distributed and vociferous concerns that escalated it into a major issue. All it needs, I would say, is a pre-determined policy about where the all nighters may lark about, widely communicated.

You guys are the heros of the Getaway and I am really grateful you make it happen. Thanks again.

It's actually a thick inner city Bostonian accent, I'm now only 45 minutes north of Boston, not far enough away to lose the it. The salt coat is because I used to sleep with my mouth open while I was a liveaboard in Hawaii, it's called flyfishing out there, a way a "flying fish sailors" catch the flying fish native to those waters.
The weekend was great, even better than last year seeing as I can remember more of it this time around. To hook up with Sylvia again after 25 yrs was quite a delight & treat she was a stunning surprise, just as I remembered her. It was a blast to join in with Dave Diamond & Bob Clayton for the Sunday eve concert on David's parody of "Martin Said To His Man" with his
"Chaney said to his man, lie, man, lie,
Chaney said to his man, start the war now"
The workshops were great espically for those that were able to clone themselves. Maybe next year some of the major workshops (the Grand Sing types) can be stretched into 1 1/2 to 2 hr time slots? Me, I ended up cutting more than a few just so I could catch part of another, that's a good sign of a great selection. I thought the Nature was a good singing venue & that it would've made a better late nite singing venue than the outer room of the retreat center as would the back room of the retreat center. Even though the the late nite Sunday session was a great sing, I didn't think it lent itself to spontaenous singing jams. Actually I led off feeling that it wouldn't happen if it wasn't pushed. My feeling was that the only thing that lacked in comparison to the other camps was that it didn't lend itself as well to spontaenous jamming. But I really don't think that, that's not much of a hurddle to get over, it just a 1st year thing. The cabin lobbies do make for nice late nite jams & that seems to be only a matter again of a live & learn thing were the kinks can get worked out after they've been found only by finding them during the 1st go round at a new camp. Nothing's perfect the 1st time aroumd, but it was damn close.
Micca, it was a good ride home, I got home & almost ran off to sea, thanks to swapping stories with you.
Thanks to Charlie, Rita, Carly, Nancy & all the others for putting in the time & effort to make it such a memorable gathering.

Getaway was wonderful and warm this year. In addition to the highlights described already -- I'd like to mention some other gems.   Mary LaMarca's guilty pleasures workshop with Sondra Wallace singing "poisoning pigeons in the park," Nancy King's singing in the tribute to Joe Glazer. Lisa Null's vocal clinic "#$&* your mother," and the Do Wop workshop. Thanks everyone.

I got to hear a lot more music from Lisa Null than I usually do. She is incredible!

One special memory is of Carly and I slipping away to a quiet corner where she sang for me a beautiful song she had written a number of years ago, inspired by her experience of the Getaway.

This year I spent more time than in the past with FSGW people who either are not on Mudcat or rarely post. I gained a much deeper sense of what a rich folk community (and community of folks)they have built in the DC area. I'm jealous:>)

One of the things I love most about the Getaway, is the warmth, encouragement, and absolute acceptance extended to all of us who share in the love of the music. There are many fine singers and musicians, and 99.9% of them not only accept those of us who ain't, they embrace us, make it safe for us to participate. They convey that our participation in the making of music and song is valued.

(Although, after seeing Amos, Jim, Mick, Joe, Severn, myself, and the horses we rode in on, some Getawayers were probably thinking that the encouragement has gone quite far enough!)

I missed most of the late-night singing, having arrived dead tired and with no stamina, but the workshops, open-sings, songs and voices were all sublime.

I had to choose between an hour to catch up with sister Annie and the Doo-Wop session--Annie and I had a wonderful hour lying on the bunks talking sister-talk--but the reviews of that session were great. (I checked the schedule carefully, but the cloning workshop had apparently been scratched from the program.)

There were so many awesome singers and awesome songs.

The energy that Mia B. generated in the Raise the Roof Gospel, her knowledge, voice and delivery, all simply blew me away, as did all the voices raised together to 'raise the roof.' Thanks to everyone who came to offer a song or add their voice.

The spontaneous shanty circle in the retreat center, the late night Blues jamming until dawn on one night, the wild-fire old-time jamming the last night in, the AMAZING job that those who came to the DooWop session did to make it sparkle, watching Lonesome EJ belt out Runaround Sue like a pro, hearing Big Mick's falsetto...then there was the Great Flamingo and Duckliong Dogie Round Up, in which we heard the Great Irish Baritone of the Mudcat singing Ghost Riders in the Sky--something I shall never forget, unfortunately...in SPITE of the bourbon...due to the peculiarity of the circumstances...the rip-roaring Jugband Music and Jim's AMAZING facility on the washtub base and about fifteen other instruments of percussive inspirtation simultaneously...the amazing blues harps solos cutting through the night like a C&O Cannonball...the harp and fiddle duets wafting over the greensward like a visit from angels...the boats at sunrise (or was it sunset? I get confused at these events...Dotty's ukelele-accompanied torch music... Chance's amazing fingerings... Barry's salt-coated solos and that wonderful Massachusetts accent...Don's beautiful voice...the list goes on and on and on. Can't we stretch these out to, say, a month at a time?

I have to extend my deep and heartfelt thanks to the producers and organizers, Charlie and Rita and all those who sweated long into the evening and over the weeks to make it all come off just so...

well...after a slow start, I ended up singing and playing more than I have in YEARS at a Getaway. First, I had to something at the Comic songs with Jacqui..(such an easy workshop..*grin*...you push the button and the group takes over! Jacqui & I just needed to nod & point)

THEN! in the bare room in the Retreat Center Sunday morning, Joe Newberry, Andy Wallace, Lisa Null, (what WAS the name of the guy who played banjo/mandolin?) and several others not only tolerated the autoharp, but played mostly songs that could be done with between 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 chords!....Lots of old timey and trad tunes & songs. I wore out my arm! (happily)

THEN!!! Sunday night late, Barry Finn decided we were doing too much chatting and snacking..(true, we were)...and softly and gently BELLOWED a dulcet-toned chanty at us, and dared someone to continue when he was done....so, we continued for a couple of ummmm...'interesting' hours. My, my, my! I remembered stuff I had forgotten I knew!....At one point, I decided the tone was low enough for "The Hermit" (who lived in a dell)....I had gotten maybe 8 words out when John Roberts appeared beside me and helped me word for word to describe the plight of the poor hermit...*grin*. Let me say, there were NO dull moments that evening. Crane Driver, Jacqui, Ron Davies, Sussex Carole, Micca, Nancy King, John Roberts, CET, Barry Finn, etc, etc...saw to it!


...and then there were the just plain sublime moments of beautiful, moving,song and melody, by more folks than I dare mention. (well, I may mention some later..). You talk about 'critical mass' of talent and knowlege...we had it.

This was my 28th consecutive Getaway, and I cannot possibly say it was 'the best', as these things don't lend themselves to 'rating', but I just echo the "wows" from above and repeat that we truly did miss absent friends, and hope that next year.......you know.

I learned that the camp is going to build a NEW dining hall, leaving the old one with its space as an extra venue..(dancing, maybe?)...and...that in 2 years (2008) we are booked for early OCTOBER!! So, be like those Jivaro Indians and PLAN AHEAD!

now....maybe a nap...

Thanks for the note. I didn't mean to come across as an old grouse. Those that organize the Getaway do a fantastic job of trying to make sure everyone is accomodated.

BTW I wasn't even aware of any conflicts in the all night sing-a-long cabin. What I was refering to took place elsewhere.

The good news is that with a little touching up and tweaking based on this year's experiences, West-River will become a great home for the Getaway for many years to come, with warm rooms, and plenty of places to both sleep, sing, and play :-)

Another - "oh I forgot" moment; for those of you who left early - you missed the excellent organ music that wafted through the Retreat Center during packing up monday morning. Also - Sunday evening it was pretty well proved that as long as the doors between rooms were closed you could manage several sessions in the retreat center - on in each of the large rooms and one in the foyer by the bathrooms. Bet you could put another in the hallway outside the rooms, too, if you needed to.

Agree completely on the Nature Center, Jim. It is unfortunate that the mixup occurred on the all night sing cabin. I signed up for that as well. That is a tradition that the 'Catters brought to Getaway, and now is populated by much more than just them. I would be very upset if it didn't go on, it just needs tuning up. In fairness, this committee did such a magnificent job, that I just hate to see this thing gain any more status as a problem. It just needs a touch up.

This was, for me, one of the best Getaways ever. I sorely missed old friends that couldn't make it, but a wonderful job was done by all.

The Getaway was mellower this year for me than in the past. I guess its because I am no longer trying to run around and see/do everything. Its more catching up with old friends, jamming, and hanging out. The Jugband workshop was enthusiastic if small and I got to show off all of my toys (next year I'm going to need a truck), I stayed up way too late on Friday night jamming in the Nature Center and never really recovered. LEJ was smart to take a nap on Saturday :-)

Highlights for me inlcuded:

Seeing Susan A-R (now minus the A) playing with everyone, everywhere. I think she and Amos must have clones and meeting

Meeting Jamming with Karl (last name unknown), who is a very very good guitar player, and has a wealth of knowledge.

The Country/Blues Jams both nights with Joel, Karl, LEJ, Donna, Elenor, Amos, etc. (in the Nature Center Friday night and Paz Saturday night).

Actually getting through leading Flip, Flop, and Fly with bass accompaniment in the Blues Workshop.

Learning the secrets of swing guitar in Sylvia's Workshop, Blues Guitar in Donna and Elenor's Workshop, and voice in the two voice workshops. More, More, More of this type of session.

Playing my bucket/can drum in the Raise the Roof Gospel session. Mia and Janie did a fantastic job leading it. Man can Janie sing.

NOT hurting anyone with the Whip

Just Hanging Out.

Downers were:

Not seeing everyone that couldn't make it (Dani, Max, Kendal, Skarpi, Bobert, etc.)

Not being able to stay up more.

Confusion on which cabins were supposed to be quiet and which were for jamming. Clearly inform folks ahead of time as they register.   Next year it should be made very clear that music and singing MAY TAKE PLACE in the cabins late into the night, if not all night. It would help to bring back the ear plugs too. More attention should also be given to putting people that want to go to sleep early together in the hotel like area off the conference center and people that are going to stay up late in places that are condusive to staying up late. Where and how the Jams take place/evolve will then take care of themselves.

BTW: The Nature Center is un-comfortable and a lousy place to jam/hang out all night.

I hardly know where to begin this, from the moment I stepped off the plane (an hour late) at Dulles last Thursday(was it really only 5 days ago!!!) and was met by Fortunato and whisked off to his abode for Cider and Music to sitting at a keyboard in a quiet suburb of South Portland, Maine ai SINSULLS, with cats and coffee. I am crammed full of memories and faces , incredible singers (Dan Schats, Jill Rogoff,John Roberts and Many Many more!!) the Friends who have been so supportive, Whom I wont list, but they know who they are, I am overwhelmed with feelings of not being worthy of you all, and You let me sing to you and seemed to enjoy my efforts, I don not think I can express how much this support and friendship has meant to me at this time, I will try and write some more either later or when I get home and put it into perspective,
By the way, if you have to make a long car journey, and want to avoid boredom, travel with Barry Finn as the driver!!!, he regaled us with some wonderful stories of his personal experiences, and arrange for SINSULL and Ranger1 to be your fellow passengers, the hilarty nearly led to "childish"accidents on several occassions.

Here's me closing my flight plan. I got home a couple of hours ago. The journey was made much easier thanks to the great CDs from CAMSCO and John Roberts. I spent the last few hours on the road singing along to the Hissyfit CD that I bought from Micca.

There are too many good memories to single any of them out. My overwhelming impression after the weekend is one of gratitude - to Chance and Susette for their hospitality Thursday night and a great music party, to all the organizers, to everyone who made me feel welcome, and to the wonderful musicians who let me sing along with them. I will remember the Sunday night session as long as I live.

Was it just me or were the workshops absolutely and amazingly exceptional this year? Joe Newberry's Banjo Workshop - heh heh. SINS surrounded by banjo players. I was in heaven.

Every workshoip big or small was crammed full of wonderful music and enthusiastic participants. The late night jam sessions were magic.

Many thanks to the Getaway committee for everything from housing to food to music. My only regret - my workshop was opposite John Roberts and I couldn't be in two places at once.

Geeta looks radiant. Next year there will be several Mud Babies to pass around. Now, will Auntie KT and Auntie Dani and Great Uncle Captain and Uncle Skarpi et al be there to there handle familial obligations?

I missed a lot of people - and I think most especially Pauline. I spotted her button Friday evening and kept waiting for it to disappear from the table, but it never did. waaahhhhh! She would have loved the acoustics in the foyer outside the bathrooms (yes, we got treated to live harp and fiddle music outside the "necessaries")

The pub sing was fantastic as always, the parody one as well. the after hour sessions were incredible. John Roberts is always a privilige to hear.

Jeri was present in lyric if not body - and wow is the only statement that comes to mind. We ran the Iditerod with Mike Campbell (coutesy of Gorgeous Gary) and El Greko songs appeared several times. So the absent were present.

Susette and I have just returned.
    As you may have seen, the campus is quite beautiful, with river shore and a small bay filled with sailboats for scenary. The cabins are quite warm (good news for aging bones). Each cabin is named for a translation of Peace: Paz; Shalom; etc. There are eight cabins, four on each side of a large common area with chairs and couches. The trees sit in the open woods, some with views of water.
There is a dining hall with cafeteria style food (remember elementary school food?). There are also a retreat center hall with a fairly large common room and a second room filled with Camsco records and the silent auction and registration, etc
    You'll hear lots about the music, so my favorites were Sylvia Herold, a beautiful and talented singer and guitarist, her swing workshop, Joe Newberry and his banjo workshop.

More later of course. You were missed.

OK, had a good night's sleep but still tired.

We started off with four in our very small, very crowded room. Friday night - went to bed and the others wouldn't let me use my book light to read so I went to sleep. I snore. Deborah, in the bunk above me, had never 'roughed it' so much in her whole life and finds difficulty going off to sleep. Seems my snores kept her and Mary awake. Then the sound stopped and Deb was heard to say "She's stopped snoring. Maybe she's dead. Good!" Got the weekend off to a great start - Deb decamped to a hotel with fluffy white towels and a comfy bed and commuted for the rest of the weekend.

Same complaint as usual - too many wonderful workshops - cloning needed! I was touched, but not surprised, at the number of friends who wanted news of Kendall. Your good wishes and hugs have been passed on.

Lisa Null's vocal workshop was a real revelation and the Doo Wop session was so good - Flawn Williams in particular must have had a very misspent youth! Two of my friends got up and sang in the concerts for the first time, which was great. Our bedroom had the 'Abandon hope all ye who enter here' on the door and I think the hope would have been for sanity and seriousness. The room was basically a giggle box. Mary was seriously grouchy until supplied with coffee in the mornings, except on Monday morning when she was almost human, causing Tami to ask "who are you and what have you done with Mary?"

I suppose that Mary and I had to expect to get some of our own back with the 'taste award' we got presented with Saturday lunchtime. Mary disappeared and left me with sole ownership of this lovely(?) item. All I can say is "watch your back, lady!".

I have met so many beautiful people at the Getaways and it is so good to renew those relationships. We may not see each other from one Getaway to another but one hug is all it takes to be right back there with family again. Geeta was looking radiant and next year we will have a new member, Goober, to fuss over and to induct into the folk way.

I, for one, had a seriously good time and the planning starts now for next year!

I should pay more attention to what I'm doing. I intended to write a brief note of congratulations to those who managed to get there. I saw the pictures and enjoyed reliving my 2005 memories. However, when I started writing I ended up writing an entry on my Guam thread. That doesn't change the basic intention of the post since my experiences at last year's Getaway were part of what I was remembering.

Anyway, it looks like the Getaway was once again a success. I am glad to see so many of my friends, old and new, enjoying themselves so much. I hope I can get back to that side of the world again some October.

This morning before getting in my car, I grabbed some CDs from the rack. I didn't really look at what I was grabbing. I needed some different songs in the car.

One of them was Bob Zentz' 'Hove To And Drifting'. As I drove down Marine Corps Drive through Piti, Asan, Anigua, Hagatna, Tamuning, and Tumon, I listened to his music and relived a night in Norfolk with Bob and a few of his friends, sitting in a bar trading songs and stories. The music awoke emotions and brought tears into my eyes, tears arising partly from the themes in some of the songs and partly from the memories of that night and so many others when I sat with friends and music and listened and sang from the heart.

Thanks to all my friends for those memories. And for those of you with whom I have not yet shared such times, I look forward to the opportunity.

If any of you know Bob please tell him of this and thank him for me.

HahahahaHAAAA .... Bill Day the Magnificent and Dave Diamond the Beneficent (sp.?) have triumphed over Murphy for another few days. Before the Getaway Dave had arranged to give Bill an old CPU so we could set up a network and Bill and I could stop competing for use of the 'puter.

While Crane Driver, Sussex Carole and I were napping (about 4 hours actually ...), Bill (after a short rest) was setting up Dave's computer and getting onto the Internet. O wise and wonderful husband. I wasn't sure how I would survive being cut off from the Getaway Memories thread.

Well.

The brain is going to take another day to recover and I have to sort out the memories a bit but it was a grand Getaway. We will tell you about it but it takes a while to start thinking again....
