Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Tinker Date: 17 Nov 06 - 06:04 PM Lonesome EJ let me know I actually figured out his five roomates in 102. Although it seems lacking that he himself does not have a verse in the song.... He of the Cardinal blanket waving as a flag and the bottle of Knob HIll under his pillow. There has to be a verse in there somewhere. The Ballad o' 102 In the Central Lodge where I was housed There was a Brave Lad dwellin' and he would rise Deep in the night and put the heat on "Grillin'" BARRY FINN another Lad that dwelled therein a Celtic boy and darin' and he were known throughout the Camp for the Cardinal hat he was a-wearin' BIG MICK a third dear boy a troubador with his Martin was a-willin and he were forced to wear a horse so the Bourbon he was swillin' AMOS another hailed from Canaday beneath his bunk was a-crawlin' we saw him hide and there abide when for his fair wife he was a-bawlin' CET and lastly he who bunked under me from this Lad songs came a-pourin' a kindly friend and gentleman though he shook the rack wi' snorin' JOE OFFER Through joy and care we dwell-ed there and passed the partin' beaker for the hours were gold but truth be told that the Room smelled like a Sneaker |
Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Tinker Date: 17 Nov 06 - 06:14 PM And I have to say my Getaway time is now officially over as I dropped Micca off at the train this afternoon on his was back to Dulles and then across the pond. Bubba was extremely torn. He had adopted Micca as his slavish ear scratcher and was highly tempted to follow him back to London. Amtrack seem reluctant to let him tag along so he condesended to stay here with me. We had a grand time poking into every odd little shop in town (there are many here) and finally getting buzzed up to a rock shop on a second floor rear where we happliy explored until we burnt both our fingers and our wallets. Micca will now confirm that Montclair actually does have a true Brit shop with real every day items for the homesick expat. Oh and Barry, as I was clearing up the church after padgaent practice I reached down and found a blackvelvet spagetti strapped scrap on the kneeler at the altar rail --- really those fantasies were not actually suppose to play out in my church !!!!! I giggled for the rest of the night. Tinker |

Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Dan Schatz Date: 17 Nov 06 - 09:46 PM It really was a wonderful Getaway - if I have a regret it is that I spent so much time making and listening to music that I didn't have enough time for socializing. But it's hard to call that a regret. The camp, as others have said, is a wonderful site, and I think having heat improves the quality of the music. It at least improved the quality of mine, as I reveled in playing my instruments with fingers that weren't frozen. The music was really excellent. I hesitate to list my favorites because I know I'll leave folks out, but here's a few. Joe Newberry's banjo workshop was a particular highlight, along with listening to Jill Rogoff, John Roberts, Julia Friend, Lisa Null, Colleen Cleveland, George Stephens and Mary LaMarca and others. The Saturday night concert was quite good, with a lovely new song from Mick Lane (sentimental mode) and the aforementioned cowboy hysterics featuring Mick Lane (high horse mode). Some people I wish I'd heard more (or at all), but you do have to make choices. It was also a treat to meet so many new folks, including Erin Kelly and Mairi Quodomine, Joe Newberry, Jill Rogoff and others. And thank you to all who congratulated us, asked about the coming baby (due in April) and especially to Jacqui Morse, who presented us with our very first baby blanket! All in all, one of the best Getaways ever. Dan Schatz |
Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Dan Schatz Date: 17 Nov 06 - 09:52 PM Linda, the "Deeper Down" song about well digging is called "Song of Artesian Water." It's a Banjo Patterson song with a tune written by Cathie O'Sullivan (and subsequently folk processed almost to the point of being food processed). I'm hoping to put it out on CD within the next year, if all goes well. The other song is called "Applesauce" and it's by Jan Harmon. Nick Apollonio and Kristin Tescher recorded it on their More Maine Coast Music album. What those two songs have in common (other than lots of syllables) is that they are enormously fun to sing. Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Amos Date: 18 Nov 06 - 12:16 AM Tink: Proceed with due caution. The man is a complete reprobate, a miscreant, an ineluctable force for delinquency, past repair, destroyed, hopeless, impossible, incorrigible, irrecoverable, irredeemable, unrecoverable, and a cureless, demeritorious, depraved, disgraceful, erring, piacular, reprehensible, unholy, incurable unregenerate to boot, past all expiation. Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Nov 06 - 02:41 AM Hey, Micca took me into Southwark Cathedral and introduced me to a priest he knew there, and everything.... Micca may be a pagan, but he's not a pagan exclusivist. He's friends with everybody. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Getaway Memories 2006 From: GUEST,Jill Rogoff Date: 23 Nov 06 - 09:00 AM Just want to say 'hi' to everyone I met at the 2006 Getaway. It was a great experience, and I loved every minute of it. Pity I didn't know about the late-night jams, or I'd have happily joined in. Special thanks to Charlie, Dean and Rita for facilitating my participation (don't try to say that quickly when you've just eaten a box of crackers)... I really appreciated your warm welcome, and was glad I didn't goof up too badly leading my first-ever sessions. I particularly loved: the Copper family session -- haven't sung those songs for years; Lisa Null's beautiful, pure singing; the Shape Note singing (wow!); Joe Newberry's exquisite banjo playing; Dan Schatz's amazing technique on autoharp (I didn't know it could sound like that!); Sylvia Herold's singing of the new version of The Two Sisters; Micca's wonderful parodies... and meeting so many friendly folks who are as immersed in music and words as I have been all my life. Made me feel normal! :-) Actually, it just made me feel at home. I hope I'll be able to return next year -- am working on it. Have a gentle winter, everyone. Jill |
