Subject: 'Leaving All to Follow Jesus' From: jazzhistoria Date: 14 Nov 06 - 02:07 PM Rev. D.C. Rice made some remarkable recordings in 1928-29, where he also used jazz musicians for accompaniment. One of the tunes is LEAVING ALL TO FOLLOW JESUS. Charles Gabriel composed the music to Ida M. Budd´s lyrics (or was it the other way round?), but Rev Rice used another tune - or is it a "simplified" version like his "The ANGELS ROLLED THE STONE AWAY" and "WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY CRUCIFIED MY LORD"?? Subject: RE: 'Leaving All to Follow Jesus' From: jazzhistoria Date: 14 Nov 06 - 11:45 PM Hi Joe, I just wondered if the tune used by Rev. Rice is a "simplified" (VERY simplified!) version of Ch Gabriel´s tune, or if it is another tune. They sound very different! According to Cyber Hymnal, the Gabriel tune is 9/8 but the Rice version is 4/4. The lyrics are the same. Ingemar |
