Subject: BS: Famous short sayings from comics... From: Little Hawk Date: 17 Nov 06 - 01:51 AM The most famous of all may be Bugs Bunny's "Ehh...What's up, Doc?" or it may be Tweety Bird's "I t'ought I taw a puddy tat...I DID...I DID taw a puddy tat!" There are plenty of them. So who was it who said this one on frequent occasions: "DAAAAWK!" And after that is answered, volunteer some others for this thread. |

But I will submit that ANYTHING said by Calvin to Hobbes is a classic. Also... From either Lucy or Linus..."I love mankind; its people I can't stand." From the Wizard of Id...(from a soldier in a long line) "Are we advancing or retreating?" His buddy responds, "Where is Sir Rodney?" "Out in front." "Then we are retreating." I would also suggest that in addition to "Pogo", "Shoe" is one of the best drawn and politically adroit comics ever produced. Freightdawg |

Had to turn off the TV. |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous short sayings from comics... From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Nov 06 - 12:16 AM Yes, Calvin may have said that. I do recall some incident of the sort. However, there was another comic strip character who used the expression long before Calvin & Hobbes came along...and used it frequently. We seem to be getting a crossover between comic strips/cartoons and live standup comics happening here. Well, I guess that's okay. |

Subject: RE: BS: Famous short sayings from comics... From: Don Firth Date: 18 Nov 06 - 03:24 PM Beware of slight thread drift. Rapaire, regarding item 2 on your list, "Who or what was Mickey Dugan?" —anyone recall who Vickie Dougan was? Back to the subject, I can't recall offhand where Dagwood Bumstead worked, but his boss was a Mr. Dithers. Neighbor was Herb Woodley. The postman developed a severe flinch when he neared the Bumstead residence because Dagwood, who was always late for work, would burst through the front door like a missile out of a silo and they'd collide violently, scattering mail like confetti. Prince Valiant hung out at Camelot a lot when he wasn't off on some sort of mission or quest. He originally came from Thule (his father was King Aguare [sp?]). The actual location of Thule wasn't specified, but one can presume that it was somewhere on the northwest coast of Norway. I remember seeing some of the first Prince Valiant strips in the late 1930s, belly-flopped on the living room floor with the Sunday funnies. A few years ago, there was an exhibit of great comic strip art at the Frye Museum in Seattle, and I had a chance to see some of Hal Foster's original strips—the original drawings. That man was an Artist! Here's one for you: Would you give this guy a lift? Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Famous short sayings from comics... From: Rapparee Date: 18 Nov 06 - 05:58 PM I'll do the answers. I'm flying to Indiana (well, Midway in Chicago) for Thanksgiving and some other stuff and I'm leaving tomorrow, so I won't have time to do it later. 1. Who was Asterix's Druid? Getafix, in the US. Panoramix is also correct. 2. Who or what was Mickey Dugan? The real name of "The Yellow Kid" of Hogan's Alley fame. 3. What is the name of Rob Wilco's father? Francis. He did "two turns in the war and fought fires for twenty years." 4. What was the name of Calvin's mother? Calvin's parents are never named, except for "Mom" and "Dad." 5. Where does Dagwood Bumstead work? J. C. Dithers and Company. 6. What was Blondie Bumstead's maiden name? Boopadoop. I'm not making that up, either. Blondie Boopadoop. 7. What was the name of the diva in "Tintin"? Madame Castafiore. 8. What was Pappy Yokum's first name? Lucifer. Lucifer Yokum. 9. Where did Prince Valiant live? He was from Thule and hung around Camelot a lot. 10. What was Howland's last name? Owl. 11. Has Dilbert's tie ever lain flat? Yes. Once. 12. Calvin had a girlfriend named Susie. What was her last name? Derkins. 13. What is the name of Jason's iguana? Quincy. 14. What kind of cat is Attila? Persian. 15. What kind of car did the Perfesser drive? A 1959 De Soto. How'd ya do? |

If I remember correctly, Vickie Dougan was an aspiring "starlet" back in the late 50s. As far as I've been able to tell, she never really went much of anywhere, and the only national publicity she ever got was when Lou Gottlieb wrote a song about her (I think it was Lou Gottlieb who wrote it, but I'm not sure) and the Limeliters recorded it. It's been many decades since I've heard the record, but if I'm remembering it rightly, according to Gottlieb's intro to the song, Vickie showed up at a Hollywood premier or other gala occasion wearing a dress that was cut so low in the back that "she had discovered an entirely new cleavage!" As I recall, the title of the song was "Vickie, Turn Your Back on Me." Don Firth |
