The Orpheus Supertones (Walt Koken, Clare Milliner, Kellie Allen and Pete Peterson) are one of the "headliners" at Gainsborough February 16-17 2007 and are looking for gigs, like Spencer the Rover, in "Great Britain and most parts of Wales." After Gainsborough we are touring jointly with Debby McClatchy as "Gathering II." We play traditional American music with fiddles, banjos and guitars learned from people like Charlie Poole, the Skillet Lickers, the Carter Family and fiddlers caught by the Library of Congress.

Gigs so far are not coming in-- we are told third hand that anti-American sentiment in Britain is hurting American acts such as ours. Since we didn't vote for the guy (or for Republican candidates in either the House or Senate) we feel a little frustrated. Is this true, and has anybody else experienced this?

It would be the loss of anyone who misses you. Suggest you market this through the same channels that resulted in a successful tour for Cindy Mangsen and Steve Gillette-- I dunno what they did, but they were well-received, and recently. Maybe you can find out?

Best of luck,

~Susan

Looking forward to seeing you at the REd Bull Folk Club Stockport!!
For those who don't know you and won't book a band they've never seen, just look at the website...
I can tell we're in for a great night at the Red Bull, looking forward to meeting you!
Cheers

Anti-American feeling against acts such as yours ? That is Bull!

Ask Carl Jones and Beverly Smith who were here recently, ask Riley Baugus and Ira Bernstein who are here now, Ask Dave Bing and Dwight Diller who were here recently. Ask Debby McClatchey who is always here and Tom Paley who lives here.

Have you contacted The Cellar Upstairs folk club in London or the Walthamstow Folk Club in North East London? Or the Dartford Folk Club in Kent?

There is a folk magazine called Folk London on line which gives venues and days of operation and contact names and numbers for many clubs in the South East.

Look it up and do it soon. And good luck with the trip.

Hoot

I got to jam with these guys last June in Mount Airy - they're great, and I'm really looking forward to doing it again at Gainsborough.
How are you Pete?

Orpheus Supertones feature as themselves at

Feb 9th to 11th Old Time Music & Dance Festival, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire

Feb 19th, Red Bull Folk Club, Stockport, Lancashire

and one other gig that I don't have the details off

Then they appear with Debby McClatchy as The Gathering (mark 2)
Currently their dates are

23rd Feb The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington, Devon
24th Feb Blisland Village Hall, Cornwall
25th Feb The Crabshell, Kingsbridge, Devon
3rd Mar The Platform, Morecambe, Lancashire
9th Mar The Subscription Rooms, Stroud, Gloucestershire
10th Mar Sutton Village Hall, Bedfordshire

A rare chance to see some of the best old time musicians going. If you think there is a venue near you that might be able to assist (serious offers only) get in touch with Emerging Music and ignore the fact that the tour dates are not up-to-date yet.

Having seen them perform in Washington DC recently, I can highly recommend them. Any band Walt Koken's ever been in has been notable for its sheer drive and these folks are no exception, whether it's two fiddles or two banjos doing the driving. Good vocals in a variety of combinations and fine song selection. Both CDs are great, but by all and any means, they are a band to be heard live!

Walt was one of the mainstays of the Highwoods String Band. The word 'seminal' seems appropriate. Seems like a good percentage of old time fans got their first music fix from them.

Pete Peterson is one of the few remaining banjo players who uses a two finger technique for Old Time banjo, and Walt Koken is one of the world's best clawhammer banjo players when he's not playing fiddle, with a totally unmistakeable style. Clare Milliner is currently working on an extensive book of American fiddle tunes which will be an essential part of my library when it emerges.
Details of their appearance at the Gainsborough Old Time Festival can be found at the Foaotmad website.

Well, to be honest, only preliminary details are on the FOAOTMAD site (under events) but there's a committee meeting this weekend and no doubt it'll get an update as soon as possible after that.

Well, I'll give this one another spin because in a day or two I'll be setting up a thread for the aforementioned Gainsborough Festival. All I need to organise is getting the poster & booking details organised with our webmaster....

Gloux, you could always email Walt and pester them to get something going.

In the meantime, there's now a thread for the Gainsborough Festival.

They're on their way to North Devon today and me and the missus will be following as soon as I get out of work. Had a great session with them last night. They were on BBC Radio Exeter yesterday morning - maybe it's available on 'Listen Again' but I don't know.
