Subject: Lyr Add: ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE (Joe Cocker) From: Bee Date: 19 Nov 06 - 12:34 PM I've searched everywhere I can think for chords or tab for this song, and found a good dozen 'Great Divide' songs which are NOT this one. Joe's not exactly a folkie, but I do see he's mentioned warmly in a few old discussions. Can anybody help me, please? ACROSS THE GREAT DIVIDE - Joe Cocker Nights are long And the wind is howling down Into the hollows Somewhere deep inside I can hear you calling out Across the great divide Right or wrong there's a feeling in my heart I try to follow But lately i just hide And my dream of someday crawling out To cross this great divide Isolation Heart like a drum And the beating is wearing me down Standing at the station But the train never comes Still I'm hanging on Like some old ghost town Miles to go but I see that one way out Stars in the distance Skies are open wide Waiting for my soul to rise Above this great divide Desperation Is a dangerous blade In a reckless and trembling hand Sweet salvation Just a thin line away I should cut and run But I'll make my stand Nights are long But I'll close my eyes again Until tomorrow Slip the bonds and ride Touch the face I long to see Above this great divide We'll be all We long to be Beyound this great divide |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Across the Great Divide, J. Cocker From: Peace Date: 19 Nov 06 - 01:05 PM The title is "The Great Divide". I will look, but I have not much hope. A sound sample on Amazon indicates that he's using 'jazz' chords, and figuring out descendoing minor sevenths and sixths without a guitar in my hands is beyond my abilities. BUT, I will look. |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Across the Great Divide, J. Cocker From: Bee Date: 19 Nov 06 - 01:25 PM Thank you, Peace, although that sounds like I'll have a lot of trouble mastering it at all. However, I've a friend who may be able to help me, as he's been introducing me to less standard chording possibilities when he rarely visits. Good buddy, drinks a bit, but even reeling can play guitar, mandolin or fiddle beautifully. I always learn something from him, even if I have to penetrate the beer haze. I would really like to play the song. I'm finding my more sober musician friends are deadly with any country/western song, but even a minor chord or seventh stops 'em dead. They are ACDEG players, played 'em for 25 years and mostly not interested in anything outlandish. I had trouble learning to finger Dm and one of 'em told me "You'll never need that chord anyway." So I'll be soloing 'The Wild Goose' at kitchen parties, I guess. ;-) |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Across the Great Divide, J. Cocker From: Bee Date: 19 Nov 06 - 02:04 PM Yes, I have a couple good ones bookmarked. I've presently no sound on my old computer (98SE), but getting that fixed. So yes, if I have the name of the chord, I can probably find out how to finger it. |
