Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle and Family MD concert From: Nancy King Date: 19 Nov 06 - 06:50 PM Well, shoot. I'd go to this in a minute if it wasn't the same evening as Nowell Sing We Clear, for which I've already bought my ticket. Maybe there will be another chance to see these two before long. I hope so! For those of you within reach who do not have conflicts on that date, DON'T MISS THIS! Elizabeth LaPrelle is the finest young traditional singer to come along in ages, and she and her mom Sandy put on a great show. Don't know Jim Lloyd, but I'm willing to bet this will be a fine evening. Wish I could be there! Nancy |

Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle and Family MD concert From: Ferrara Date: 20 Nov 06 - 08:52 PM People who have been to the FSGW Getaway in recent years know Elizabeth and Sandy LaPrelle's great singing. Jim Lloyd is a friend of theirs, another fine musician from Rural Retreat, VA. He and Elizabeth have performed together for years and in some ways Jim has been a mentor to her. Jim is a very good instrumentalist who is also a darned good lead singer. His choice of songs is eclectic, lively and a lot of fun. He and his friend Jimmy Costa were teachers at Augusta Heritage Old Time Week in 2005 and their concerts got a great reception. I have Jim's CD, "One Night Only," and it gets a lot of play, partly because I keep trying to learn his songs :-). We have a craft show that weekend but I am still hoping I can get to this concert. Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle and Family MD concert -Dec 2 From: Fortunato Date: 03 Dec 06 - 11:30 AM Elizabeth LaPrelle's concert 12/2 at the Delaplane Art Center in Frederick, MD., was mighty fine. Elizabeth's considerable vocal talent is augmented by an unerring taste in songs just right for her style. Outstanding among her songs for me were Little Darling Pal of Mine, a Carter family tune, and a emotionally-charged rendering of Jean Ritchie's West Virginia Mine Disaster that left me feeling that Elizabeth had SUNG that song, well and truly. This song appears on her CD, Rain and Snow, where she is also accompanied by her mother Sandy and Jim Lloyd, as well as Amy Davis and Jon Newlin, two fine old time players who are Elizabeth's aunt and uncle. Satisfying in all respects, one aspect of Elizabeth's performance particularly remains with me this morning, and that is the pleasure to see an artist emergence with so much promise in a style I can embrace. Sandy LaPrelle's harmonies were well-crafted and her voice, naturally complementary, interwove beautifully with Elizabeth's. Sandy's happiness in singing with her daughter was a joy to behold. One standout was Sandy's harmony on My Dearest Dear, a song of Sheila Kay Adams. Jim Lloyd, resident bon vivant of Rural Retreat, Virginia, lent sparkling banjo accompaniment on a variety of vintage banjos, and a fine old 1933 Gibson guitar rounded out the instrumentation for Carter Family songs. He contributed some choice old time tunes, several from his CD,One Night Only including The Man with the Horn and an old time arrangement of Fats Waller's Feet's Too Big. The recordings of Elizabeth and Jim Lloyd are available on Old97Records. On the website http://www.old97wrecords.com/ The honest, down-home sincerity of these folks from Rural Retreat will restore you faith, go see them if you can and buy their CDs either way. Subject: RE: Elizabeth LaPrelle and Family MD concert -Dec 2 From: GUEST,Dani Date: 03 Dec 06 - 08:19 PM What a wonderful Mudcat world it is! Though I would love to have been there, I was in Durham NC singing Christmas carols at a sing and concert by Julee Glaub and Mark Weems (who perform as Little Windows) and was standing right next to Amy Davis and Jon Newlin and their cutie-pie little girl, just as Elizabeth and Sandy must have been singing! Jon did fearless musical graffiti on "Rudolph". Glad to hear the reviews, and hope to make the show in Richmond. Chance, I thought of you last night, too. Greg Bell of the Eno Festival played accordion ; ) and I was thinking we should put up a louder lobby for next year: you and Susette would be a great addition to the music lineup there! Dani |
