Put up an ad.

Invite other players who you know that play Irish Music.

Ask people you know, so you'll have at least some musicians there. I think word-of-mouth is often the best way to advertise a session. An ad or a poster AT the pub would also be good.

All depends. Probably both. But the main thing is getting a few people together who are able and rerady to play, so the personal invites are probably more important, especially for the first night.

Skarpi - Put up a notice , tell as many musicians as you can , and make sure Rosa is there as often as possible ! Then just start playing and hope enough people are there to join in ! Pay my return fare and a bed and I will be there just to play (MUSICALLY) with Rosa and you !!

Use a Starter's Pistol!

It'll be drowned in the noise though... what with bodhrans and all...

You can also advertise here - I notice that Reykjavik has a session, the only one in Iceland in the database. So if that session is still going you might get some players for your new session. Lots of people play in more than one session.

Once you get a few players together it's useful to agree a few 'ground rules'. Sessions split up very easily if some people think that tunes are too slow, others think that they're played too fast. Some people only want well-known easy tunes, at some sessions songs are acceptable, not at others... But if you are concerned that everyone gets what they want the session is more likely to be a long-term sussess.

Did you know that Reykjavik is one of our twin towns here in Hull? Perhaps Reykjavik doesn't like to own up to it!

To STOP the session, just say "Time Gentlemen Please!" (in England)
or "Beer's off" (in Aus)...
