Anyway I once heard Paddy Tunney complaining that Planxty had quoted him as the source for a song, but that he had never provided it to them, so it must have been learned indirectly. He was not overly impressed with the Planxty version.

I'm fairly sure that he was talking about "The Green Fields of Canada" rather than "As I roved out", whatever the source, I've always loved Andy Irvine's version of As I roved out from the Planxty recording.

In 1952, we visited Sarah Makem (Tommy's mother) in Keady, County Armagh and she made a wonderful ceilidh for us that evening. Here are her words to the song (that was later used as a theme song for and BBC series on folk music):

As I roved out on a May morning,
On a May morning right early
I met me love upon the way,
Oh Lord, but she was early

And she sang,
Lilt-a-doodle, lilt-a-doodle,
Lilt-a-doodle-day
And she hay-de-lon-de day,
And she hay-de-lon-de day
And she-lon-de.

Her boots was black and her stockings white,
And her buckles shone like silver
She had a dark and a rollin eye,
And her earrings tipped her shoulder.

And she sang, (etc.)

Sarah had no more verses- or I never heard her sing any more. Tommy often sings this song in his performances. Beautiful...   JR

This will be no help at all, but in the days when I was rapidly losing patience with a very dirgy traditional folk club, I used to start a song like this:-
As I walked out on a bright may morning,
To view old Nashville both high and low
Who should I spy but Miss Dolly Parton
As she walked out on Musicians' Row.

I took off my hat and I did salute her
I did salute her most courteously.
When she turnd around , the tears fell from her
And this is the song he sang to me.

Then I'd sing "Jolene".
It amused me anyway!

It is included on the double cassette of the Tunney family 'Where Linnets Sing' as 'As I Roved Out' sung beautifully by daughter Maura. Paddy's note also refers to it as 'The Deluded Lover'.

Not a "claim", but a statement of fact, quoted from Planxty's sleeve notes; though whether they learned it directly from Paddy or from print or a record is not specified. Paddy himself called it 'The False Bride'.

"GEST" links to a completely unrelated song that he happens to have on his own website. It shares a notional title (in that form), but that is all. There are a great many songs that begin 'As I roved out', just as there are a great many stories that begin 'Once upon a time'.

You get the version above if you search the lyrics database on mudcat (DT) on "Tunney". It claims Planxty learned the version from Paddy Tunney. I'm sure our experts will weigh in on that.

I am a searching for the original lyrics of 'As I Roved Out', as sung by the late Paddy Tunney. I have the truncated Planxty version, which I believe to be an inferior version. I heard it sung by Paddy Tunney once, many years ago. Unfortunately I didn't obtain the words back then. Any ideas, anyone?
