Subject: any song suggestions? From: Lox Date: 21 Nov 06 - 04:14 PM I want to form a band. The idea is that I will sing and play a nylon strung acoustic. I will be supported by a big old mexican stand up double bass with fat nylon strings, and a drummer who in my mind will have a couple of bins and a kitchen sink. The lead instrumentalist is a piano accordion player. We have all been doing folk and folk rock for years, and I fancy a change while they seem pretty open minded and trusting of my "vision". I'm thinking something a bit raw with a jazzy tip. Elements of Tom Waits spring to mind. Flood me with Ideas and inspire me. |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: Lox Date: 21 Nov 06 - 04:18 PM you know, stripped down and atmospheric. |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 21 Nov 06 - 05:35 PM Stripped down? I wouldn't advise that, really. Ghost Riders in the Sky. |

Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: Nick Date: 21 Nov 06 - 06:34 PM Ry Cooder comes to mind given the line up in some of his many guises Tom Waits is just wonderful always - I sing 4 or 5 of his songs and just think he's great Could play Crocodile Rock too but not sure you'd want to Roxanne by the Police perhaps Little Wing - Hendrix Anything with a Tex Mex flavour Maurice Chevalier or something French? Where do you go to my lovely. Perhaps not Can the piano accordion play jazz or with a jazz feel? Sky's your oyster World's your limit |

Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 21 Nov 06 - 08:36 PM WOW!!!
You have seen one of my groups perform. The percussionist needs to add bottles and one in the group can easily master a clarinet/sax with a duck call for a reed.
Some truly amazing things are occuring in music at this moment.
The DIY (Do It Yourself) movement may finally drive commercial distributors out of their monopoly.

Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: GUEST,Bruce Baillie Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:37 AM ...why are you even thinking of starting a band if you haven't got any ideas of your own? |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: Scrump Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:57 AM I just pick songs I like and introduce them to the band. So far no-one's complained. Have confidence in your own judgement! |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: fat B****rd Date: 22 Nov 06 - 06:26 AM Damn this sloth !! I wish I was out there with you. Try some of the old timey bands like Gus Cannon. And not forgetting good luck from Charlie. (That's me,not a musical reference. PS Tom Waits new cd(s) !!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: GUEST,Jim Date: 22 Nov 06 - 10:56 AM Get some old Cheap Suit Serenaders albums for ideas. You might want to find a musical saw player. |

Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: GUEST,lox Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:52 PM Well I do a bit of Clarinet and sax too so I'm tempted to see how the clarinet and accordion work together. Thanks for suggestions. Roxanne and Ghost riders are interesting, though the dificult one for me is coming up with more up beat tracks. There is a fiddler in the wings, but the key factor for now is to affect short term cash flow problems and see what happens from there. No long term plans for now. There are a couple of original songs kicking around too that may be appropriate but no hurry for now. |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: M.Ted Date: 22 Nov 06 - 05:57 PM To cop a concept from another thread, why not pick someone's birthday(like yours) and play the top twenty hits from that day--if you don't like that idea, play tango music. |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: Lox Date: 22 Nov 06 - 06:01 PM Oh my god! Being in a tango band would be divine. LOL ... I'm sorely tempted ... ... gngngngngn ... ... That's put the cat among the pigeons ... I think we may end up seeing popular formats played in a tango style interspersed with trad tunes ... ... strip it down ... strip it down ... ... breathe ... breathe ... I'll consider it. |
Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: GUEST,Timmytour Date: 22 Nov 06 - 08:08 PM How about an underrated Tom Jones hit? The Young New Mexican Puppeteer |

Subject: RE: any song suggestions? From: Lox Date: 22 Nov 06 - 08:16 PM "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" Don't know it - I'll search for it and have a listen. "If I Only Had a Brain" Actually works out as a good idea all round. |
