Search for FOX, hit 16, there's a midi there. Right click on the URL and 'save target as'. It's always worth searching the DT before starting a thread!:-)

There's also an alternative tune which I've heard cousins sing. Does anyone have that one? To me it's a more interesting one than the usual. Unfortunately I haven't heard it in a while and have forgotton it.

There are two Middle English versions of the song in R. H. Robbins' 'Secular Lyrics of the 14th and 15th Centuries', #48 and #49, then the song disappeared for a little over 3 1/2 centuries. The earliest copy now known is one from an Edinburgh songbook of 1832, reprinted in Logan's 'The Pedlar's Pack of Ballads and Songs'. A slightly earlier version from a Scots MS of the early 19th century, is to published in the future, and the editors would be grateful if anyone could supply them an early tune for the song.

Thank God there are scholars who write this stuff down and know how to look it up when our brains begin to, well, um, er, drop things.
